2 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2015

A Word from Doug Gellatly, OFSAA Executive Director

Gilbert Canada Ad.indd 1 12-08-14 3:16 PM

You may be aware that I am leaving OFSAA as of June 19th after 11 years as executive director. I have accepted a similar position with Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, an organization I worked for prior to joining OFSAA in 2004. This decision did not come lightly and I feel mixed emotions as I leave such a respected organization.

The past 11 years have brought constant challenges and rewards. I have had the honour of working with numerous volunteers who are committed to the motto “Education through School Sport.” The work that these teachers put forth for students is often taken for granted and many are unaware of all the effort required to operate school sport in the province. At the provincial level, I have had the opportunity to work with many inspirational leaders on the executive council, representatives’ council, and many committees. I have also been fortunate to work with several OFSAA presidents who have strong, effective, and differing leadership styles. I have learned from each of them. The list includes Walter Piovesan, Tracey Parish, Martin Ritsma, Lynn Kelman, and Jim Woolley.

Of course, my fellow staff members have always been very supportive and I am appreciative of the jobs they perform. These are very dedicated and hard-working people who believe in OFSAA and all it stands for. Working with these professionals on a day-to-day basis is a major reason I have found this job so enjoyable.

There are many highlights that come to mind when I reflect upon my time with OFSAA. Certainly, trips to championships and seeing student-athletes compete is at the top of the list. This is an essential part of the job because it always reinforced for me the reason for OFSAA’s existence – the student-athlete. Most memorable are my visits to the smaller communities where the OFSAA Championship is a big deal. I have grown particularly fond of North Western Ontario, having been to five or six events in that part of the province. I wish all students could have the experience of attending a championship there.

I have enjoyed attending OFSAA meetings, including the executive council, representatives’ council, and other committees. I enjoyed listening to varying opinions and passionate debates, both of which are important and healthy to the organization. I am amazed at the time people from across the province give to attend these gatherings. Many have commented to me over the years that their volunteer involvement with OFSAA was important to their professional and personal development.

School sport is founded upon education and this should always be its primary purpose. One of the strengths of OFSAA and its member associations is the unwavering commitment to education through sport. The rules, regulations, and policies all support these educational aims and objectives, and I hope that any attempts to pull school sport in a different direction are always strongly resisted.

When we move on to new ventures, it is usually the people we will miss most. That is undoubtedly the case for me. I have developed many friendships over the past 11 years and I will miss those relationships.

I thank all the staff and volunteers who I have worked with since 2004 and hope our paths will cross in the future. It has indeed been a privilege to serve OFSAA.

It is with mixed emotions I write to you as the outgoing Past President of OFSAA. The past seven years has been a very rewarding experience for me. I have had the opportunity to meet and work with amazing educators from Ontario and across Canada.

The student-athletes in Ontario provide us with inspiration and remind us of the excitement of competition and the pride in representing their school on the provincial stage. It has been a pleasure for me to travel the province and see provincial championships.

The teacher-coaches in the province are our most valuable resource. The driving force behind OFSAA is the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of volunteer teacher-coaches. Thank you for your dedication to “Education Through School Sport”. Your service to our student plays a role in their success in education as well as shapes their growth as citizens in the school community and in the communities where they live.

I would also like to thank the OFSAA staff: Doug, Beth, Shamus, Damien, Lexy, Mike, Devin, Diana, Peter, Brian, Ken and Jim. Your commitment to high school sports and your service to our student-athletes makes OFSAA an outstanding organization. I feel privileged to have worked with you for the last seven years.

I would also like to extend my thanks to Kathryn Wallace, Director of Education for Simcoe County District School Board for allowing me to serve on the OFSAA Executive. Thanks also to John Dance Superintendent of Education for the Simcoe County District School Board for your encouragement during my term at OFSAA.

Thank you for allowing me to lead OFSAA, an organization of dedicated educators that is known and respected in Ontario and Canada.

SOFSAA wishes Lynn Kelman all the best

Lynn Kelman is completing her term on the OFSAA executive council after seven years. She joined OFSAA as vice president in 2008, then moved into the president’s position in 2010, and has spent the past three years as past president.

Lynn has been involved in many aspects of school sport over her 33 years in education, including serving six years as the GBSSA representative on the OFSAA Representatives’ Council. She also sat on the OFSAA Board of Reference Transfers for eight years, including seven as chair, and has been involved with several other committees, including Future Directions, Classifications, and Championship Review.

Known for her leadership, integrity, and work ethic, Lynn has given countless hours to student-athletes, and is an impressive role model for female educators.

She is presently the principal of Banting Memorial High School in Alliston, and will retire at the end of the school year. Retirement won’t be quiet though, as Lynn and her husband Steve are excited about the arrival of their first grandchild this July.

We wish Lynn all the best in retirement and thank her for her remarkable contributions to school sport in Ontario.

Thank You, OFSAA By Lynn Kelman

OFSAA: How It WorksWhen the word governance is uttered, often people’s eyes immediately glaze over. While not an exciting topic or one that inspires, it is a necessary component of any organization and OFSAA is no exception.

As its name indicates, the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) is an organization comprised of 18 member associations. Each association runs its own affairs on a regional level, yet collectively they form the provincial body known as OFSAA.

