An excursion with snowshoes (or snow rackets) is an unique experience, which takes one back to the distant past, when they represented the only feasible way to travel in the winter for mountain people, when snow falls were abundant.

All the itineraries can be walked in both directions, uphill or downhill. Before starting off on a walk it is important to get information about the weather conditions (on www.meterotrentino.it), the practicality of the path and whether snowshoes should be used (at the Information and tourist offices, see pg. 51).

If the weather conditions are particularly bad and/or persistent, access to the routes will be guaranteed only after the official endorsement of safe conditions.

Each person must select the appropriate trails according to their physical abilities, level of expertise and to the equipment available.

All the routes have a QR CODE and they can be downloaded and viewed on a Smartphone.

All the trails are signposted with directional arrows and signs with the Snowshoes logo, which should not be confused with the local signs pertaining to the various ASUC (Separate Administrations for Civic Uses) (see pictures below)

Page 4: Wintry Walks

4

Even though snow rackets are safe and reliable, it is necessary to be alert about the ever-present danger of avalanches in the mountains. It is essential to choose a route according to one’s abilities, the type of slope, the exposure and the conditions of the snow and of the weather. It is best to be informed about the current conditions

by consulting an avalanche bulletin and the weather forecast. With snow rackets it is advisable –at least for beginners- to choose routes through wooded areas and on gentle slopes to keep the risk of snow slides to a minimum. Avalanche risk evaluation requires great experience; only trust experienced guides.

ADVICE...

How the trails were classified

The proposed routes have been classified with the help of the Alpine guides of the Italian School of Alpinism and Val di Sole Alpine skiing. They range from 1 star to 5 stars taking into consideration their physical challenge, length and also the environmental and landscape quality. All the trails are well maintained and the itineraries expertly prepared. The five star trails are especially exclusive having been prepared and guaranteed by the Italian School of Alpinism and Val di Sole Alpine skiing and they can be mapped by G.P.S.

Unfortunately, we cannot take any responsibility for any accidents that could occur on any of the trails.

Page 5: Wintry Walks

We always recommend to use rescue devices such as ARTVA, shovel and probe and to keep to the signposted path without taking alternative, not signed routes. The walk duration as quoted in the booklet are the average, approximate times.

Some information on how to practice snow sport while respecting wild life. Winter is a very difficult season for animals and the disturbance made by man can undermine their survival. Food is scarce in wintertime and of low energy content, the short days offer scarce possibilities to feed themselves and their movement is impaired by snow which can weaken their strength. The temperature (-10 degrees Centigrade is the average temperature at 2000 m a.s.l.) forces animals to save energy in the most efficient way. The strategies developed vary according to the different species but the

most important one common to all is to choose places where it is possible to find suitable food with the least use of energy, i.e. where there are no disturbances, no dangers and no predators.

Deer, fawn, ibex and chamois have developed:• A dark, insulating wintery coat;• Fatty stores which can reach up to a fifth

of the weight for chamois and ibex;• Reduction in the expenditure of energy,

the capacity to ruminate and therefore lowered food requirements.

Grouse, backgame/black grouse, hazel hen and ptarmigan instead are characterised by: • A plumage which is very insulating with a

double layer and with plumes to the tarsal bones;

• An ability to dig cavities in the powdery snow where they spend more than 20 hours daily at temperatures of around 0 degrees C.;

• They cannot accumulate fatty stores and in the winter the capacity of their crop is barely enough to provide enough energy to arrive at the next feeding.6

ANIMALS OFF PISTE … those who respect protect!

Page 7: Wintry Walks

7

What happens when an animal is disturbed in the winter?• Escaping uses up energy• The stress burns energy stored and

prevents them feeding regularly;• The lost energy cannot be replaced

because they cannot digest more food than their usual basic requirements.

• As a consequence they face difficulties reproducing themselves, enfeeblement, death by exhaustion or by predators.

With some simple rules it is possible to practice winter sport while respecting the fauna:• Only walk along the signalled paths,

which the animals learn to recognise;• Do not enter the winter refuge areas

for the animals and respect the ban;• Do not follow animal tracks in the

snow;• Never follow wild animals, especially

when there is high snow coverage;• Keep your dog on the lead;• Be the first to be a good example.

N.B.:

this trail can be shortened by not going as far as Palude’ Alta Alpine barn but going down instead along Valle Lago Corvo up to Palude’ Bassa Alpine barn (duration 4 hours).

