Every year, slowly but surely, the wine scene shifts an inch or two. Sometimes trends are ongoing, other times mere blips that are soon forgotten about. So with that in mind what has been occurring on our watch and where do we think things are headed?

Firstly on the white wine front, heavily aromatic grapes like Verdejo and Gewurztraminer are increasingly popular, they go so well with spicy food and have real attitude. Conversely delicate Italian dry whites such as Pinot Bianco, Cortese and Malvasia show a subtlety and delicacy that is refreshing and new. Oh, and by the way Chardonnay is back and there are some lovely examples from Chile, France and South Africa coming on stream, please don’t go along with the “ABC” cliché.

Spanish dry Rosado continues to offer great value on the pink front and look out too for our new pink fizzy Raboso from Prosecco makers Di Maria.

Reds - hmm… Italy seems to hit a lot of buttons, the quirky, rustic, edgier wines seem to go well with a lot of food matching options. Barbera from the North and Puglian reds especially stand out in this regard. The new Chilean Pinot Noirs are really great value if you like this fragrant, elegant grape variety.

At the end of the day we all need to experiment a bit more, we all have favourites but there is a whole world of great wines out there and we have some lovely esoteric wines to excite your taste buds.

Newsfrom Nigel

Wine in Cornwall Ltd was established in 2000 by the then incumbent innkeepers at the Trengilly Wartha Inn. Their extensive experience in the hotel sector gave them the perfect base for establishing a supplier within the industry.

Since then Wine in Cornwall has become established as one of the region’s leading independent wine merchants.

It is our aim to offer the best service & choice to our customers. We ship many of our wines directly and enjoy exclusive arrangements with key suppliers at home and abroad.

We avoid supermarket and multiple brands wherever possible and provide quality, individualistic wines at competitive prices.

In 2012, Wine in Cornwall took over the commercial operation of Redruth based, Keltek Brewery which now allows us the opportunity to sell their beers to you in a wide range of formats.

The Summer Tasting is a slightly smaller affair and is held in June. Sometimes we put on other tasting events, for example the South American ‘Steak out’ was a great success showing wines from Argentina, Chile & Brazil, with a gourmet burger van serving delicious burgers and a nice fire to stand around. A great event, plus you got to see us all dressed as gouchos!

Located on south facing slopes almost at the end of the peninsula is award winning Polgoon Vineyard & Orchard. Polgoon is the perfect place to spend an afternoon taking part in a winemaker’s tour, tasting the products or browsing the onsite deli for a range of local produce.

Formerly a Cornish flower farm, Polgoon has been transformed by John & Kim Coulson into a thriving vineyard & orchard creating a range of award winning Cornish wines, ciders & fruit juices.

The very first vintage scooped “best still rosé in the UK” in 2006 & a series of award winning wines and cider vintages has followed. Named Cornwall’s “best drinks producer” in 3 out of the last 4 years Polgoon proudly maintains an artisan approach to its production and is committed to traditional techniques.

Located just off the A30 outside Penzance, Polgoon’s south facing vineyards take full advantage of their unique micro climate. This sheltered side of the West Penwith peninsula ( just under 10 miles from Land’s End), enjoys a superb balance of Cornish sunshine and warm winds from the Atlantic Gulf stream providing the perfect environment for growing grapes and orchard fruit.

AWARDS2013 UK Vineyards Association: 2 medals2013 Taste of the West: 5 medals2012 Great Taste Awards GoldCornwall Life Best Drinks Producer 2008, 2010, 2012, finalist 2011.2013 UK Vineyards Association awards: Madeleine Angevine 2013 Bronze medal, Orion-Pinot Noir-Seyval Blanc Sparkling 2012 Bronze medal, with the Seyval Blanc-Ortega 2013 being high commended

Both the Knightor NV Brut and the Pinot Gris 2011 have just received silver medals in this year’s UKVA national awards. Adrian Derx the owner was particularly pleased about the award for the sparkling wine:

“Our Brut NV really stood out in the results, punching well above its weight, as the judges tend to like only sparkling wines made using the classic Champagne grapes for a traditional more austere style. Our blend of grapes which include Seyval Blanc and Reichensteiner, as well as Pinots and Chardonnay results in a classic dry sparkling wine but with more fruit weight than most champagnes and English sparkling wines. It is all about fun and enjoyment”

The United Kingdom Vineyard Association (UKVA) is the only organisation recognised by the government and the wider community as representing the English and Welsh wine industry. Knightor’s Trevannion was the Montagu Trophy winner for the best presented wine in these awards in 2012.