At times those within the school sport system may disagree with a rule or policy, but it is important to note that OFSAA is a democratic organization and change can be affected. If a motion is properly submitted it will be debated and voted upon by the designated council within OFSAA, after being vetted by the appropriate committee.

If a coach, administrator, or athletic director would like to see change, a motion form is available on the OFSAA website, which can be completed and submitted to the OFSAA office (go to www.ofsaa.on.ca and click Forms). At times, you may wish to simply run the merits of an idea by a staff member or committee and it is suggested you call the OFSAA office to get some direction.

The key to remember is that OFSAA is a provincial organization with representation from across the province, and while not everyone will agree on a rule or policy, it is important to note that changes can be proposed and accomplished within a democratic environment.

Listed below are the various Councils within OFSAA, their composition, and a summary of their responsibilities.

A copy of OFSAA’s Articles and By-Laws is available at www.ofsaa.on.ca - About OFSAA.

6 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2015

News from the AGMThe OFSAA Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held April 16th – 17th with association representatives across the province in attendance.

The assembly voted on a number of motions, a selection of which are detailed here.

CLASSIFICATIONSAt the 2014 AGM, OFSAA’s classification system was changed to have three levels – A, AA, and AAA effective 2015, thus eliminating the AAAA category.

Effective in the 2015-16 school year associations shall place their schools in classifications for the following school year based on their student full-time equivalent enrolment as of October 31st of the current school year:

A = 1-500AA = 501-950AAA = 951+

An all-boys or all-girls school shall have their enrolment doubled for the purposes of determining student population numbers.

Additionally, OFSAA’s Northern associations maintains the adjustment of +100 students for upper cap at the “A” category and +50 for upper cap at the “AA” category.

Events which had been classified A/AA and AAA/AAAA (boys’ and girls’ hockey, boys’ and girls’ rugby, and boys’ field lacrosse) will now be: “A/AA” and “AAA”

ELIGIBILITY FOR COMPETITIONOFSAA Championships and Festivals for team sports shall only involve teams that have used OFSAA-eligible student-athletes in all competition during the school year. Any team using an ineligible student-athlete(s) in any competition during the school year forfeits the right to participate in the OFSAA Championship or Festival. Full definition available on page 9.

Teams sports shall be considered to be: boys’ golf, field hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, curling, baseball, rugby, field lacrosse, and soccer.

TRANSFER POLICYStudents who attended an alternative school or alternative program who are returning to the school they attended prior, are not considered transfer students provided they did not play sports while at the alternative school or alternative program.

RECRUITINGOFSAA recognizes that recruiting of student-athletes conflicts with the aims and objectives of the organization.

SAs a result, a more detailed section has been added in the OFSAA by-laws, which includes a definition of recruitment, rationale for a recruitment policy, and a list of indicators. Full definition available on page 8.

SPORT CRITERIAOFSAA has adopted new guidelines to determine which events shall be considered to have OFSAA Championship or Festival status. Each Championship and Festival shall undergo an annual review to determine if it is meeting the criteria. Updated criteria will help OFSAA reflect current participation trends in secondary schools.

Sports that have Championship status, and no longer meet the criteria, shall be moved to Festival status. A sport shall remain a Festival for a maximum of five years if it meets Festival criteria. After five years if the sport does not meet Championship status it will no longer operate under OFSAA jurisdiction. Festivals who do not meet those criteria will have one year to meet the criteria or will no longer operate under OFSAA jurisdiction.

BASKETBALLOFSAA has elected to transition from NFHS basketball rules and adopt FIBA playing regulations in September 2016 for both girls’ and boys’ basketball with the following exceptions:

• A 35 second shot clock will be used. Full reset on fouls and shots off the rim

• Federation lines will be used even when FIBA lines are available

• Federation timeout procedure, and game length will be used including overtime

• No dunking in the warm-up will be permitted

FOOTBALLThe OFSAA Football Bowl Games series has decided on a new Festival format. For the next two years (2015 & 2016) the following nine games will be played, with one of two associations drawn to compete in 2015, and the other automatically competing in that bowl game in 2016. The remaining nine associations will be drawn to determine their pairing.

OFSAA Adopts New Recruitment Policy

There may be many legitimate times that a school representative and/or coach of a school team will be in contact with students from another school. Therefore, indicators of recruiting have been developed to provide parameters of behavior and expectations for coaches and other school representative(s).

• a school representative shall not initiate contact with any student who does not attend, or does not directly feed into a school, in order to suggest, encourage or explain a transfer to a different school.

• a school representative shall not encourage any other person, including past and present players, to contact any student to suggest, encourage or explain a transfer to a different school.

• a school representative shall not permit a student who is not currently enrolled at a school, or whose present school does not directly feed into the representative’s school, to participate in team practices or participate in scheduled team activities (including travel to games/events, team meetings or trips).

• a school representative shall not permit a student who is not currently enrolled at the representative’s school, or whose present school does not directly feed into the representative’s school, to attend “open gym” at the representative’s school or attend spring or summer practices, games or camps specifically designated for enrolled students.

