This lifesaving piece of equipment, which cost over $16,000, facilitates consistent blood flow from the moment it is turned on, helping to improve a patient’s potential for a successful outcome. An Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) Unit was recently unveiled in our region thanks to generous donations from the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, Lions Clubs throughout the region, Gander Consumers Co-op and many other kind donors. This unit which costs $27,000 aids in the early detection and screening of infant hearing loss. The testing quickly measures a baby’s response to sound and takes only a couple of minutes to perform. Our Health Centre continues to be on the leading edge of infant screening thanks to our fabulous community partners. Shoppers Supports Rooming In Program Thanks to supporters of the Shoppers Drug Mart Tree of Life Project, a total of $7,480 was raised at the Gander and Wesleyville locations. This year's funds supported the Maternal Newborn Unit “Rooming In Program” at James Paton Memorial. Three Night Sleep Chairs were purchased to make it possible for the second parent to stay overnight with the new mom directly in the patient room. Our patient garden has become an invaluable component in providing holistic care for patients served at our health facility. It is a beautiful oasis for patients, patient families and healthcare staff dealing with the many stressors that can arise when experiencing health issues. We are extremely grateful to donors such as the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. They have truly impacted healthcare in Central Newfoundland!

Lakeside Homes Heartwood Tree UnveiledWe are very pleased to be able to bring this unique display to Lakeside Homes in Gander. This is a permanent, in-memoriam display which consists of engraved gold and silver leaves, each of which will commemorate the life of a friend or family member. This beautiful display graces the wall immediately inside the main entrance of Lakeside Homes.

Thanks to all staff and volunteers who helped make this project a reality. Special thanks to the Gander Lions Club for sponsoring the display and artist Wendy Sheppard of Pool’s Island for painting the wall mural.

All proceeds from the Heartwood Tree will support the health and well-being of the residents of Lakeside Homes. To dedicate your leaf, contact the Central Northeast Health Foundation at 256-5742, or contact the main office of Lakeside Homes at 256-8850. Forms are also available at www.cnehf.nl.ca.

Pediatric Simulation Units to Arrive at JPM Thanks to a couple of fall promotions at local businesses our Foundation is now expecting two new training simulators for the Professional Development Department at James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre. Thanks to the Gander Kia Drive Change event in 2013 and 2014 along with the 2014 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign, our Foundation has just ordered the Megacode Kid and SimBaby t ra in ing mannequins. Each mannequin makes it possible to present realistic emergency scenarios to help healthcare staff maintain and expand their skills.

“By integrating these simulators in our training, staff members become better prepared for emergencies involving infants and children,”said Dr. Jill Starkes, Pediatrician. “In the rare occurrence when a child needs to be resuscitated, we will be ready from the perspectives of both knowledge and hands-on experience. Thank you to Gander Kia and Tim Hortons for their efforts.”

In Memoriam Donations - A Thoughtful Gift Have you considered leaving a bequest or directing in memoriam gifts to your Health Foundation? When a loved one passes it can be comforting to know that your donations can help someone in your community in the future. For the family of the late Belle Sacrey of Gander, the idea didn’t come right away but when it did they knew an in memoriam donation was the right thing to do. “After our mother took sick our concentration was on her and there are so many things that go through your mind at the time,” said Jane Sacrey. “After spending time in the Palliative Care Unit at James Paton Memorial, my sister Diana made the suggestion that we donate a new mattress for the visitor’s bed in the room as the one we were using was in bad shape. It was like a light went on at the time because we won’t be the last people to need it. As a healthcare provider myself, I know the importance of investing in our own health and well-being. Helping make someone else’s stay a little more comfortable is a special way to honor our mother’s memory.”Families who have lost a loved one may consider selecting our Foundation as their charity of choice, and all donations received in memory of their loved one will be reserved for their preference of facility, equipment needs or department. The Central Northeast Health Foundation has In Memoriam cards available at funeral homes throughout the region or through our website at www.cnehf.nl.ca.

All gifts assist the Central Northeast Health Foundation in continuing to support the health programs and services of Central Health for the benefit of future generations.