The Portscatho vineyard, from which the grapes for the sparkling wine come, was late to budburst owing to the very wet ground being so cold. However it is looking good for fruit set later this month.

At the winery we are nearly finished bottling the wines from the 65 ton 2013 vintage. This has seen us innovating with a new style of wine, that we have called Mena Hweg and seeing the return of the popular Trevannion (the sommeliers’ favourite), which we were unable to produce last year because of a very poor 2012 harvest. 2013 was much better for volumes and quality and we would be delighted to organise a tasting of the wines for any of Wine in Cornwall’s customers, either at the winery or we can come to you with a little notice.

At Camel Valley, they’ve been producing award-winning, world-class wines in a beautiful corner of Cornwall since 1989. It’s an idyllic setting on sun-drenched slopes near the famous Camel River. The excellent

grapes perfectly suit the soil and climate. They have a respect for traditional vineyard practices combined with a modern approach to wine making and, most importantly, a passion for creating wines that provide pure pleasure.

As recently as 2014, the Lindos won the trophy for the best sparkling rosé, 2 Gold and 2 Silver medals in the International Wine Challenge. Previously, they’ve won ‘best rosé sparkling wine in the world’ twice at Bollecini del Mundo in Italy.

In addition to these accolades, Sam Lindo, second generation wine maker, has been UK wine maker of the year 3 times.

It is not however, all about sparkling wine, the Camel Valley Bacchus dry white has also won Gold medals, trophies and critical acclaim. So whether it’s sparkling, still, red, white or rose, beat a path to their wonderful sun terrace and enjoy the view. In the words of wine write Matthew Jukes: ‘Camel Valley is ‘Britain’s number one winery’.

Brazil

Virtus Tannat From Brazil’s deep south, well away from the rain forests of the Amazon. The vineyards here are in the hills- the altitude bringing slow ripening and freshness. In this exciting red wine the normally tannic Tannat grape adopts soft plummy fruit with a hint of freshly brewed coffee. Look out too for the poised, beautifully aromaticdry Moscato from the same winery.

St Felix range

These three simple yet wonderfully honest

wines sit just above the base house wine level

but deliver so much more. Made in the Languedoc by the delightful Dardé family they have been staple of our list for many years but remain extraordinary value for money. The

white Sauvignon Blanc is gingered up by a bit of Vermentino, the red is Merlot based but tweaked with green wood Cabernet

Franc and the rosé is a classic dry Mediterranean pink.

Mas d’ Auzieres,Les Eclats 2010 This is exactly the sort of wine that made us go into the wine

trade originally. Irene and Philippe Tolleret run this tiny boutique winery as a bit of a side-line but with such passion. Overlooked by the Pic St Loup the Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache vineyards are littered with big rounded stones as in Chateauneuf du Pape - and the similarities do not end there. This is a beautifully sleek Southern red that will sit well on any restaurant table but will need a little

hand selling to push the customer in the right direction - let

us know and we can help brief staff accordingly to build confidence.

Domaine Pique Roque Provence rosé

Heathery, dry Provence pink wine that has consistently been our bestselling quality rosé for many years. Introduced originally by Falmouth based, local man Anthony Trembath who, in those days, was the winemaker he retains a keen interest

in the wine and our success with it. Provence and rosé are synonymous in the UK and this salmon pink wine is well priced and will sit well on any wine list. Highly Recommended - Decanter Magazine August 2014.

Every bottle of still wine imported for sale in the UK is subject to alcohol duty of £2.05 (it’s even more for fizz). Add to this VAT at 20% of the total (tax on tax!) and just maybe it is starting to look a little iffy as to whether growers, importers and retailers can actually manage to squeeze any grapes in at all - especially when you take into account the cost of production, packaging and transport….and yes a profit margin for all concerned.