• a school representative shall not entice a student who is not currently enrolled at the representative’s school, or whose present school does not directly feed into the representative’s school, into transferring to the representative’s school.

• where a coach or school representative is approached by a student-athlete or representatives of student-athlete who is not enrolled at the school or at a feeder school, with inquiries concerning the school’s sports teams or programs, the coach or school representative must direct the student-athlete or representative of the student-athlete to the school administration.

OFSAA has enhanced its Recruitment Policy effective the 2015-16 season.

Definition of Recruitment:

Recruiting is defined as a representative of a school, either directly or through another party, encouraging a student to attend a school other than that in whose catchment area he or she resides and/or within a shared catchment area for the purpose of being involved in extracurricular sport. The school representative could be a teacher, administrator, school district employee, school employee, student, parent, alumnus, or any person representing themselves as a school contact.

Rationale:

A recruiting prohibition discourages exploitation of students; prevents over emphasis of athletics; gives average student-athletes more opportunity to participate; discourages adults from jeopardizing a student’s eligibility; and prevents misuse of athletic programs.

All teams competing at OFSAA Championships or Festivals must have only used eligible players in all competition during the school year as reflected in this new rule that was approved at the 2015 Annual General Meeting.

OFSAA Championships or Festivals for team sports shall only involve teams which have used OFSAA-eligible student-athletes in all competition during the school year. OFSAA-eligible means the student meets all eligibility requirements as defined in the OFSAA playing regulations and the OFSAA by-laws. Any team using an ineligible student-athlete(s) in any competition during the school year forfeits the right to participate in the OFSAA Championship or Festival.

New Team Eligibility Rules

Notes:

1. The term “competition” does not exclusively refer to league play; it is defined as anytime two teams play against each other on a playing surface, whether in Ontario or elsewhere.

2. The requirement that only OFSAA-eligible athletes be used in all competition applies solely to teams qualifying for OFSAA Championships or Festivals. This does not apply to teams in leagues that do not send teams to OFSAA Championships or Festivals unless otherwise stated by the local or regional high school athletic body of which the school is a member.

3. Team sports shall be considered to be:

a. Boys’ golf b. Field hockey c. Football d. Basketball e. Volleyball f. Hockey g. Curling h. Baseball i. Rugby j. Field Lacrosse k. Soccer

A student-athlete may not receive or be offered any remuneration of any kind or receive or be offered any inducement of any kind, which is not made available to all students who enroll in or apply to a school.

Inducements for athletic purposes include, but are not limited to:

• offer or acceptance of money or other valuable consideration such as free or reduced tuition during the regular school year or summer school by any person associated with a school.

• offer or acceptance of room, board, textbooks or clothing, or financial allotment for textbooks or clothing.

• offer or acceptance of pay for work that is not performed or that is in excess of the amount regularly paid for such service.

• offer or acceptance of free transportation by any person associated with the school.

• offer or acceptance of a residence with any person associated with the school which would result with the student-athlete living with a non-custodial parent.

• offer or acceptance of any privilege not afforded to non-athletes.

• offer or acceptance of free or reduced rent for parents or guardians.

• offer or acceptance of payments of moving expenses of parents or guardians or assistance with the moving of parents or guardians.

• offer or acceptance of employment of parent (s) or guardian(s) in order to entice the family to move to a certain community if any person associated with

the school makes the offer.

• offer or acceptance of help in securing a post secondary athletic scholarship.

• offer or acceptance of the opportunity to gain significant playing time.

• offer or acceptance of the opportunity to be associated with a more competitive team

Grade 8 Recruitment

A school representative(s) may make general presentations (not just athletic) to eighth grade students (not just athletes). There should be a diversity of presenters, speaking on a variety of topics to students of all interests.

When an eighth grade student or the parents of that student, contacts the coach or school representative about attending the representatives school, the coach or representative shall refer the student or parent to the appropriate school administration

High school coaches or their representatives may not attend grade school or youth club games for the purpose of evaluating and recruiting specific prospective athletes.

OPEN HOUSE - The intent of an open house is to allow incoming grade 8 students to gather information regarding curriculum, programs, and the admissions process. School representatives may provide general information to prospective incoming students but no specific details or enticements as to participation if they were to enroll.

Thanks once again to the grant from the Ministry of Education, almost 140 schools from across the province received up to $700 to add a

new or non-traditional sport or physical activity to their programs, and to provide students with a leadership opportunity in the implementation of these programs. As the Ministry was very pleased with the results of last year’s Try Day programs, hopefully Try Day funding will again be approved for the coming school year. Watch the OFSAA website later in the summer for announcements re: funding for Try Day.

Think ahead as to what new activity may motivate all your students to get active, enjoy participation in physical activities, and how to

incorporate your student leaders into the program, and be ready to apply for Try Day funding…if it is available.

Some ideas from this year’s programs … scooters, disc golf, pickleball, omnikin, speedminton, kayaking, new approaches and equipment for fitness and many more!

There are plenty of resources available for any activity both within your community, and from the sport governing bodies. Make use of them when developing your programs.

STAY TUNED TO THE OFSAA WEBSITE FOR THE LATEST NEWS ABOUT TRY DAY!

