Archives with tea and biscuits providedby the WI.Halloween again was a magical

experience and we were delighted to seeso many residents and their children turnup in fancy dress to meet our very ownWitches and Skeleton. Thanks must go toAmanda and Nicky (our witches) togetherwith our mystery skeleton. In addition, thanks to all those who helped make ithappen and especially Alex from the Caféin the Orchard for the soup. The annual Apple Day put on by

Shenley Park marked the end to afantastic summer of events in the WalledGarden that gave us all a chance toappreciate the very attractivesurroundings and the opportunity toappreciate all the hard work anddedication that goes into keepingShenley Park an appealing and attractivepark that attracts not only us locals butmany people from outside the area aswell. A vote of thanks must go to Glynand his team for achieving this on such atight budget with no public funding. The Village sign is back! Owing to the

restrictions of the frame and design of thelogo it is a little smaller that we would likeand over the next few months we will belooking at something larger to create agreater impact.Just before Christmas we organised a

trip for the Seniors of Shenley to themusical Beautiful. We took over 100people by coach to the West End andenjoyed a musical delight. We then took atour through Central London to see theChristmas lights and displays. There arefurther activities planned this year and wehave just confirmed Woburn Abbey andGardens as the destination for our springcultural trip and Brighton for the summer

We had a brilliant Christmas in Shenley…Santa paid the Village a Sunday visiton his sleigh in the morning and in theafternoon he and his elves were inresidence at the Cage where more than100 children came to see him. The eventwas made so much more special withcarols sung once again this year by theSt Martins Church Choir. We would like tothank both the Choir and The WaverleyDriving Group for making these events sospecial. Donations to both thesevoluntary groups were approved in theJanuary meeting as a token of thanks. Thanks must also go to Steve Bury forriding the sleigh and Maureen & Peter forthe organisation. In the week following Christmas we

held our fourth annual Chanukah Candlelighting at the Pond. The service was ledby Rabbi Garber with musicalaccompaniment provided by JacquelineCurzon it was really moving to see somany people turn out to celebrate andenjoy the lights and the festivities thatfollowed. Our resident celebrity Ben Caplan of

“Call the Midwife” fame once again kindlyagreed to switch on our Christmas lightsearlier this month. Again, a wonderfulvillage turnout. We heard of Ben’s futureplans and more about “Call the Midwife”.We then enjoyed a Christmas receptionin the Village Hall.Remembrance Sunday saw our annual

ceremony to remember those who gavetheir lives for us in the Wars. It was amoving service lead by our local clergy ofall faiths and was lovely this year to seethe children participate as well. Theceremony was followed by a display, courtesy of the Parish Council and LizTrott in the Village Hall, of The Shenley

trip. We have also secured a booking fornext year’s cultural trip to HighclereCastle (Downton Abbey)I am delighted to announce that we

came top in the Tesco’s voting and thatwe have been granted the maximum£12,000 to go towards our outdoor GymEquipment project. We are now finalisingthe quotes and designs and hope to haveit installed for the Spring. A huge thankyou to all of you who collected the tokensand put them in the appropriate votingbox. We have also chosen to support the

Shenley Park Toddler Play Area projectand as the scheme has now enlarged weare committing a further funding of£1,000 towards this to ensure that ithappens before the summer.Speeding continues to be a regular

issue raised by Shenley residents and assuch our PCSO has been out conductingspeed checks. Towards the end of lastyear he positioned himself along PortersPark Drive for a 30 minute period andcounted 52 vehicles. The four that werecaught above the speed limit have all hadletters. Fines will be given to repeatoffenders. Road safety is an issue that isconstantly being talked about and I ampleased to report that we have made anapplication for funding for two sets ofSpeed Indicator Devices, (smiley faceand sad face electronic signs). One to besited on the bend outside The Church ofThe Good Shepherd and the other alongPorters Park Drive.Owing to the retirement of Councillor

