NORTHERN LIGHTS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPSCameras Any type of camera that offers some degree of setting control and a minimum 15 second exposure setting can be used to photograph the northern lights. Many compact cameras have these functions built in, but quality will be much better with a DSLR or film camera. PRO TIP: Get to know your camera settings before embarking on your trip, and be sure to bring the manual so you can troubleshoot on the fly.

Lenses A wide angle lens less than 40 mm is invaluable for taking photos of the aurora borealis. The wider your lens, the more sky you will capture but the trade off is more distortion at the image edges. For cameras with interchangeable lenses, a fast lens of F2.8 or less is recommended for best image quality and will help combat low light conditions.

Memory Cards Ensure you have enough memory card storage with you, bring extra memory cards, or have a secondary storage device such as a laptop or external hard drive handy. It’s not uncommon to use 32 GB of storage – or more – in a single evening. EXPERT TIP: If a memory card is damaged or images inadvertently deleted, it can be difficult to retrieve lost images. Unless shooting continuous HD or 4K video, it’s best to travel with multiple low capacity cards rather than a single high capacity card (eg. four 16 GB cards versus one 64 GB card).

Batteries Batteries do not perform optimally in cold climates and specialized batteries may not be readily available for purchase on your trip. Keep a set of spare batteries charged and on you at all times, preferably inside a pants or jacket pocket near your body where it’s warm. There are no outlets to charge batteries on the Tundra Buggy®. Make sure to also pack your battery charger and travel plug adapter if required, so you can recharge your batteries at your overnight accommodations.

Camera SupportLong exposure images require your camera to be supported by a tripod or affixed to a stable platform. A sandbag suspended from the tripod can help stabilize it and reduce vibrations and movement from the wind. Even pressing the shutter button can create unwanted camera shake and blurry images. This is easily remedied using a shutter cable or remote, or by setting the camera self-timer.

Light Sensitivity Digital capture below ISO 800 will show the least image noise, but light and colour imperceptible to the human eye can be captured by the camera sensor around ISO 1200 and greater depending on ambient light from the moon and other light sources. PRO TIP: Have a light source such as a headlamp, flashlight or torch to light a scene or simply view your camera controls in the dark. Be mindful of others around you, as ambient light can ruin their exposure.