Schools accepted for funding will be notified of their acceptance by OFSAA staff within 2 weeks of the receipt of the application, and a reporting package and posters will be sent to the approved schools. If you do not receive a reply within this time frame, please contact:

12 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2015

Athletics, for me as for many, is an important part of the high school experience.

I love sports, and in high school I’ve played football, hockey, tennis, and track, to varying degrees of success. I’ve tried out for soccer and baseball, with varying degrees of ineptitude.

I don’t regret trying out for those sports, indeed the opposite; I enjoyed it and see them as learning experiences.

For example, when I tried out for the soccer team I learned firsthand what a ‘nutmeg’ is. In scrimmage an opponent was approaching with the ball. I challenged him, he saw an opening and put the ball between my legs, smoothly continuing toward the net while I tripped myself and collapsed in a pile to the good-natured catcalls of the rest of the soccer team hopefuls. The other player apologized later. I laughed it off, and told him I would have done the same had I anywhere near the required skill.

The moral of that self-deprecating anecdote? Good sportsmanship, for one. Being able to be completely shown up and laugh it off. Another could be perseverance: after ensuring my ankles weren’t broken I got back up and re-joined the play. Also I learned to keep my legs closed when someone runs towards me with a soccer ball, a useful life lesson.

I’ve learned many things from high school athletics. Some things are practical, like the good sportsmanship

and perseverance, but also how much clothing you need to wear under your pads during a football game when the temperature is cold enough the precipitation isn’t entirely certain whether it wants to be liquid or solid and settles on that unpleasant intermediary.

One of the most practical skills I’ve learned through sports is how to deal with authority. I’ve had all kinds of coaches: good, bad and ambivalent coaches, as well as coaches I’ve loved and loathed. They are the authority figures on the team, and must be treated as such, if only because they are the ones who decide how much field, ice, or court time you get.

I’ve learned diplomacy with coaches is rather important, but this skill also translates to working with teachers and bosses. I appreciate all my coaches. They volunteer their time and something can be learned from each one.

I’ve learned some things of questionable practicality, such as how to drop a tennis racket so that it bounces right back into your hand, which looks cool the small percentage of times it actually works. Also, it’s really not very good for the racket. I wouldn’t suggest attempting to obtain this skill.

In terms of social development, high school sports have helped me considerably. I came to high school from a non-feeder elementary school. Entering Grade 9, I knew about as many people as I have fingers. After school that first day I found my way into the football change room and into equipment and onto the field, where suddenly I had to work with these new people to avoid being run over by the big Grade 10s. I cannot overstate how important football was in helping me through the transition between elementary and high school.

Many of my best friendships formed through high school athletics.

Throughout my five years of high school I’ve played an accumulated nine seasons of various sports, with only one NDA championship, which was winning the Nugget Shield for hockey last week.

I didn’t play sports to be a champion, though that’s always the goal. I played sports because of the lessons learned and the camaraderie shared and I don’t regret a single freezing football practice or early morning hockey game.

The School Sport Experience By Cam Ford

This story has been contributed to the Bulletin by Grade 12 Widdifield SS student-athlete Cam Ford to illustrate his experience in high school sports.

You MUST obtain OFSAA sanction for:

• Any interprovincial tournament or meet you are attending

• Invitational events you are hosting that involve out-of-province participants

• Any state or NFHS-sanctioned tournaments or meets you are attending in the United States (Some American tournaments do not indicate whether they are sanctioned so it is best to obtain OFSAA sanction to be on the safe side)

Failure to obtain OFSAA sanction will result in sanctioning by the OFSAA Board of Reference - Sanctions, and may cause the invited teams to be sanctioned by their home association.

At Sanctioned events:

• All participants must be eligible under the rules and regulations of the Provincial or State Association of which they are members

• A teacher-coach will be present and responsible for the athletes throughout the duration of your event.

Note: OFSAA sanction is not required for one exhibition game out-of-province.

The Process:

• All forms are on the OFSAA website.

• Apply for OFSAA sanction at least 30 days prior to the start of the event.

• Indicate in your promotional mailing that the event is ‘OFSAA-sanctioned’.

• The form to obtain OFSAA sanction to host an event must first go to one of your Association Representatives for their approval and they will then forward the request to OFSAA.

• Applications for out-of-province sanction come directly to OFSAA.

• Athletic Directors should double check that coaches have applied for OFSAA sanction when they are planning to attend out-of-province invitational events.

Once you have applied for sanction, check the OFSAA website to make sure your paperwork has been received and processed (ofsaa.on.ca/Events/Sanctioned Events), and that all the details are accurate. Questions regarding sanctions should be directed to Diana Ranken, Sanctions Coordinator, at [email protected].

KSA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTSKSA announces its high school basketball tournaments for 2015, sanctioned by NFHS. Any Ontario high school planning on attending these tournaments must apply for OFSAA sanction at least 30 days prior to the start of the event. Every team is guaranteed 3 games and can request additional games if desired. Each tournament format is either a 4-team or an 8-team bracket and is based on competitive level, enrolment, strength of schedule and winning percentage from previous years. High Hopes & School Slopes By Devin Gray

Ben Smith stood on the OFSAA podium and received his ribbon after finishing eighth place in Giant Slalom at the Alpine Championships and smiled.