So how do we beat this? Easy really, just spend a little more on your wine and you will reap massive benefits in the quality stakes. Because all still wines attract the same duty, the proportion you pay in tax goes down as

you spend more. A bottle of wine priced at £6.50 (retail inc. VAT) is a good starting point and real quality kicks in at £8.00 - £10.00

Farmers who grow wines the world over want to show off how good they can be, unfortunately we in this country like to drive the prices down and quality suffers – no wonder one Aussie winemaker recently made the fishy analogy to me along the lines of “you Poms are a load of bottom feeders!”

How to get a little more love in your wine (and less tax!)

Why not spend a little extraon a bottle…Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor is one of the South West’s most

famous landmarks. Immortalised in Daphne du Maurier’s bestselling novel and once owned by the thriller writer Alistair McLean, Jamaica Inn has well and truly earned its

place in the history books.

The BBC featured the Inn in its 2014 three part adaptation of du Maurier’s famous novel. The BBC adaptation generated a significant increase in bookings and visitor numbers, with one week in April 2014 experiencing a 91% increase in enquiries, compared to the same week in the previous year. The Inn is already fully booked at peak times in 2014 and is experiencing an increase in turnover in all areas. Also, the Inn is now finding that people are booking further in advance, so as to ensure availability. The BBC adaptation has undoubtedly encouraged people to visit the ‘real-life’ Jamaica Inn.

Built in 1750, the Jamaica Inn was predominantly a coaching inn called on by weary travellers using the turnpike between Launceston and Bodmin. It is said that smugglers used the Inn to hide their contraband, and it is estimated that half of the brandy and a quarter of all tea being smuggled into the UK was landed along the Cornish and Devon coasts. In 1788, the Inn was extended to include a coach house, stables and a tack room, creating the L-shaped main

part of the building as it is today. Currently a variety of rooms (including some with four-poster beds) are available, some of which are reputedly haunted.

The Inn is ideal for walking enthusiasts, as it is set on a six-and-a-half acre site on the moor and boasts an abundance of nearby wild and wonderful walks. It is also in close proximity to the renowned Brown Willy, Cornwall’s highest point and offers unlimited opportunities for striking photography.

The Inn offers a wide range of excellent foods throughout the day, from breakfast through to dinner, with lunch and afternoon teas also proving popular with our visitors.

The Wine in Cornwall Team helped Jamaica Inn to compile an interesting and varied wine list that is individual to the Inn and which perfectly complements the Inn’s food offering. Best sellers include Wooloomooloo (Shiraz), Bella Modella (Gargenega Pinot Grigio) and Board Meeting (Chardonnay). The House White, the Italian Terre Allegre Trebbiano is made by an old family firm in Veneto and was formed in du Maurier’s birth year - 1907 (it was actually 1908, but why spoil a good story?!). This delicate and refreshing dry white is a very fitting tribute to the Inn!

Southern Quartet!Faunus Primitivo, Epicuro Aglianico, Masseria Trajone Salice and Copertino The south of Italy really does offer some great value if you buy from the farmer (we do!) and not some amorphous general purpose bottler in the North. These four wines from Puglia and Campania are well established on our list and continue to win us friends all over the country as we seem to be the only people to import them. Characterful and slightly rustic they nevertheless have a rich vein of fruit and a great sense of place. Born for pasta, ripe tomato, fresh herbs and spicy salsiccia.

Boido Our new range of Italian wines are just finding their feet and we will have to see how well they go down as they bed in. Closed under cork (ie not screwcap) and nicely labelled in a traditional way this is a fighting range of wines, very pure and really good value.

‘…a Mediterranean

inspired set of

dishes designed

to delight the

senses and warm

the cockles.’

Open to all, the Terrace Restaurant at Gwel an Mor Resort has a bright, contemporary feel and spectacular ocean views. Enjoy a delicious seasonal menu created

by Spanish-born, classically French-trained Executive Head Chef Joe Lado Devesa - think tapas, sharing platters and sunsets across the sea.

Joe joined Gwel an Mor to head up the Terrace team in late 2013. With previous roles at several exclusive venues, including working with chef Jean-Christophe Novelli at Geddes Restaurant and working as a Head Chef for the Tate Modern in London, he has created a new menu for the Terrace – a Mediterranean-inspired set of dishes designed to delight the senses and warm the cockles.

By day The Terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy a Cornish cream tea or a leisurely lunch at one of the al fresco tables and by night, there’s no better place to enjoy a romantic candle-lit meal for two or a family celebration.