Grossman we had a vacancy for a newCouncillor. I am pleased to say that wehad a lot of interest in the position andreceived six applications. Five candidatesapplied for the position and as a result Iam delighted to welcome on boardCouncillor Helen Hussain. The future of the Village is always very

close to our hearts and as such we areproducing a Village Neighbourhood Planwhich will shape future development inShenley. If you want input into this andhave your say then please come along tothe launch on the evening of Wednesday5th April. Watch out for leaflets andposters nearer the time. You will have noticed that the

boardwalk alongside the pond has beencordoned off. It has been deemedunsafe at the moment and duringFebruary we will be having repairs carriedout together with a general facelift. From an analysis of the questionnaires

completed for the new Village Plan manypeople were asking for better transportlinks for commuters saying that the busservice didn't work for them. As a result ofthis we are looking to introduce a ShenleyCommuter Shuttle Bus to and fromElstree & Borehamwood Station in themornings and evenings. This would be apaid service by the passengers and tokeep the cost reasonable we need fortypeople to sign up to make it viable. Please get in touch with me if you areinterested in learning more. If you arecurrently taking the train from Radlett, remember that Elstree & Borehamwoodis one zone further in and on the oystercard so the saving to you could be quiteconsiderable. There seem to be an increasing

number of thefts etc. so please keep youreyes open and let’s look out for oneanother. Finally I would like to tell about our

`Shenley Village Question Time’ withOliver Dowden MP on Saturday 20th Mayin the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Your chanceto ask Oliver and us lots of questions.Put the date in your diary.

GAMES AFTERNOONSShirley Bury and Nicky Beaton

In December’s Shenley Parish News Shirley Bury wrote an article about starting a regularget-together on one Thursday afternoon each month to chat over a cup of tea or coffee andperhaps join in a game of cards, scrabble or any other game you would like to bring along. It might even be that you want to do a crossword with someone? Everyone is invited tojoin in, villagers of all ages who fancy making new friends in a friendly environment! Quitea few people have expressed an interest in taking part so it will definitely happen. We havedecided to use the Methodist Church meeting room…..look out for information regardingthe first get together which we hope will be in early April (earlier if we can arrange it).We will need assistance with transport and refreshments so if anyone could help with thatit would be a big plus! We will be looking for voluntary contributions to cover room rentaland refreshments which will not be a lot - hopefully under £1.If you have not already contacted us to express your interest in coming along please phoneor email Amanda Leboff.Tel: 01923 855865. [email protected] look forward to welcoming you to what should be very friendly afternoons. Shirley andI will be pleased to learn some new games!

We will shortly be notified that Hertsmere Borough Council has approved the ShenleyNeighbourhood Plan Area. This will mean that we can officially start working in earnest onour plan. In October last year we sent out Neighbourhood Plan Questionnaires (we wantedto use the time while waiting to hear from Hertsmere!). A big thank you to everyone whotook the time to complete and return their Questionnaires. Cllr. Helen Hussain and I spentmany, many hours analysing the Questionnaires and every single comment has beenlogged, nearly 13,000 words. Helen is an Accountant, she has done the numbercrunching and this is her summary:The results of the Questionnaire are in. Of those who responded we have a really striking

key message: 98% wish to retain the green nature of the Village. Housing was also a keypart of the questionnaire. There is an almost equal split on whether we agree or disagreeon the need for more affordable starter homes for first time buyers and this will be lookedinto as part of the Neighbourhood Plan process. We do know that 90% of respondents thinkwe do not need any more large homes! A number of other areas were also highlighted thatneed further analysis. Parking issues for example. Did you know that 75% of respondents feel that teenagers need more activities? Your

Parish Council agrees and has already started looking into this. Keep an eye out forpermanent goal posts and a basket ball hoop in Rookery field. Villagers are also concernedabout public transport so as you will have seen on the Parish Council Facebook page andin the Chairman’s message in this SVM issue our Chairman, William Susman is trying tostart a weekday early morning and evening mini bus service for commuters. Watch thisspace! Please go to [email protected] - the Neighbourhood Plan section to see the fulllist of Questionnaire results. As Helen says, it is clear that you want the green character of the Village to be preserved.

