DESCRIPTION

Cmpetition brief: Design ideas for next generation relocatable classrooms. This is an ideas competition. It seeks to elicit innovation, creativity and blue-sky thinking; to encourage entrants to consider how things can be “otherwise”.

Considering how things can be “otherwise”...

School doesn't have to be an ordinary boring set of boxy buildings, but instead it can provide exciting and positive spatial experiences wherechildren can study and play. The proposed innovative design solution makesit possible to adapt relocatable schools to any location and parameters, and to create optimum conditions for 21 century learning.

The SCHOOL concept proposes a fresh and originalapproach to creating, re-configuring and re-locating built space. Imaginesuch architecture as a construction set for future school making. The schoolconstruction set consists of modular components, which can be combined inmany ways to form unique spatial combinations. The manufacture of thesecomponents is computer controlled in the factory permitting optimumefficiency in manufacture, reducing waste and therefore environmentalimpact. Simple equilateral triangle geometry establishes the pattern logic.Triangulation introduces new design opportunities and perspectives into aworld of orthogonal solutions. High specification material choices anddesign adaptability ensure a high performance, comfortable, sustainableschool environment.

There are four functional component types:are the base elements of the system, designed to fit

into a 6m by 6m grid. They can be used to form classrooms, recreation andcommon spaces. Combinations of these modules create built space whichaccommodates individual, small and large group activities. Modules have alight and simple wooden construction with the supporting elementsconnected at one of the corners. Such a design solution makes it possible tocreate large interior spaces. Geometry and construction of the interiorspace provides: improved acoustic qualities and an opportunity to achievedesirable light conditions.

are introduced into the pattern to provide core andstorage spaces, buffer zones, entrance groups, connection between volumes. They follow the geometry of the main modules, but smaller in size: 3m by3m in plan.

follows the logic of initial triangulation and formsa secondary overhead pattern. It provides shade, by reflecting direct sunlight. Using wind flows between canopy and main build structure it cools theair during hot summer season. The canopy creates a sheltered outdoorspace on hot days or during rain.

are placed on 12m/12m grid exactly inside the voids whichthe modular pattern creates, to support the canopy.

The SCHOOL proposes a new “school house” image: unusualand delightful, but practical and effective, easy to manufacture, constructand transport. The fllexible pattern structure makes this easily adaptable todifferent sites and climates.
