Letter from the Director

The weather may be getting colder but your local Parks and Recreation department has put together a wide range of pro-grams for the entire family to keep you active this winter/spring. First, as part of our department’s mission we are making a push to encourage healthy life styles which includes a new partnership with Shop Rite. We are proud to announce that we are offering a free Weight Management program for adults to encourage better nutritional education and ways to make balanced choices. These are all new additions that are nicely complimented by our fitness classes including Zumba, Yoga, Senior Exercise and the new Hoop Dance class to name a few.

I hope you take the time to look through this brochure and explore the varied offerings we have available including returning favorites like spring T-ball, after school mad science, pony pals, dance/gymnastics and brand new offerings like Arch-ery, Skyhawks sports camps, and February/April vacation camps to keep your kids busy during school breaks.

In addition to the wide range of program offerings, your Parks and Recreation department is working on a several im-provement projects at Mills Pond Park which include the tennis courts, skate park and pool house. We look forward to having these ready for use in the coming months.

I encourage you to swing down to the Parks and Recrea-tion Office located at the Canton Community Center to meet with myself and our new Recreation Supervisor, Courtney Hewett, coming to us from the Town of Wethersfield Parks and Recreation. Both Courtney and I are open to new ideas and ways to improve the quality of services being offered in town. If you have any suggestions or new program ideas feel free to reach out!

In conclusion, I challenge your family to get involved this winter season with our new nutrition/fitness initiatives as well as take part in our many programs; from enrichment, sports, swimming and special workshops; there is bound to be some-thing for the whole family to enjoy! Remember to feel great…Recreate!

Sincerely, Joshua T. Medeiros, MS, CPRP Director of Parks and Recreation Town of Canton