You want Green Belt protected and for us to remain a village and not to gradually mergewith Borehamwood and Radlett! It is worth pointing out that Neighbourhood Plans are notallowed to be negative, which means that our Plan cannot say that we want nodevelopment and it cannot contradict anything that is in Hertsmere’s Strategic Local Plan(Hertsmere is in the process of drawing up a new Plan at the moment). However the Plancan be much more specific about what sort of development is required, including the designcriteria for homes and their surroundings. The Plan can also specify the type of housingthat is needed for a diverse mix of the population. Once ‘made’ the Shenley NeighbourhoodPlan will be a statutory supplement that will have to be considered in ruling on planningapplications and in the making of proposals for change to Shenley services andinfrastructure. We need to develop our Plan as carefully and as speedily as we can so that we have a

real say in Shenley’s future. This is particularly important in the light of highly publicisedGovernment aims for housing development over the next 10 years. We are told thatHertsmere has to plan for an additional 9000 units! To help us formulate our plan (it is a complicated process) we have engaged a highly

experienced Neighbourhood Plan consultant, Angela Koch from Imagine Places who is alsohelping Aldenham Parish Council with the Radlett Plan. She will make sure that we doeverything we are supposed to do. We have just heard that we have been successful in ourapplication for a Locality grant, which will help us with our initial costs.

The official Shenley Neighbourhood Plan Launch will be on

WEDNESDAY 5th April in SHENLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL HALL 7pm to 9pmWe must emphasise that Neighbourhood Plans are designed by residents, not by the

authorities or by Parish Councils. Shenley Parish Council is sponsoring the plan and willhelp drive it forward. We need your input to formulate our Plan and will need people to jointhe following Working Groups:

• Green Belt & Heritage• Housing & Development• Road, Transport & Parking• Amenities, Infrastructure & Community Resources

Once the April 5th presentation has taken place (it will not be a long one!) we willencourage people to join the different Working Groups so that some initial feedback can beobtained and a plan of action agreed for each group, including the setting of the firstmeetings! We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 5th April in the Shenley Primary School Hall

We all have a role to play in keeping Hertfordshire the safe county that it is today. I have sought to provide opportunities for a wide range of citizens to do their bit through schemes such as the Special Constabulary, Police Cadets, Drivesafe, Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) and Neighbourhood Watch. These have been very successful but I now want to see volunteering expanded.

3

If you are considering making some new yeasome volunteer work? This can be as simple as giving one afternoon a month to visit the elderly, driving sick people to hospital or perhaps taking on one of the roles I mentioned above. There are opportunities to suit all ages.

3

We now have 59 Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) who assist in helping me to fulfil my statutory responsibilities for monitoring the well-being of detainees. They ensure that issues relating to detainees or the custody suites are addressed, by undertaking regular unscheduled checks, day and night across the two custody suites in Hertfordshire.

Shenley AllotmentsAt this time of year there is very little going on in the allotment world although I am stilleating the potatoes and onions I grew last year. Hopefully all the ground has been turnedand the frost is breaking up the soil nicely. Of course keen vegetable gardeners havegot broad beans, over wintering onions andgreens planted. On the brighter dry days it’s time for diggingin manure and possibly covering clearedground. Unfortunately we had several reports ofvegetables being stolen from plots last year, which is particularly annoying for the victimsas they have put in a lot of hard work duringthe year. At the allotment committee it wasdecided that we would be increasing securityand the work has already started. If you are interested in taking on a plotplease contact Amanda Leboff the Parish Clerk at: [email protected] tel : 01923.855865