Decked out in OFSAA Alpine gear, Smith was proud of what he’d worked hard to accomplish in a relatively inaccessible school sport, and ready to show off when he returned to the halls of Bell High School near Ottawa where he’ll get his picture on the wall – as is tradition.

The path to OFSAA started many years ago with Ben’s older sister and cousin on the team and through their encouragement and the leadership of coach Elaine Wright, Smith finally ended up on the podium.

“You can’t just go to the gym and watch these kids,” said Wright. “We’re lucky to have hills like Camp Fortune just a short 40 minute drive away. Most schools train at night with lights in dark. You can’t go to the gym or field and set up a racecourse, there’s definitely a commitment from these kids.”

As a skier it was Ben’s first time at OFSAA a berth earned as the top overall skier in NCSSAA. Smith competed as an individual but hung close with South Carleton who took him in as part of their team.

Smith’s entire 12-person team at Bell High School was made up of level 1 skiers this year, meaning they can’t have skied competitively beyond age of ten. Most of the team is school-trained. Though Smith has skied since he could go between his father’s legs at four, he didn’t race competitively until high school.

Of OFSAA’s two disciplines this made Slalom more difficult for those not used to physically hitting the gates with their poles. He stuck his first run with the sixth fastest time, but fell on his second Slalom run and ended up placing tied for 119th.

“He’s level 1, he’s inexperienced, and he made a mistake and he fell,” said Wright. “Unfortunately, that’s ski racing. It just happened to him at provincials, maybe he was looking ahead to the medal already.”

Giant Slalom was more to Ben’s skill-set and he recovered himself well enough to place. A natural athlete, Smith is also a talented baseball player.

“He’s really grown and that helps on a day like today because he’s big and strong and he’s got the weight,” said Wright. “He’s a good athlete and it certainly helps to be a good athlete in this sport.”

Wright is proud of Smith’s accomplishments, having coached his sister and cousin on the team. When Smith heads downhill, Wright skis alongside the barrier to shout tips and encouragement.

Smith recognizes the impact Wright has had as a coach: “The main thing she reinforces is just repetitive practicing, practicing, and that’s the only way you’re going to get better so we just keep going down the hill and eventually I got good enough to come to OFSAA.”

Not only was Wright representing Bell High School as Smith’s coach, she’s also the convenor and has convened OFSAA Alpine many times. Though she says this Championship is her last, she says she’ll be back in a volunteer capacity.

Wright’s seen OFSAA Alpine and OFSAA in general change through her years involved in high school sports: “It’s absolutely grown across the province and it’s being run way more professionally than it used to be. We have a really great committee with great people. I’ve been involved with these since 1988, I was a first-year teacher and we’re light years ahead now. The professionalism of the way these events are run, it’s a well-oiled machine to make this happen with this many kids and coaches”

Please Support OFSAA’s School Sport SponsorsOFSAA is fortunate to have several companies supporting school sport in Ontario. Official equipment has been play-tested and endorsed by experienced teacher-coaches. Please support these sponsors by using their products.

Seeing a student-athlete like Ben smiling on the podium makes it all worth it for Wright who also hopes she’s instilled a life-long love of not just athletics, but also education.

“Years from now he could have kids, he could become a coach, there’s lots of ways he can give back to the sport and he’s the kind of kid who would do that.”

In Memoriam - John Hayman 1922-2014John Hayman was a past president of OFSAA (1976-78), and of the Canadian School Sport Federation. He was a strong proponent of ‘fair play’ in school sport and helped guide OFSAA through a growth period during his term on the Executive. Throughout his retirement years John enjoyed extensive travelling and maintained his passion for sport, especially golf, spending his winters in Florida with his wife so he could golf year round. He was a Rotarian, served as president of the Retired Teachers Association in Goderich, and was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame. He served as principal for Quinte S.S. for many years, and their resource centre is named in his memory.

OFSAA recognized John’s contributions to school sport and to his community by nominating him for the Queen’s Jubilee Award in 2000 - an honour he truly appreciated. Despite his many accomplishments, his family was the most important element of his life and we hope their many good memories have helped them deal with John’s loss.

(Thanks to John’s daughter and wife for providing some insight into John’s life.)

On May 2nd North Bay thanked the many volunteers who have contributed to sport programs not only in their community but provincially and nationally, and several have been very involved in OFSAA activities.

Heather Chambers was inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame as a builder of sport for more than four decades. She has served on the OFSAA Board for 33 years, as chair of the Committee for Girls’ activities, as a championship convening committee member, and as a member of the Constitutional Review Committee, a position she still holds. During her teaching career at West Ferris SS, Heather coached basketball, volleyball, and track and field, was a multi-year convenor at all levels for several sports, and still managed to serve as president of the local Association (NDA) and of NOSSA,. For 17 years Heather also organized the Near North basketball tournament.

She has also given freely of her time and expertise to various non-school groups. Heather assisted in the development of the city’s ‘Fair Play Manual’ and was a founding member of Sport North Bay which she has chaired since 2006. She organized volunteers and took on important roles for the Olympic Torch Relay, the World Ringette Championships, and the recent Ontario Special Olympics. School sport and sport in general are much appreciative of the ongoing dedication and commitment of Heather.