Cornwall and its abundant fresh produce is right on its doorstep, meaning that the ingredients used by Joe and his chefs are as

fresh as fresh can be. The Terrace Restaurant even has the benefit of its very own Cornish herb garden, just a few feet away. In fact, the Terrace specialises in dishes made almost exclusively from local Cornish produce and has an extensive wine and beer list to complement the terrific flavours, supplied of course by Wine in Cornwall.

Joe has worked closely with Mike from Wine in Cornwall to create a completely bespoke wine and beer list for the Terrace, which includes personal recommendations on beverage choices that bring out the best in the delicious dishes.

As Joe says: “We are delighted to be working with Wine in Cornwall. The fabulous selection of wines and beers suit the innovative yet relaxed style of dining that we offer with our tapas and sharing boards. Whether it’s a romantic meal or a family coming back from a day on the beach, they add a fantastic social element to enjoying great food and drink together.’

With an exciting redesign of the restaurant interior planned for late 2014, the Terrace is fast becoming an important part of the Cornish culinary landscape.

Le P’tit RoubieCabernet Sauvignon | GrenacheThe pale pink colour of this wine is a classic style of this part of France and it fits perfectly with the taste of the wine which has a delicate soft edge of strawberry sweetness with hints of sweet pear.

Cabernet Sauvignon | Carignan | MerlotA modern Languedoc blend with Carignan being the indigenous grape variety used here. Three varieties are used to get the correct balance between fruit, tannins and acidity. This light wine with cherry and raspberry flavours and a hint of spice is an ideal accompaniment to a traditional cold meat plate.

Viognier | MuscatThese two grape varieties are widely grown in the Languedoc region. The Muscat adds a raisin or grapey richness, whilst the Viognier brings in more fruit and elegance. A very refreshing, dry wine with enough body to enjoy on its own or with fresh shellfish, salads and light meat dishes.

Our Challenge

In 2011 Wine in Cornwall engaged in a conversation with the Eden Project about their wine offering in the retail and catering outlets. Eden is fundamentally by definition about plants, plant life and their respective global sustainability, therefore our brief was fairly well defined. Within that brief was a raft of different factors which

each had to be addressed. In at least one instance these were contradictory - cork closures were good for the cork oaks of southern Europe but screw cap bottles are lighter thus using less glass and energy in production and transport. European wines are nearer - less food miles you may think but actually it’s pretty marginal because blue water container ships from South America and The Cape are far more fuel efficient than lorries chugging up the autoroute. Is Fairtrade relevant to Eden’s mission? Do we go down the organic route?

After some intensive research we settled on the wines of Le P’tit Roubie owned by the Azan family, one of Southern France’s first organic vineyards who employ a holistic approach throughout the vineyard and winery. We arranged for a member of Olivier and Floriane Azan’s family to spend some time with us and at Eden and in return accompanied some Eden staff on a visit to the Languedoc. This all fostered a greater understanding of the respective projects.

Latterly we have recommended and sourced the wines for the new Mediterranean Restaurant in the Mediterranean Biome - again maintaining and enhancing the basic theme through careful selection of grape varieties and terroir. This range of wines has been selected to reflect both the food offering in the Med Biome Restaurant and the regional aspects of the plants featured in the Med Biome itself.

Their cellars are based in the picturesque village of Champillon, near Epernay. This cuvee is a blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and is aged for at least 18 months prior to disgorgement. The Pinot Meunier gives body and roundness while the Pinot Noir adds rich fruit and a mouth-filling style. A lively mousse, fresh balanced taste and delicacy consistently display the house style.

Tarquins GinMeet Tamara

Tarquin’s Gin is distilled by fire in a tiny copper pot still called Tamara, on the wild Atlantic coast of north Cornwall. Crafted with passion, every bottle is unique –

right down to the handwritten batch character notes on each label.

Gin A contemporary take on a London Dry. A one-shot gin. It is blended with coastal spring water. Infused with handpicked violets and fresh orange zest. Taste: delicious fresh juniper and bright orange blossom.

Pastis A modern take on the French anise. It is distilled with foraged gorse flowers. Blended with coastal spring water. And with no added sugar it is outstanding in cocktails. Taste: herbal aniseed and earthy citrus.