Sunday June 18thFather’s Day

Over recent years Shenley Fete has gone from strength to strength and seen a steady increasein visitors. Helped very much by a keen group of volunteers. The Fete has two main goals. The first is to give everyone a great day out and the second is to

donate to local charities and good causes. Our charitable donations have been increasing everyyear as the fete has grown. After Fete expenses all our income is used for donations. This year we have Stunt Monkey as our main attraction. A motorcycle stunt team. You can

check them out on Youtube, on their own website (stuntmonkey.co.uk) and Facebook:stuntmonkeyltd. A great display. We get three shows during the afternoon. We think they will bea big hit!We also have a lot of fun and interesting entertainment outside the Arena. In addition to our

many stalls and rides we have Toms Talking Reptiles. An educational and fun interactiveexperience where you can take a closer look at some of the larger reptiles and some quite smallnone reptile furry creatures. Check it out at tomstalkingreptiles.co.uk. All the old favourites will be there. As ever the central arena will be surrounded by stalls and

rides. The Dog Show, always a success, will make a reappearance. We will have our Tombola, run by Liz Trott and the Raffle and Auction run by Stella Larkin. Liz will be very happy to receiveany gifts of good quality (Christmas presents?) for the Tombola. Please drop them in to Nr.8Hillcrest road. The WI will be geared up as well as will Alex Black for the Shenley Tea Roomswith the Beer Tent and Justin Posner who runs our excellent catering Marquee. The Climbing Wall, new to us last year will be back as will Electric Go-Karts, Punch and Judy,

Ferrett Racing, Bungee Trampoline, Water Balls and Laser Tag and many more attractions toonumerous to list here. The cost of our attractions has been increasing steadily year by year. Wehave managed to hold the admission charge at 50p for over ten years and we now find expenseshave forced us to increase admission to £1 for adults and 50p for children. Brilliant valueconsidering what we have to offer. Car parking will stay at £1.Don’t forget to put the Fete in your diary. It starts at 12.0pm on Sunday June 18th in the HarrisLane playing fields as usual. This is Father’s day too. Bring the children and join in the fun.

Finally if you would like to have a stall at the Fete please contact Nicky Beaton [email protected] or call 07976 872668

Best wishes. Guy Beaton Chairman. Shenley Fete Committee

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAYSunday November 13th.

On Sunday 13th November at 10.45 a largenumber of Villagers gathered at the WarMemorial near the Cage Pond to take part inthe annual remembrance ceremony tohonour those who gave their lives for us inthe Wars. World War 1 and 2 and in other conflicts since then round the world. It was a movingservice led by local clergy of all faiths and local children participated. Hertsmere BoroughCouncil Mayor Peter Rutledge and his partner Jane West were in attendance. After theceremony many went back to the Village Hall to enjoy refreshments provided by the WI and tolook at a display of Shenley Archive material, photos and books organised by Liz Trott.

Many thanks to all those who took part, to the WI and to Liz.

We started the year with a wonderful dry Wassail! Thanks to all that camealong and to Alex from the Tea Rooms for being our “Green Man” Wassailceremony leader. Thank you toSimon Jacobs who came withhis family to Wassail and alsotook some great pictures whichcan be found on Shenley Park the

facebook page.Shenley Beavers also Wassailed the

Orchard at their meeting on Wednesday 11th Januaryand were treated to a clear night with an almost fullmoon. It was so bright that they could turn off their torches and play “it” in the moonlight afterwards,a great time! Moving into the Spring we hope to see many bulbs flowering around the Park. Over the lastcouple of years many hundreds have been planted. This year the Chapel grass bank has daffodilsplanted by Shenley Beavers & Park staff. Hopefully they will not be picked but left for all to enjoy. If you would like to join the Park volunteers on Thursday mornings working around the Parkplease contact the office : www.shenleypark.co.uk or phone : 01923.852629.Our events will be finalised by Easter so look out for news on our facebook page ShenleyParkor sign up for emails [email protected].

