From the Desk of the Board President...

I hope you all had a wonderful and joyous Holiday Season! I

would also like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best

for 2016.

The Association continues to move forward with our Strategic

Plan. The plan continues to guide us to meet our vision and

mission of full inclusion for everyone.

In late December “Focus” accreditation conducted their site visit

in anticipation of receiving another 4 year accreditation. We

should hear the results by late January. I want to thank everyone who participated

in the process your input and comments are invaluable.

The Ministry of Community and Social Services is embarking on a Multi-Year

plan for Residential Services and supports in 2016/2017 and 2017/2018. Priorities

will be identified and plans developed. This will be extremely helpful to

organizations as we move forward.

The Ministry has identified 6 Principles that will achieve their vision to support

adults with a developmental disability to live as independently as possible in the

community and to support their full inclusion in all aspects of society. These

Principles are as follows: Fairness and Equity, Accessibility and Portability,

Safety and Security, Accountability, Sustainability, and Citizenship.

Over the next while you will be hearing more detail of how these Principles will

translate into supports for people with developmental disabilities and how our

agency will participate.

Our organization continues to struggle financially to meet the increasing costs of

doing business but we are always looking at ways to ensure we continue to offer

the very best services and supports possible with the resources we have.

In closing I would like to thank the fundraising committee for 2015 Christmas in

Italy. They helped to raise over $28,000.00. This is an extraordinary

accomplishment and we can’t wait for the 2016 “Christmas in Mexico”

Congratulations to Steven Baczynski who was recognized for

10 years of service at Wal-Mart!

Steven has greeted many customers as they arrive on

Mondays and Fridays to begin their shopping day. Steven also

organizes the shopping carts and helps customers in providing

excellent customer service. When Steven was asked by

Wal-Mart “Why should we hire you”, Steven responded

“Because I am the best one for the job”.

We congratulate Steven on his 10 years of service and his

dedication to his position at Wal-mart. Next time you shop at

Wal-mart and you see a face smiling back at you, say hi

to Steven.

We held our bi-annual Information Sharing Day at the Italo

Canadian Hall on October 20, 2015. We had approximately 60

stakeholders in attendance. The meal provided by Maria Catering

was excellent.

In April of 2015, Community Living Fort Erie invested in an online values training resource

called Conversations that Matter. Staff have being viewing educational videos monthly.

Each video delivers a message which staff are then asked to reflect on how the video impacts

on their day to day work. Through reflection staff can grow and identify areas for

improvement.

We decided we wanted to impact and reach out to other stakeholders as well by showing a

video at our Information Sharing Day. We chose an interview by Fred Ford titled

“Can a Group Home be an Institution”. This video discussed how Institutions are not just

about large congregate settings and large buildings but they are also a pattern of interactions.

He discusses how depersonalization can occur not just in Institutions but in community

settings as well. We hope that this video impacted you to affect positive change!!

We also showed a short YouTube video called “Know Your Rights: A Guide for Self Advocates”.

We encourage people who were not at this meeting to go on YouTube to watch this

educational video. It uses plain language to help people understand what their rights are.

Thank you to all those who attended and we hope to see everyone out at our next meeting

in June 2016!!

details of our On-Site Validation visit will

be shared at the end of January when we

receive the final report, but we are feeling

very good about the outcome.

Niagara Community Foundation “SIGNS” grant approval!! Niagara Community Foundation “SIGNS” grant approval!! Thanks to the generosity of The Niagara Community Foundation we have been able to make our organizational signage consistent with the province and with all other Public Relation materials being distributed by our organization. With the funding provided we were able to place new graphics over our six foot existing Round Sign and purchase and install a small sign on the lawn near the street. Our "point of entry" is attractive, in line with all marketing materials and consistent with all other Community Living Agencies in Ontario.

The Niagara Community Foundation improves the quality of life in Niagara through philanthropy.

Thank you for making a difference through the approval of this grant!!Thank you for making a difference through the approval of this grant!!