Tom Cook, a former teacher-coach at Widdifield SS, was also inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame as a builder. Nordic skiing is indeed the sport in which he is most involved, however, during his teaching career he also coached football, cross country running and alpine skiing. On the Executive side, he has served as president of NDA, NOSSA and the Nordic Ski Club. Tom convened and played major roles in the OFSAA Nordic ski championships hosted by North Bay and convened several NDA and NOSSA championships. Lorie Tremblay, a former NOSAA representative to OFSAA, and a teacher-coach at ESC Algonquin, and Heather Windrem, long time chair of the OFSAA Soccer Sport Advisory Committee and a teacher-coach at Widdifield SS, received special recognition for their contribution to and development of girls’ soccer in North Bay. They were instrumental in starting the girls’ NDA soccer league for the North Bay schools.

Teacher-coaches are valuable volunteers in their schools and their communities.

We congratulate these special award recipients and join in thanking them for their commitment to sport and to OFSAA.

Character Athlete Award 2014-15OFSAA’s Character Athlete Award celebrates the efforts of the exceptional student-athletes in Ontario who best exemplify the characteristics that OFSAA is founded on.

Nominations come to the OFSAA office detailing the exceptional character of student-athletes across Ontario, inspiring those around them with their involvement on the playing field and in the classroom, in both school and community.

Selecting just one boy and one girl recipient of the OFSAA Character Athlete Award is never easy, but the following two individuals stood out for their commitment to OFSAA’s values of leadership, equity, respect and sportsmanship.

Kyra Krueger Nominated by: Pauline Fidler

Kyra is a Grade 12 student at Medway High School in Arva, Ontario where she’s active in her school leading programs and councils while balancing time with school work and time on the

badminton, volleyball and basketball teams.

A member of the Student Athletic Association all four years, Kyra was co-president this year. She’s also been involved with Youth for Social Justice, Student Council, Reach for the Top, tutored Math, French and gave fiddle lessons, the Lead Out Loud Club, Best Buddies Club, and Youth for Acceptance. There’s more, but it’s almost too much to name here in one space! In total Kyra’s graduating with upwards of 250 volunteer hours.

“In the three seasons I coached her on the basketball team, Kyra not only shone as an outstanding player and leader, but also in terms of the way she treated those around her,” said DE teacher and Medway basketball coach Erin Murphy. “I also had the pleasure of working with Kyra in her role as a peer support in my Physical Education class with D.E. students. Kyra’s thoughtfulness, ability to listen and handle the challenges that arose while working with students with special needs made her one of the best peer supporters I have ever worked with.”

“Kyra also took on the head organizing role for Medway’s 2014 Special Olympic Team,” said physical education teacher Craig Watson. “Over the course of 40 days in April and May of 2014, she planned multiple training sessions for 25 athletes, 50 other peer coaches and 10 teaching staff. She had the ability to bring out the best in each individual.”

These quotes were just a couple of the many positive recommendations OFSAA received on behalf of Kyra, demonstrating a background of support from those she’s worked with at Medway and in the community. For representing OFSAA’s values so well she earned the title of Character Athlete. Congrats Kyra!

Michael Kay Nominated by: Mike Darling

Michael is a Grade 12 student at Oakridge S.S. in London, Ontario where he is a member of school sports teams year-round: volleyball, basketball, and badminton.

But it’s his dedication to volunteering that elevates him above a number of exceptional student-athletes for this award. Michael has completed over 200 volunteer hours in four years through coaching both boys and girls with the Ramblers Basketball house league for grades 6, 7, and 8, refereeing under the London Board of Basketball Officials, serving as a London Leader in Training, Oakridge Ambassador, and Oakridge Peer Mentor.

“Michael has such a strong love for the game of basketball and his community that he spends countless hours in the gym ensuring that young boys are afforded the same opportunities as he was at a young age,” said his nominating teacher-coach Mike Darling. “He does all of this and still earns honour roll every single year.”

This isn’t the first time Michael has been recognized having also won the 2014-15 Ted Early Award for best student-athlete citywide, and the SPECTRA award for Male Athlete of the Year. SPECTRA stands for Sportsmanship, Participation, Excellence, Character, Teamwork, Respect and Achievement - pretty close to OFSAA’s values.

His coaches recognize the growth he’s made into a mature, and vocal leader with his teams and his work with younger grades makes him a mentor and a worthy recipient of OFSAA’s Character Athlete Award.

OFSAA GYMNASTICS FESTIVALSudbury May 3-5, 2015

Special thanks to Jo-Anne Bradley and her NOSSA Committee for hosting this year’s OFSAA Gymnastics Festival. Despite some roadblocks, the event was very successful from the starting ‘Caribbean-themed’ banquet to the final awards presentation. Over 250 girls from 42 schools participated in artistic and aerobic gymnastics. This festival provides an opportunity for both the true high-school trained gymnasts and for more advanced club athletes to represent their school and enjoy the OFSAA experience.