We had a cracking start to 2017 at Shenley W.I. It was lovely to see so many newmembers and visitors. Terry Pavey gave a moving and informative talk on the work ofthe R.S.P.C.A. and was ably assisted by “Betty” the Shih Tzu. The primary focus ofTerry’s talk was on the work of the Friends of Southridge R.S.P.C.A.Southridge Animal Centre opened in 1969. It is an animal rescue centre rather than asanctuary and the primary focus wherever possible is to re-home the animals. Thereare approximately 250 animals in the centre’s care at any one time. It costsapproximately £2,000 a day to run Southridge and none of that money comes fromgovernment funding. It all comes through fundraising which is a large part of theFriends’ work. After the talk and refreshments, we listened to presentations on the proposed W.I.

campaigns for this year and voted on the one we in Shenley wanted to support whichwas 'Support Women's Refuges'.WI meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30PM in the Village Hall.2017 meeting presentations include The Old Bailey, Extreme Knitting, and A Female inFleet Street. Visitors are very welcome. If you would like more information, please call Cathy on01923.858373 or just turn up on the night.

ACTION FOR A CLEANER SHENLEYCllr. Nicky Beaton

I am pleased to say that ACS is still running!I hope to be able to arrange the next two hour session in late February/early March.

It may be that we are able to do a couple of sessions a month depending on who isavailable to come along. I will advertise the sessions on the ‘Shenley Parish Council’and ‘My Shenley’ Facebook pages.I am glad to tell you that Councillor Helen Hussain will also be running a regular

Elstree District Cubs

Elstree District, which is made up of Cubs fromElstree, Borehamwood, Radlett and Shenley, celebrated 100 years of Cub Scouting onSunday 18th December. Events have beentaking place during the last twelve months tocelebrate the formation of the “Wolf Cub”section of Baden Powell’s Scoutingmovement, which started in 1916 and wasoriginally based upon the Jungle Book story ofthe Wolf pack and its leader Akela. This final act of celebration for the Cubs wasa Party which was held at Nr.96Shenley Road,Borehamwood. The party had been in theplanning for the last 12 months and wasattended by over 60 Cubs and Leaders. Afterthe traditional Flag Break and Grand Howl, theCubs were treated to a Magic show byColonel Custard who captured their attentionwith a combination of traditional magic andcomedy. This was followed by a picnic style tea withcupcakes that were decorated with the official“Cubs 100” logo made by Danielle Dorsett, one of the local Cub leaders. After the food, the Cubs took part in an indoor camp firesinging traditional scouting songs, accompanied by all the actions. The Cubs were given a short talk by Ron

Worthy, one of the older members of theDistrict Scouting team on what it was like to bea Wolf Cub in the 1950s. He explained aboutthe uniform worn then, including the “itchy”woollen jumper and shorts. He also talkedabout the badges that he had to earn to obtainhis Leaping Wolf badge, the highest award forWolf Cubs. Ron then answered lots ofquestions from the Cubs about hisexperiences. To finish the party, all Cubs and Leadersreaffirmed their Scout Promise together, led byCounty Cub Leader Wendy Tierney. The group were addressed by the Mayor ofHertsmere Borough Council, Councillor PeterRutledge, who thanked them for allowing himto join their celebration for this milestone intheir history. Councillor Clive Butchins, Mayorof Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, also spoke to the Cubs of his time in Scoutingas a leader and wished the Cubs many yearsof enjoyable Scouting. After the closing ceremony of Flag Down, allthose attending the party were presented witha limited edition commemorative Woggle anda certificate of attendance at this memorableevent. We were also very fortunate to have aparent from 1st Shenley Cubs (Simon Jacobs)

