At The Salvation Army Kroc Centerpeople are inspired to discover their God given talents and develop their potential through artistic, educational, physical and spiritual experiences in a Christ-centered atmosphere.

It’s About the MissionThe Salvation ArmyThe Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love for God. Its mission is to

preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Nearly 33 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a wide array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. About 83 cents of every dollar raised is used to support those services in nearly 9,000 communities nationwide.

For more information, go to www.salvationarmyusa.org.

Joan Kroc’s VisionIn January of 2004, Joan Kroc, wife of the McDon-ald’s restaurant chain founder Ray Kroc, left a gift of $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army to build and oper-ate community centers around the country. Joan’s vision was that people in underserved areas would be given access to a high quality facility with a variety of programs so they might discover their natural gifts and talents. Kroc Centers are now located in 26 cities, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico!

The Omaha Kroc Center, which opened in the fall of 2009, is one of five located in The Salvation Army’s Central Region. It was made possible through both the generosity of Ray and Joan Kroc as well as the Omaha community. Our Kroc Center currently serves approximately 3,000 members. The facility, programs and events are also open to the general public. In addition, groups and businesses rent the Kroc Center for a wide variety of professional meetings and personal events. To all the Members and Friends of the Kroc Center:

Do you have goals for your life? What motivated you to join the Kroc Center, was it better health, to alleviate joint pain, to lose weight or gain strength, or to develop a hobby?

I am spontaneous and often work from a To Do list rather than plan out my day or week. While reading a new book on the reasons for our decision making I came across this quote:

In general, two motivations drive us to complete the tasks we perform each day. In some cases, we try to move toward something we want. We’ll call this motivation “Gain.” In other cases, we try to avoid negative consequences. We’ll call this motivation “Prevent Pain.”

One motivation or the other pushes us toward nearly every decision and activity we pursue. For example, when we exercise and take vitamins, we may be trying to improve our health. This would be a Gain motivation. On the other hand, we may simply want to prevent illness. This would be a Prevent Pain motivation. Completing a required task at work helps us Prevent Pain, whereas doing something above and beyond the call of duty on our job is likely motivated by Gain. (From “Decide” by Steve McClatchy)

My question to you is why did you join the Kroc Center? How can we help you reach your goals? Were you motivated by “Gain” looking for improved health? Or were you motivated by “Preventing Pain” and looking for relief from stress and stiffness?

We hope you will find the Kroc Center and our qualified staff positive resources for your quest to reach health and prosperity in life. Maybe this year will be the year you find a new hobby or class that motivates you and keeps you active, such as Aquatics Fitness Classes, Silver Sneakers, or setting goals with a personal trainer. Whatever your goals or motivation we would like to help you fulfill your future plans.

“ I signed up for the Women and Weights class to learn the proper technique for lifting weights. Kim (our instructor) provided a wealth of information. At the completion of the course, I not only learned how to properly lift weights, but more. We learned about nutrition and muscles and how to properly warm up and cool down. Kim made sure that when we completed the course that we would be able to complete a workout on our own. She gave us the confidence to go into the weight room and “kick butt”.” – Janet, Kroc Center Member

Majors Todd & Cathy Thielke

“ We keep coming back to the Kroc Center because of the variety of programs offered. Our daughter Matilda participates in the HEROES fitness program, our daughter Charlotte enjoys her dance class and the open arts studio. When our schedule allows, they both take in Taekwondo. My husband and I decided to use the time when our daughters are in activities for our own fitness training; we use the fitness deck and I am enjoying Yoga as well as POUND classes. We like that the Kroc is clean, the equipment is good, and most of all the staff is friendly and helpful.” – Ulrike, Kroc Center Member

It’s not the Aquatics Center or the game room or even the advanced fitness equipment (though those things are awfully nice). It’s the mission! The mission of The Salvation Army is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

One of the ways we accomplish this mission is by creating programs and services that develop assets in youth and families. Developmental assets are enriching. They help individuals reach their potential and contribute to their families, schools, and communities. Developmental assets lead to more caring, responsible, healthy, and productive habits and allow individuals to have a more positive self-view.*

The Kroc Center is special because it is intentionally creating pathways for each person to be inspired, receive instruction, and to get involved in a variety of ways. The Kroc Center is committed to providing access to resources that can transform your life!

*Based on research from the Search Institute

What are the 40 Developmental Assets?Assets are 40 values, experiences, and qualities that help kids succeed. When consistently present in a young person’s life these assets greatly increase the probability of that young person to thrive and avoid risky behavior. For a list of all 40 assets visit: www.search-institute.org/ research/developmental-assets.

FLOAT4LIFE LESSONS AGES 1 - 3 Float4Life is a water safety pro-gram that teaches young children, ages 1-3, how to roll on their backs (like an Otter!) so they can breathe, float and reach the side of the pool until help arrives. Those precious seconds can save a life! Ses-sions include 8 lessons, each 15 minutes long. These “mini” lessons maximize the short attention span of toddlers while gradually increas-ing the child’s comfort level in the water through personalized one-to-one instruction. The program is a partnership between the Omaha Kroc Center and the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation.

“Too Brief Here On Earth, But His Impact Will Last Forever…”

Josh the Otter was created in honor of Joshua Collingsworth, a 21/2 year old little boy who was lost to a drowning accident in June of 2008 in Lincoln, NE. His parents believed they had all the pool safety barriers in place but did not spend enough time talking to him about never going near the pool unless mom and dad were with him. During a family gathering he was briefly out of sight, went to fill his brother’s squirt gun, lost his balance and fell in the pool. Josh the Otter’s goal is to educate all children that water is fun but only with an adult. The Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation is dedicated to water safety and life saving programs like Float4Life.

Toddlers learn how to roll on their backs, like an Otter!

DONATE!Joan Kroc knew that healthy, happy, confident people are better parents, earn higher grades in school, enjoy their jobs and are more productive, and actively pursue a better future for their community. That is why she trusted The Salvation Army with her dream that Kroc Centers would bring communities together.

Omaha’s Kroc Center does this every day. We start by hon-oring what each person brings with them and then match them to programs and activities that help them discover and develop those unique talents. Our goal is to help everyone achieve successes that build confidence and self-esteem. We sometimes encounter a family who we know would really benefit from the Kroc Center, but they simply can’t afford to join. That is when the generosity of donors kicks in.

The Kroc Center’s Scholarship Fund permits us to reduce the cost of membership to a level that anybody can afford. When you donate to support scholarships, you’re honoring Mrs. Kroc’s original founding gift to the Salvation Army. She wanted Kroc Centers to provide benefit to the commu-nity and to be sustained by the community.

More importantly, your gift helps families right here in Omaha develop important skills and confidence, and enjoy some quality time together. Your donation goes to work immediately to keep memberships and program costs low, assuring everybody has access. Just like Joan Kroc wanted.

TO DONATE, please contact Madeline Moyer at 402-905-3517 or [email protected].

Thank you for your support.