Deb Clare, a teacher-coach from Centennial SS in Belleville was the recipient of the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award recognizing over 30 years of dedication and commitment to girls’ gymnastics. She is a former convenor of OFSAA gymnastics and an excellent role model for the girls - a well-deserved honour. Bill Pierson was also honoured for his longtime involvement with girls’ gymnastics at Napanee DSS with the presentation of the Gene Sutton Award. During his teaching career and in his retirement, his tireless efforts have kept school gymnastics alive and his influence has encouraged others to get involved. Congratulations, Bill! Jack Miller and Bill Simon received special recognition plaques for the support they have provided for many years for the girls’ gymnastics programs in the Sudbury area schools. Their efforts have made NOSSA school gymnastics strong and exciting. Thanks to you both on behalf of all the student-athletes and teacher-coaches.

24 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2015

This year’s Alpine Ski Championships were once again held at Blue Mountain Resort. 355 skiers from 70 schools representing 14 associations came together to compete for individual and team honours in Boys and Girls Slalom and Giant Slalom races. Conditions over the two days were excellent, allowing each racer to perform at the highest level possible.

As has been the case in previous years, the banquet was held following the Slalom races on Monday evening. Awards were presented to the top eight individuals and the top eight teams in each category. At the conclusion of the dinner, Spectro Photography put on a slide show that featured an action photo of every racer.

There were some special recognition awards presented at the banquet as well. Dan Bartolucci from Sudbury Marymount Academy (NOSSA) received the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award for his outstanding leadership and commitment to high school sport. Along with his involvement in Alpine Skiing, Dan has convened and coached a number of sports during his 14 year teaching career, including golf,

tennis, soccer, and badminton. Ken Coffin and Elaine Wright were also presented with awards that recognized their long term commitment to Alpine Skiing and the important role that each has played in the development of the Championships over the past 10 years.

A special thank you to this year’s organizing committee, chaired by Elaine Wright, event sponsors, the numerous volunteers who support the event year in and year out and the Blue Mountain Staff for making the 2015 OFSAA Alpine Skiing Championships such a memorable event.

Congratulations to all of the student-athletes who participated and to this year’s winners.

The OFSAA Badminton Championship found its way back to Markham for the second straight year – Only this time, participants were treated to something new. The Markham Pan Am Center showcased the best High School players in the province and proved to be a great venue. Having 16

courts under one roof made for amazing spectating. Co-convenors Dan Blanchard and Don Carmichael once again lead the charge using student and staff volunteers from both Middlefield Collegiate and Unionville High School.

The Hilton Markham Grand Ballroom was site for this year’s championship banquet where students were treated to a classy atmosphere. Following dinner,

guest speaker Bethany So, who attended Agincourt Collegiate Institute and represented Canada in various badminton world events, amused the crowd with her “Top 10 ways you know you are a Badminton player”. The evening concluded with the presentation of the Leadership in School Sport Award to Dan Blanchard from Middlefield Collegiate (YRAA) for his years of coaching high school sport. Dan has coached boys’ and girls’ badminton teams for 20 years. His ability to be a positive influence has resulted in many students learning and enjoying the sport of badminton.

Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches for treating all those in attendance to amazing badminton action and exciting championship matches. Thanks again to the host organizing committee for all their hard work ensuring a memorable experience for all participants.

Three out of the top four seeds did not disappoint, qualifying for the quarter finals of the tournament. Ridley College (CISAA) fought their way to the gold medal game once again and this time, the first in school history, captured the gold medal and prevailed over the #1 seed and strong team from O’Gorman High School (NEOAA-AANEO). Congratulations to Livingston Bromwell, Sharmar Burrows, Rafael Buzali, Jarrod Camroux-Peacock, Thomas Crosbie, Daniel Jiang, Alex Mcrae, Tim Sullivan, Xiaozhou Wang and coaches David Whitty, Pete Doyle and Joshua Doan.

There was no shortage of food at the banquet as the convenors arranged for a hearty Italian meal at the Immaculate Conception Church. The OFSAA Boys’ AA Basketball Championship took place in our nation’s capital, Ottawa, On. The host at Mother Teresa H.S (NCSSAA) lead by Mike Rowley put on a great event and raised the bar with this year`s tournament. 30 THE BULLETIN SPRING 2015

The OFSAA Boys’ AAAA Basketball Championship, gathered the top high school basketball teams from around the province. For the competitors in the AAAA category it was a chance to make history as the last winners of the AAAA Championship – OFSAA will eliminate the division starting in the 2015-16 school year. With that extra incentive on the line the teams were primed for some hard-fought competition.

Convenor Danielle Chevalier organized the banquet in a grand room with music playing, players dressed in shirts and ties, and even featured basketball-related centrepieces. The banquet also happened to be at the same venue across the hall from the OFSAA Girls’ AAAA Volleyball players. For her efforts as convenor in this and past Championships and background in school sports, Danielle Chevalier was named the winner of the Leadership in School Sport Award. The guest speaker was Windsor Lancers head coach and Championship co-convenor Chris Oliver, who spoke about his team qualifying for the CIS Nationals and what it took to play at the next level both physically and mentally.