1st Shenley Scouts ReportWhilst the Scout’s motto is famously “Be Prepared”, you could be forgiven as a member ofShenley Cubs and Beavers by being taken by surprise as you’re never quite sure what maylie in store for you.Last term the lucky Beavers had an amazing series of adventures from a fabulous trip tothe De Havilland Aircraft Museum (The Museum is featured in this SVM issue) to pond

dipping and nature rambles in ShenleyPark and Carol singing around the village. The Cubs topped off an amazingcentenary year of celebrations with a high-octane adrenaline filled trip to the XC inHemel Hempstead. Thanks to the amazinggenerosity of the Shenley Fete committeethe cubs enjoyed conquering the incredibleclimbing wall – though I have to confess Ikept my feet safely on the ground. If they weren’t busy swinging from therafters they were cycling to success afterwinning the District Cyclocross to win aplace in the coveted Regional Final. They perfected their map reading and

navigation skills with a night time hike around Shenley finishing at the Fish and Chip Shopfor a well-earned treat!..... But Scouting’s not just about fun andgames – they are also learning to be partof the community and to give somethingback. The Cubs took part in a litter pick ofShenley Park and raised awareness of theproblems posed by selfish dog ownerswho fail to pick up their poop. The Cubsplaced red flags next to the manyoffending piles of poo spread throughoutthe park. The Cubs also ran their own stall at thewonderful Shenley Apple Day to raisefunds for the group, with an Apple Pop Barthat was a rare if very sticky success.

Both Cubs and Beavers were proud participants on Remembrance Day, performingreadings and writing prayers for the Church service and marching to pay their respects atthe Village War Memorial. In between all these activities the Cubs also managed to gain their Disability Awarenessbadge, Artist’s badge and also enjoyed lighting fires and cooking outside to gain theirBackwards Cooking Badge. This term promises to be as action packed as ever as the Cubs will be carrying outexperiments to complete their Scientist Badge, taking part in the District 6-a-side Footballcompetition, learning survival techniques at the Bush Craft Day and reaching for the skieswith a trip to Mega Jump. So whatever happens you’d better “Be Prepared” to have somefun!

Caron Curnow Leader - 1st Shenley Cubs.

I regret to inform you that our currentBeaver Leader is retiring at Easter havingrun the group on her own for the past 2years. If we do not have any volunteers torun the group going forward the group willhave to close. This will be a disappointingsituation for the Beavers, the 1st Shenleygroup, the District and for me personallyas I originally restarted the Beaver groupabout 5 years ago. Beavers offer youngchildren an introduction to Scouting, toadventurous activities, to a chance tomake new friends and to have fun – thoseof you whose children are currentlyBeavers will be aware of the enjoymentthey get from taking part in the group.

What does this mean for youand your child? For those of you whose children arealready Beavers with the group, if they areold enough (nearly 8) they will be able tomove straight to Cubs after Easter. If theyare not old enough to start Cubs, thenthey will go onto the Cub waiting list untilthey are 8 and there is a space availablefor them. For those of you whose childrenare currently on the waiting list, theclosure of the group will mean that you willneed to contact one of the other localBeaver groups within the District to putyour child’s name on their waiting list. The

Shenley Beaver ScoutsHelen Hawthorne District Commissioner

nearest groups are in Radlett orBorehamwood. Most groups have waitinglists as recruiting children is never aproblem in Scouting.

Could I help?Leaders in Scouting are all volunteersand we can only run groups if we haveenough volunteers. Ideally we need atleast 2 people to run the 1st ShenleyBeaver Colony. If we can get volunteersand they could start before Liz Ensorfinishes they would obviously benefit fromher experience. If not then training andsupport would be provided by the Districtand the County team. From my ownexperience, volunteering in Scouting is agreat way to get involved in your localcommunity, to learn new skills, tochallenge yourself and also importantly tohave fun whilst helping to enrich the livesof young people. You could surpriseyourself if you give it a chance so pleaseconsider helping if you can!

