Why radio email?

Page 10: Winlink 2000 Radio E-mail Most Popular Uses Marine Mobiles RV’ers Expeditions, Missions Emergency and Disaster Communications

Why: The traditional role of Ham Radio EmComm support

• Report health and welfare of affected public • Voice communications among served agencies

(EOCs, hospitals, shelters, PODs, etc.) • Site tactical support – Incident Command, search

and rescue, damage and storm reporting (SKYWARN).

• Formal written emergency traffic handling

Page 11: Winlink 2000 Radio E-mail Most Popular Uses Marine Mobiles RV’ers Expeditions, Missions Emergency and Disaster Communications

Why our traditional traffic handling methods fail for today’s served agencies!• Agencies want EMAIL backup! It’s 2007!

– Need procedures, lists and diagrams delivered– E-mail with complex attachments is the defacto format– Hand-written message forms are rarely used

• Post 9/11: Agencies insist on NIMS, ICS and NRP compliance.

• Voice, Morse code, and even traditional packet radio won’t do… – way too slow, translation required– too inflexible– too prone to error– doesn’t go user-to-user.

How?…do Hams do that?

Page 22: Winlink 2000 Radio E-mail Most Popular Uses Marine Mobiles RV’ers Expeditions, Missions Emergency and Disaster Communications

The “last mile” is an important concept in Emergency

Communications.

Page 23: Winlink 2000 Radio E-mail Most Popular Uses Marine Mobiles RV’ers Expeditions, Missions Emergency and Disaster Communications

The “last mile” is an important concept in Emergency

Communications.

It is the path across an area where conventional communications have been disrupted or

overloaded by an incident.