Loc. Cavallar (1,480 m) - Malga Artisè (Tergiolasa 1,890 m) - Malga Cespedè (Samocleva 1,892 m) - Malga Paludè Alta (Caldesa Alta 2,054 m) - Malga Paludè Bassa (Caldesa Bassa 1,835 m) - loc. Cavallar (1,480 m)

From the car park of Cavallar just above the namesake hamlet the trail climbs on the same path used in the summer, which

moderately goes up through hairpin bends through the splendid larch wood until it reaches the big meadows of the Alpine

barns. Along the way many tracks of animals are visible imprinted in the snow and, if you are lucky, silent and careful, it is possible to get a glimpse of them in the spots under the fir-trees free of snow. The survival of animals during winter is determined by saving energy and therefore it is important not to scare them unnecessarily. Near Malga Artise’ the path climbs up along the pastures below until the Alpine barn is reached (1,890 m) (2h 30min). From up here enjoy a wide view on the Val di Rabbi and on the surrounding mountains. From here walk along a path that leads to Malga

Cespede’ (1,892 m) (3h) and following the mountainside creases that descend from the Cima del Sas Fora’ after the wide valley of Lago Corvo (lake) reach the Malga Palude’ Alta (2,054 m) (4h). Here enjoy a wide view on the Val di Rabbi and the far Dolomites. In this spot it is common to spot the golden eagle taking advantage of the ascending currents created along these sunny mountain sides. Go downhill along the track of the old mule track until the Malga Palude’ Bassa (1,835m) (5h) and from here along the woods and open spaces to the Cavallar car park (6h).

Alpine farmsteads and cross over a little wooden bridge and enter the stark slopes of the Valorz valley until the Baito Forestale (forestry Alpine hut) (1,364 m) placed in the vicinity of the awe inspiring, iced-over waterfalls (2h). The return trip goes along

the same path for a short way; then close to a lovely mountain hut move on to the opposite side of the mountain going down amongst the sparse larch wood until the basin of the Valorz valley (3h 30 min).

The circular route starts off at the small village of Ortise’ at 1,477 m. Leave the car in the car park by the small church and take

the road that goes up just above the village towards Alpe Pozze. After the village of Ortise’ on the right side of the first turning,

besides a characteristic Alpine farmhouse, the trail climbs up. The track enters the wood, steeply going up besides the brook, and then turns left on the forest path surrounded by a thick fir wood. A bit higher the wood opens up allowing a sweeping, wide view on Val di Sole and on the snow-clad peaks of Presanella. In the area beside the path there are several, beautiful and recently renovated Alpine farmhouses close to the refurbished Malga Stabli (mountain barn) (1,911 m).Malga Stabli is open in wintertime every day - from 6th December to 30th April – with food available (it is advisable to book); the distance from Ortise’ is 2.8 km with a altitude gap of 340 m and a shuttle service is available by booking on +39.347.3514177 (mobile). The itinerary carries on towards Malga Bronzolo: after the Val del Molinac enter the fir and larch wood and along the winding and panoramic way shortly arrive at a wide area next to the Alpine barn. A refreshing stop at Malga Bronzolo (2,084 m - 3h) is well worth it to enjoy the view. Following the

signs for Malga Alta di Mezzana, which is visible in the distance on the opposite side of Val Pure, the route carries on eastward and crosses over a steep slope where it is important to be careful because when there have been recent snowfalls there is a high risk of snow shifting down the slope. After overtaking the wide hollow of the valley climb up at the opposite side towards the near Malga del Monte Alta (2,106 m) (4h). The trail follows the marked 121 SAT path sharply descending in the wood and following the traces of the old mule track until the Malga del Monte Bassa (1,699 m). In this tract it is necessary to be careful about the likely presence of slabs of ice that can form especially below the large fir trees, next to some water springs and small brooks. From Malga del Monte Bassa (1,699 m) (5h 30min) carry on following the 121 SAT path to reach the crossroad with the forest path coming up from the village of Menas. A long and flat track leads to the village of Menas and then quickly back to Ortise’ (7h).Because of the possible presence of ice on some tracks along the way it is recommended to use of crampons on the snowshoes.

The circular route starts in Peio Paese, at 1,585 m, exactly at the bus car park and passes through the most eastern part of the characteristic hamlet where, next to a hairpin bend, there is a panoramic, moderately

steep white road, which leads to Malga Mare. On its first section, the road is often busy with farm vehicles and being exposed to sun it can lack snow until the Croce dei Bagni (Cross). Entering into the conifer wood

