A CATECHESISONTHE FEASTOFTHE PENTECOST

Etymologically, this feasts name iscalled Pentecost which is the Greek

term for fifty or fiftiethday. Thebasis for this name is in the Scripturesof the Old Testament where the Greekspeaking Jews described the Jewishfeast of the weeks as Pentecost(2Mac12:31-32; Tob2:1). In the NewTestament the term Pentecost isfound in Acts 2:1; 20:16; 1 Cor. 16:8.

The Old Testament mentions aJewish feast of Pentecost whosepresent name is Schavuot. It is fromthis Jewish feast that the Christianfeast of Pentecost took its name

although they differ both in theircelebration and content. Originally,in the Old Testament, Pentecost wasan agricultural feast harvestfestival characterized by the offeringof the first fruits in the form of cerealoffering of new grain to Yahweh. Lateron, this feast became the day ofcommemorating the giving of the Lawwith the emphasis on the covenantGod made with Israel. Thus, Pentecost was a day of the renewal of thecovenant.

On the other hand, the ChristianPentecost was explicitly mentioned inthe sacred oral traditions of theChurch, in particular, in theapocryphal Epistle to the Apostle(Epistula Apostolorum) written about160 A.D. The Epistle declared that thefinal coming of Jesus will occur between the Feast of the Pentecostand Easter. Origen in his writingContra Celcius(248 A.D.) listed fourChristians feast days celebratedduring his time, namely; Sunday asthe Lords Day, the Preparation Day,

the Passover and Pentecost.Tertullian, a Christian apologist of the2nd century writes that fasting, aswell, as kneeling during the Sundayservice is unlawful; so too it wasduring the season of Easter andPentecost. Christian tradition andpractices show that the ChristianPentecost was already a feast of greatinterest to the Christians even duringthis time.

As the advent of the end ofthe Roman Empire dawned,

Christian persecution diminished.Consequently, many people have been

converted into Christianity.Candidates for baptism who were not

accommodated during the Easter Vigil were baptized on the day of thePentecost. So, Pentecost turned out to be another baptismal day;consequently, a Vigil and an Octavewas celebrated before and after it. StJerome, in acknowledging thisChristian tradition recommendedthese festivities as fitting to thiscelebration. This later has led PopeLeo the Great (440-461) to admonishsome bishops to baptized candidatesonly during the feast of Easter andPentecost.

In the 4th and 5th centuries, Pentecostdeveloped into the feast of the HolySpirit in commemoration of theoutpouring of the Holy Spirit asrecorded in the Books of the Acts ofthe Apostles. On the onset, it seen inconnection with Easter season butduring the Middle Ages theconnection was lost and it has becomea different entity. This is obviouslymanifested because it has its owncycle: the Sundays after Pentecost.Under the influence of the liturgical

and biblical movements, therelationship of Pentecost to Easter wasrediscovered. The vigil was abolishedin 1956 and in 1970 the Octave wassuppressed. From this time onwardthe feast of the Pentecost is to be seenas the end of the Easter season.

In the first reading is found theaccount of the first Pentecost inJerusalem. The Jews were there tocelebrate their day of thanksgiving toGod for the harvest and thecommemoration of the giving of the

covenant. Many people were in thatplace for it was a day of pilgrimage.Many of the Jews in that place duringthat time witnessed the manifestationof the Holy Spirit. Luke used theimageries of the Old Testament likethe strong driving wind and tonguesof fire resting on each individual. Theeffects of the descend of the HolySpirit were astounding. A band of menwho before were cowering in fearespecially during the passion of Jesusstood up courageously and spoke bravely before the public of theresurrected Christ, particularly Peter

who became the spokesman of thegroup. The most remarkable effectwas the manifestation of the miracleof language where each disciple wasspeaking in his own tongue. In thisevent the story of Babel was reversed.The Holy Spirit repaired the damagecaused by the Tower of Babel incidentand brought unity to the oncedispersed people of God.

Paul, in the Second Reading tells usof his experience of the Spirit in theChurch. He says that the Holy Spiritis the life principle of the Church because only in His power that onecan acknowledge Jesus is Lord. TheHoly Spirit is also the principle ofunity in the Church. He renders thedifferent gifts and talents for thecommon good and the building up ofthe Body of Christ.

The gospel reading that we have is theJohannine version of the Pentecost.

For John, the Spirit was given to thedisciples not on the fiftieth day of theResurrection but on the Resurrectionday itself. This is so because theChurch reminds us that theoutpouring of the Spirit is strictlyrelated to Easter Jesus in hisPaschal Mystery (His sufferings, deathand Resurrection) has gained for usthis greatest of all gifts the HolySpirit. Giving his disciples the HolySpirit, Christ gives them a newministry in the Church the ministry

of reconciliation. The gifts of the HolySpirit are never given for the good ofan individual member alone but areall church-related and for theedification of the Body of Christ.

On this Pentecost day, therefore, wemust ask some very profoundquestions of ourselves and ourcommunity. Questions like: How dowe w itness that Jesus is Lord?Arewe chariots of fire alive and burningwith the flame of the Pentecost? Arewe bold enough in our proclamation

that Jesus is Lord and even bolder in working for justice, peace andforgiveness among individuals andcommunities? Today is the day that we are sent forth to proclaim peaceand forgiveness from the only One who is lasting peace and totalforgiveness. The Spirit comes as aflame to burn away our illusion andliberates us to see the world on fire forChrist and his peace. In a world whichis so in desperate need of the Spirit,let us be about the work of thePentecost.

Ang karon nga Domingo amo ang Piesta sang Pentekostes.Nagatapos subong ang panahon sang Pagkabanhaw 50 kaadlaw pagkatapos sang Misteryo Paskwal. Ang tinaga ngaPentekostes naghalin sa tinaga nga Griego nga kon sayuronika-50 nga adlaw. Pentecost is the great festival that marks thebirth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Ang Piesta sang Pentekostes ginasaulog man bilang kaadlawansang Simbahan, ang banwa sang Dios. Ang Espiritu Santoginahatag gikan sa kahitaasan bilang ginhawa nga ginahalinansang kabuhi para sa kalibutan, sa Simbahan, kag sa bug-os nga

katawohan.Sa subong nga adlaw, ang ginbagamit nga bestidura sang pariamo ang kolor pula simbolo sang burning love for mankind.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE PENTECOST?

There are three mega-festivals commemorated in theChristian calendar. The first two, Christmas and Easter, are wellknown to both believers and non-believers. But its possible thateven liturgical Christians may not be as familiar with the third,the festival of Pentecost. God the Fathers wonderful Christmasgift of His one and only Son, and Christs Easter triumph overthe power of sin, death, and the devil would be of no benefit tous if the Holy Spirit did not give us the gift of saving faith. Throughthe Word and Sacraments, the Holy Spirit gives us the faith tobelieve and trust in Christ as our Savior. This precious gift of

faith in the saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ is the reasonPentecost is the third mega-festival of the church and why wecelebrate it with such joy and thanksgiving.

Sa katapusan:As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday today, let usacknowledge His active role in our lives. As He is our guide andprotector, let us entrust to Him our selves our action and ourdaily activities so that through His guidance and protection, wemay not fall into temptations of this world and choose always tofollow God.