Aviation Museum gets top Tourism Award. Its growing corps of volunteers has helped win a major tourism award for the De HavillandAircraft Museum.Comments made by visitors to the museum at Salisbury Hall, London Colney, over the pastyear have led to must-read Travellers Worldwide awarding the aircraft museum its TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence in Hospitality.“We are very pleased to have been given this award as a direct result of our visitors’ viewson Trip Advisor who have endorsed the Museum and the work carried out by our volunteers,”said museum marketing director Mike Nevin. “It means we have been recognised fordelivering consistently great service as defined by the reviews of visitors.”The volunteer-run museum, a registered charity, gained some 30 new volunteers last year, boosting its team to some 150. The Museum instituted a formal training program, at thesame time creating the new Board-level role of Volunteer Development Director. This has been taken on by a volunteer, Don Stoddart. “This is a most challenging time for themuseum as we are planning to open for longer hours and more days each year,” he said.“We will need even more new volunteers to help look after our visitors, with responsibilitiesranging from ground maintenance to guardians of individual aircraft, and several otherprojects, so our needs are very varied. We have an ongoing training program and we neednew volunteers of all ages and abilities.”The museum is the only museum in the country dedicated to a single manufacturer, and hasmore than 20 iconic aircraft designed and built by De Havilland at its Hatfield factory overnearly 70 years.

This all contributes to making the museum the wonderful place it is and with the tremendouseffort our volunteers and the trainers put in each and every day that we are open combines toput the museum on the must-visit list not only for all aircraft enthusiasts but also for families.”Alongside the civil and military, piston and jet engined aircraft on display and underrestoration will be a new hands-on experience that visitors can enjoy. It consists of two flightsimulators, one a 1930s Link Trainer and the other a Comet airliner. Work on getting theminto action is currently under way.The museum, just off Junction 22 of the M25, re-opens for the 2017 season on SundayMarch 5th. Hallowe’en at the CageSunday 30th October

The Shenley Witch (Nicky Beaton) with hergood friends Cat (Amanda Leboff), Skeleton(William Susman) and Dracula (Guy Beaton)took residence in the Hallowe’en Cage towelcome villagers, fellow witches, cats, zombies, skeletons, vampires, ghosts andghouls. Everyone was invited to sample thedelicious eyeballs in green slime and redworms (all edible, at least by us!!).This yearlots of children insisted that their parentssample the eyeballs!! Maybe next year morewill be brave enough to try them, the greenones are particularly tasty! The strawberryflavoured worms were a big hit served by ‘TheHand’. In fact there was only just enough. TheCat will be placing an order with the worm farm for extra supplies for next year.Special thanks to Alex Black, Orchard Tea Rooms, for providing plenty of blood soup (tomatosoup, not ghoul-ash!). Toffee apples were given out and a few Hallowe’en sweets ended up inTrick or Treat buckets. Everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion helped by the spookymusic. The children’s ghoulish costumes and makeup were amazing - the result of a lot of workand their parents didn’t let them down. Our Dracula photographer took some good pics as youwill see, aided by his scribe Ross Brice making sure they knew who everyone was for the FancyDress competition..Fancy dress prizes winners were as follows: First prize was awarded to Barney, Ellie and Poppy

Curnow, their makeup was gruesome, veryrealistic scars and the Runners up were: Sophiefor her terrific witch outfit (our Cage witch wasjealous!), Dracula Ava, we loved the teeth andfinally Elliot with his scary green face and unusualshoes. The winning pumpkin was by ImogenFinney with Benjy Fowler-Lyons the runner up.Jeremy Leboff must be commended for his twopumpkins - a bulldog and Sherlock Holmes, veryartistic but they could not be entered into thecompetition as he is Amanda’s other half! A bigspooky well done to everyone. Many thanks to Amanda Leboff our lovely Parish

