RADIO FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM:

Wire-free is the solution to a host of applications.

More specifically, the panels can control up to 255 deviceseach and are available in 4-96 zone variants. Each panel can benetworked, using either radio Lan panels or hard wiredLan connections.

Our radio systems can run a host of device types includingcombined optical, smoke sounders and, for DDA compliance,an integral beacon.

Detection DevicesSmoke and heat detectors are made up of two parts; theradio communication and addressable base, with anaddressable detector plugged in, they can be mounted on toall types of ceilings.

Sounder Devices Our system has a host of sounding devices, including stand-alone wall-mounted sounders, wall-mounted sounder beacons, combined sensor-sounders, combined voice sensor-sounders, andrecently the combined sensor-sounder with integrated beacon.

InterfacingVarious interfaces are available, allowing integration withwired fire alarm systems, closing fire doors, gas valves andplant shut downs.

THE SLOANE STANLEY ESTATE – LONDON:

As a responsible landlord, SloaneStanley invested significant timeand effort into understandingand complying with the variousregulation requirements forhouses in multiple occupation(HMOs). They researched all of

the solutions on the market andcame to WFP for a radio fire

alarm solution.

In an exclusive area surrounding the Kings Road and FulhamRoad, radio fire alarms have proven to be a highly desirableproduct. This is for a number of reasons, including avoidanceof wiring, ease and speed of installation, and lack of disruptionto the premises or residents.

In this specific case, each premises has had a twelve zoneradio fire detection and alarm panel installed complete with72 hour standby supplied. The system is primarily for thelandlords’ areas, however in some individual flats, a combinedsmoke sounder has been installed, providing early warning foroccupants of a fire within the common stairwell.

Programming: Some premises have a simple “one out, all out”operation. However, we have also installed systems with visualdelays, allowing the resident to silence the system if activatedby accident, prior to full evacuation of the premises, using adelay timer.

Each system has a bespoke documentation box housing themanuals, spares, drawings and most importantly themaintenance log book.

THE ST PETER’S PROJECT – IPSWICH:

WFP were employed to work withthe building services consultants,to design, install and put to worka radio fire detection and airsampling solution, to meet therisk requirements of the site.

The 14th Century building was aformer church for mariners in the

Suffolk port of Ipswich.

In 2006 the Ipswich Hospital Band were awarded almost£800,000.00 in a lottery grant, and with the further support of

the local council and church restoration bodies, refurbished andconverted the church into a music and arts centre. The designprocess had to minimise any structural damage, therefore anengineered solution was used, combining a radio fire detection andalarm, in the easy to access areas. Due to the height of the roof inthe main body of the church, an air sampling system was installedwithin the apex of the old roof. A lower area to the rear of thebuilding was covered using a reflective self aligning beam detector.

This application saw both wire-free and air sampling productsused to great success. The advantage of installing the pipework at high level precludes the need to access the pipe workfor maintenance purposes.

NEWPORT FREE GRAMMAR SCHOOL - ESSEX:

Newport Free School is asprawling assortmentof buildings which wasusing an ageing firealarm system, thatalso served as a classchange method. The

site straddles a busyroad which presented

its own unique problems.

Using a wired system, the extensive ground workswhich would have been required would have beenextremely expensive, not to mention disruptive. These problems were solved and ground worksavoided by the installation of a state-of-the-artnetworked radio system.

WFP was chosen to supply and commission the extensivefire alarm system using five networked fire alarm panelsto cover all of the eight individual blocks which makeup the school. The system was interfaced in order tobe integrated within the complete system, giving theideal solution. Couple the reliability of the newlyinstalled radio system, with 24 hour site monitoring, the school can now look forward tomany years of secure fire protection.

WRG WASTE CENTRE - LUTON:

Stratos Cuts Waste Site's False Alarm Rate to Zero.

The Waste Recycling Group (WRG) handles more than 15million tonnes of household, industrial and commercial wasteevery year from its sites located throughout the UK. As part ofWRG's investment in recycling infrastructure in Luton, theKingsway Materials Recycling Facility was developed toaccommodate 25,000 tonnes of recyclable material every year.

A particular problem for the site was a poorly designed pointdetector based fire detection system which was regularlygenerating some 3-5 false alarms daily.

WRG approached electrical contractors who worked closelywith WFP to design and commission a system which providedthe early warning of fire, so important to a facility which

predominantly handles paper waste but one which was notprone to false alarm.

WFP designed a bespoke combination of aspirating technologyand an addressable system comprising three Stratos HSSD(r)detectors and a single Stratos-Micra (r) 25 detector connectedvia an addressable loop with combined sounder beacons andmanual call points controlled from a single control panel.

Smoke tests were conducted at the Kingsway facility with Stratosmanufacturer AirSense, demonstrating the suitability of thetechnology to the site's particular requirements. Our approach tofire detection is to have a system that people are not aware ofunless there is a problem. By combining the appropriate technologywith attention to detail at the design and commissioningstages, that is exactly what we have achieved for WRG."

PRINCES HOUSE OFFICE - LONDON:

The historic building that is PrincesHouse, situated in London'sJermyn Street, already had anexisting fire alarm system, which had reached the end ofits working life.

The system had become obsoleteand could no longer be modified

to meet the changes to the buildingas they arose.

MBE Consultants were asked to devise a solution involvingradio devices. MBE chose WFP to design and install a radiosystem throughout the premises; one that answered thespecific needs of the client. This system incorporated an airsampling system to cover the atrium and lift shafts, with linksto the adjacent BAFTA building and the building directlybeneath, housing a night club.

This installation was carried out in the fully occupied building, across all seven floors. In all, over 300 devices were installed, without any major disruption to the building and its users.