Another important finale came with basketball powerhouse Eastern Commerce’s last rumble. The school is due to close at the end of the current year and with fewer than 70 total students attending it’s amazing they were still able to compete at the AAAA level. Eastern played well and ended up losing the consolation final.

Semi-final matches were played at the University of Windsor with Edmund Campion defeating Father Henry Carr with a dominant fourth quarter run, and St. Mike’s rolling over a game Pine Ridge squad. The Finals were

held at St. Clair College’s new facilities where St. Michaels completed their undefeated season to take OFSAA gold.

Congratulations to Jahmal Abbey-Wright, Isaac Atta, Marcus Carr, Danilo Djuricic, Parker Joyce, Kaion Julien-Grant, Nelson Kaputo, Kobey Ketavong, Anthony Nusca, Nikola Paradina, D’Andre Ramsden, Marcus Yurchuk, and coaches Nunzio Corrente, Daniel Lumsden, Branko Samsa, and Jeff Zownir.

The committee awarded the Team Sportsmanship Award to St. Edmund Campion who displayed sportsmanship and team play throughout from the head coach to the rest of the staff to the last man down the bench. A dashing young bunch that should compete at OFSAA for years to come. Congratulations to all coaches and students.

Championship Results

Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario played host to this year’s 2015 OFSAA Nordic Skiing Championship. Perry Sakki (Sudbury SS) and Kerry Abols (Lockerby Composite) led a team of enthusiastic volunteers in hosting a memorable championship which has raised the bar for Nordic Skiing. The fantastic facilities at Laurentian allowed for challenging trails and great viewing areas including a wide-open start, finish and exchange areas for relays. Who could forget THE WALL! Skiers woke up on day one to beautiful sunny skies, however temperatures resulted in delayed start times and shortened courses for all competitors. Congratulations to all athletes and coaches who dealt with the changes with patience and understanding.

Following the conclusion of races on day one, athletes and coaches attended the championship banquet at the Steelworker’s Union Hall in Sudbury. This included special guest speaker Will Kershaw, father of Canadian National team skier Devon Kershaw. Following the feeding frenzy that occurs when you pack hundreds of hungry skiers into a room after a day of racing, the crowd listened intently as the Leadership in School Sport Award was presented to

Kerry Abols from Lockerby Composite School in Sudbury. Kerry has been instrumental in the success of the local Nordic Ski club and the Nordic program at his school, creating a positive experience that has athletes eager to learn the sport. The evening finished with the return of the social dance. Surprising to see that much energy after a day of racing.

Congratulations to all skiers, for being great role models for sportsmanship in high school sport.

Once again we would like to thank Perry and Kerry for their leadership and commitment in hosting a fantastic championship.

The Etobicoke Olympium served as the host venue for this year’s OFSAA Swimming Championships. The energy on the deck was electric throughout the two days and not even some snow and freezing rain could dampen the students’ spirits.

Sheila Megson of Stephen Lewis SS in Mississauga (ROPSSAA) and her committee and multitude of volunteers did a fantastic job of organizing the Championship, which ran smoother and smoother as the Championship went on. Championship food sales were donated by the Championship committee to Right to Play to support their many programs. The Championship ran at a frenetic pace, in the afternoons especially, but the quality of the Championship was at a very high level.

During the Championship, Shannon Henkel, of Bluevale Collegiate (CWOSSA) was awarded the 2015 OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award for her contributions to swimming and school sport.

Nine new records were set throughout the two days of competition and students, teachers, parents and officials all appreciated the effort put into organizing this year’s Championship.

Championship Results

The 2015 OFSAA Girls’ A Volleyball Championship was held in Hamilton and was highly competitive and exciting. Convenor Brad Heidbuurt of Hamilton District Christian High School and his organizing committee did a great job organizing a successful and well-run Championship and should be congratulated for a job well done.

A great treat for all involved was the breakfast banquet at the Warplane Heritage Museum where the participants were able to enjoy a great meal and be immersed in history as well. Harry Blyleven of Hamilton District CHS was presented with the Leadership in School Sport Award for his years of service and dedication to school sport. ESC Monseigneur-Bruyere (WOSSAA) received the Sportsmanship Award for their great show of respect and fair play throughout the Championship. The action was fast and furious over three days with the

play culminating in a 5 set Consolation Final and Bronze Medal game. Toronto District Christian High School came away with the gold medal with a 25-18 25-8 25-15 win over ESC Monseigneur-Bruyere.

The Windsor Family Credit Union Arena was the location for this year’s OFSAA Wrestling Championships. Over 800 of the best high school wrestlers in the province competed in over 2000 matches over the two-day event. Many exciting and intense matches took place

in the preliminaries leading up to the medal matches. As always at wrestling sportsmanship was shown in both victory and defeat.

Convenor Dave Hawkins from Tecumseh Vista Academy and his committee put in countless hours in preparing for this event. Their preparation, organization and hard work paid off, resulting in a well run and exciting championship. Thanks to all.

The Leadership in School Sport Award was also presented to Dave Hawkins. Besides starting two high school wrestling programs in the Windsor area, Dave also coaches football and sits on the OFSAA SAC Committee for

Wrestling and Football. The Award was presented by three of the many coaches Dave has mentored. Thank-you Dave for your great contribution to high school athletics.