Clerk, for organising the event brilliantly as always. She really does work hard. At the same timewe would like to thank Amanda’s boys, Alfie and Barney for being so helpful throughout theevent (lots of brownie points) and Dad Jeremy too who looked after the Pumpkin competition.Thank you to Anthony Spencer who kept everyone in the queue safe and away from the road ,

and we appreciate all Bob and Fay Gough’s help organising theelectrics and helping put the decorations up and taking themdown afterwards. They come from Borehamwood to help at allour events which is very kind. Shirley and Steve Bury walkedpast as we were setting up and got roped into helping us withdecorations, many thanks. We were pushed to get everythingdone on time this year but I think everyone who attended willagree the end result was a success and suitably spooky. Manythanks to all helpers. It was a great Village evening and a lot of fun.

SHENLEY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ONOn Monday 14th November we held the annual Christmas Lights switch on. The event waswell attended by Shenley residents. Ben Caplan, our own local celebrity, Sergeant Nokesfrom BBC’s “Call the Midwife” kindly came along to press the magic button to turn on thelights after a cheerful countdown by everyone present. It was very interesting to hear allabout Ben’s busy year. Unfortunately he didn’t get to film in South Africa with his “Call the

Midwife” colleagues for the Christmas special buthe has been doing plenty of other great work in-cluding a month in the Kinks musical “Summer Af-ternoon”. The original switch on date for theChristmas lights had to be changed from the 16thto the 14th as Ben had to fly out to Budapest onthe 15th to start work on a Christmas “Maigret”with Rowan Atkinson!

The Parish Councillors laid on a delightful free reception of wine, soft drinks and nibbles forall those who came to watch. Ben and his family stayed, enjoyed the nibbles and chatted. Itwas another fun well supported community gathering. Special thanks to Amanda for organis-ing everything brilliantly as always and thanks also to all helpers.

The annual lighting of the Chanukah candles was held on the evening of Wednesday 28thDecember at the Cage Pond seating area. The area glittered owing to the pretty lights in the

We were delighted to haveHertsmere Borough Council Mayor Cllr. PeterRutledge and his partner Cllr. Jane West asspecial guests. Before the lighting and afterwards thosepresent were offered doughnuts, dreidels, light sticks andchocolate coins courtesy of the Parish Council. Special thanks go to Bob and Fay Gough for coming earlyto sort out the electrics and to arrange the Christmas lights. They also helped tidy up after the event. Thanks to GuyBeaton for setting up the sound system and helping to take photos. Thanks also to Cllr.Anthony Spencer who collected the doughnuts earlier in the day and helped hand them out.Amanda Leboff’s organisation was superb as always. Cllr. William Susman was unable toattend but that morning he put up the barriers which protected the flower beds and took thebarriers down the next day! As with any event there is always a lot that goes on behind thescenes! For those who don’t know much about Chanukah, as I didn’t, it is the Jewish eight-day,wintertime “festival of lights” or “Feast of Dedication”. It is celebrated with a nightly Menorahlighting, special prayers and fried foods. The Hebrew word Chanukah means “dedication”and it is so named because it celebrates the re-dedication of the Holy Temple. You will alsohave seen it spelled Hanukkah or variations of that spelling. In the second century 164 BCE,the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks) who tried to force the people ofIsrael to accept Greek culture and beliefs instead of mitzvah observation and belief in G-d.Against all odds, a small band of faithful Jews led by Judah the Maccabee defeated one ofthe mightiest armies on earth at that time and drove the Greeks from the land so reclaimingthe Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the service of G-d.When they sought to light the Temple’s Menorah (the seven-branched candelabrum), theyfound only a single cruse of olive oil had escaped contamination by the Greeks.Miraculously, they lit the Menorah and the one-day supply of oil lasted for eight days, untilnew oil could be prepared.Chanukah is observed for 8 nights and days starting on the 25th day of Kislev according tothe Hebrew calendar, which may occur any time from late November to late December in theGregorian calendar.Thank you to all helpers and everyone who supported the event.