towards Malga Tale’, the path is undulating and reaches a distinctive, prehistoric site, called Sas de le Crosette, Crosette’s stone (a stone hollowed and covered in engravings). Shortly after reach Malga Tale’ which has recently been restored by the Stelvio National Park and which displays an interesting themed exhibition dedicated to grouse (birds of Arctic origin) and their complex strategies of adjustment to the environment. The Alpine barn is situated in an area of pasture characterised by the presence of mysterious wild birds. The trail goes up gradually near some traditional Alpine farmhouses of Lagostel and from here reach shortly the Vallenaia Torrent where the water supply is easily visible. It flows into underground pipes that on sloping ground descend towards the hydroelectric plant. Following the obvious path, also signalled by the 127 SAT trail, return towards Peio Paese walking through a nice larch wood lively with many wild animals: hare, foxes, deer, fawns, Alpine hare leave many prints on the snow. Now abandon the flat, small road and climb

up following some winding turnings up to the pastures of the panoramic Malga Salina, 2,080 m. From here the view spreads over the mountain ranges of Brenta, Adamello, Presanella and the dominating Monte Vioz. The route then descends through the wide pasture and enters into the thick conifer wood (fir trees) and shortly leads to the Scoiattolo Alpine Hut at 2,000 m which is a meeting point for skiers.Going around the departure area of the new cable car and following the summer 127 SAT path walk beside an ample ridge until joining the ‘Via dei Monti’ (the mule track for woodland use) which descends towards Peio Paese. Walk downhill observing beneath the Piana di Covel, an area of great environmental and landscaping worth, the characteristic lake is completely iced-over and partly hidden but the nearby waterfalls are truly beautiful.Walk down the comfortable track up to Peio Paese, paying attention when crossing over the skiing piste, without forgetting to stop at the magical and historical hill of S. Rocco.

Loc. Cavallar (1,480 m) – Piazzola (1,315 m) – Somrabbi (1,346 m)

From the hamlet of Piazzola follow the sign for the locality of ‘Cavallar’. At the end of the paved road on the hairpin bend with the sign of the parking area - which during the winter is not accessible to vehicles – turn left where the trail starts. Carry on the very wide forestry road that runs beside characteristic small Alpine farmsteads of Val di Rabbi up to the locality of Somrabbi, within the Stelvio National Park. This path run along the natural border between the wood and the village, it is exposed to the sun all year round and offers a fascinating view on the whole valley and the surrounding peaks. It is very interesting

to take notice of the alternating of meadow and wood, as a continuous tug of war between man at work, mowing the grass and keeping the snow-clad meadows clear, and nature which quickly claims for itself any piece of land which is left uncultivated. The itinerary is very easy and pleasant, suitable for families with children. For good part of the wintry season it is possible to hike over it without snow rackets. The forestry road merges into the main road at Somrabbi. The return trip is then possible following the road to Piazzola or following the same way in reverse.

43

Start off from the area Plaze of Cogolo, on the right side of the river Noce, venturing into the thick wood, towards the direction of the mysterious S. Lucia church, an isolated medieval building on a knoll which towers over the little hamlet of Comasine. The church has beside it a strong steeple, with a stone roof and Romanesque mullioned windows.

Documents date the church back to 1,374 AD and it was widened and fitted with a portico in the 16th century. The wooden altars have been moved to San Matteo church of Comasine, which existed already around the middle of the 15th century in the middle of the village which was once inhabited exclusively by miners from Lombardy. It is not a coincidence that S. Lucia church (an unique building in the Val di Sole landscape) is dedicated to the Saint originally from Syracuse who is the patron Saint of the blind and miners. For many centuries the presence of iron ores (of magnetite) have been an important resource for the village and their exploitation dates back probably to Roman times or before. It reached its apex around the 15th and 16th centuries and declined afterward to end completely around the middle of the 19th century when the work at the blast furnace situated in the Forno dei Noval locality was abandoned. However, the mining exploitation of the depths of the mountains of Comasine ended completely only in 1967. From S. Lucia church return to the starting point by the same route in reverse. Or make a de-tour, taking off your snowshoes and pay a visit to the small hamlet of Comasine: the ‘Giacomo Matteotti’ Cultural and Community Association is definitely well worth a visit. It is dedicated to the memory of the well-known socialist MP whose family was originally from here. On 10th June 1924 he was killed by fascist hit men in Rome.

The long snow-covered trail goes through the thick fir and larch wood leading to Malga Campo at 1979 m of altitude in only 4 km. To the Alpine barn structure there has been recently added a small renovated building with a stove which is accessible in wintertime. Next to the stable the trail is sign posted on stone; the path climbs up

gradually without bends up to a wide basin with pastureland. From here some hairpin bends lead to 2300 m of altitude where the effort is rewarded by a spectacular view which stretches over all the mountain ranges of Cevedale, Adamello and Brenta. The return trip is through Malga Campo by the same trail or via some shortcuts with powdery snow.
