Executive notes

As Windsor Park does not have a community league president, the executive has agreed to continue on a day-to-day basis. Matters on-going will be seen to or wound up as the executive sees fit. Matters arising will only be seen to if someone from the executive or community steps forward to do the work. New Editor

After almost 10 years, I decided it was time for a change in editorship. I am delighted to say there's an environmental scientist in our midst, and she will be the next editor of the Windsor Park Newsletter. Alexia Lane has been in the neighbourhood for two years now, and has been involved in the community through the Contractor referral service advertised in the Newsletter in recent months. She is keen to become more involved in this community.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the newsletter by submitting articles and suggestions. In particular, I would like to thank my husband John Shaw, who provided proof reading skills and dutifully helped me fold the newsletters.

Please send future contributions to the newsletter to Alexia Lane: [email protected]

Windsor Park Timely Snow Shoveller Award

We have winners for the WPCL Timely Snow

Shoveller Awards for January and February: Carol McCallum has nominated her neighbours David and Rose, who have been clearing sidewalks for several homes; and Robert Ferrari has nominated Korey Cherneski.

To David, Rose and Robert, many thanks --and likewise to all the many others who have done their bit to keep us mobile and upright through an unduly long winter (as it now seems).

We are now accepting registration for the 2014-2015 Kindergarten class for students who will be 5 years old on or before March 1, 2015. If you have an eligible child or know someone in the neighbourhood who does, please be sure to get your registration in as soon as possible. The pre-enrolment deadline for all schools is April 15, 2014. Visit the Edmonton Public Schools website at epsb.ca for further information regarding the pre-enrolment process or call Windsor Park School at 780-433-3924.

Keen to learn about

gardening in Alberta? Want to eat fresh produce grown using organic gardening practices? Interested in helping socioeconomically marginalized women in Africa to make better lives for themselves and their families? Please come and join us at the Green & Gold Community Garden.

This will be the 6th year for the Green & Gold Community Garden, on the U of A’s South Campus. The garden is a collaborative project of the School of Public Health and Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. It is run by volunteers. All of the proceeds from donations for garden produce are sent to the Tubahumurize Association for women in Rwanda.

We’re always looking for more help at the garden. You don’t need to be affiliated with the university – most garden volunteers are from the neighbouring communities and we range in age from teenagers to seniors. You don’t need to be an experienced gardener either - both novice and experienced gardeners are welcome. If you don’t like gardening, but would still like to help in other ways (promoting the garden, donating seeds or garden tools) please contact us at: E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 780-492-9079 Web site: http://bit.ly/greenandgold_garden

Or, if you don’t want to garden, but would like to receive the garden e-mails this summer (to let you know what produce is available during the garden market hours that week ) please sign up to our garden listserv.

Infill Development in Older Neighbourhoods

Evolving Infill is a project being done by the City, in collaboration with citizens and stakeholders, to advance residential infill. It is both a conversation and project designed to embrace and harness change.

Over the next 30 years we expect over 500,000 new residents to call Edmonton home. Supporting new housing in established neighbourhoods is a key element of finding homes for a growing population.

General Contractor Referral Service

Are you tired of paying double the rate for renovations just because you live in the university area? I live in the Windsor Park area, and I have carefully selected contractors based on their quality of work and tendency to charge fair prices for the work done, not the area I live in.

In response to the exorbitant prices being paid by many neighbours, I have formed a general contractor referral service. You let me know what your renovation needs are, and I put you in touch with a selected group of contractors who provide high quality work for less. You do not pay anything for this referral service. They will contact you, and the rest is between you and the contractor. Email Alexia Lane at [email protected]

Bicycle Helmet Safety Bicycle crashes are the leading cause of brain

injury in school-aged children. Most injuries occur when a cyclist suffers a fall, strikes a stationary object, or collides with another cyclist, or pedestrian. Remember – it’s the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet (and highly recommended for all ages). Helmets should be CSA approved and worn during recreational activities such as skateboarding, in-line skating, or cycling. Getting Started • Allow children to assist when buying their helmet.

Cyclists who choose their own helmet are more likely to wear them;

• Start the habit early. Young children learning to ride tricycles need to wear helmets;

• Parents must lead by example: always wear your own helmet when cycling.

Getting the right fit • Take the time to properly fit and adjust your

helmet to ensure maximum protection in case of a crash;

• When worn properly, helmets should fit level, not tilted up, or down over the forehead;

• Helmets should feel snug, but not too tight. To test the fit, the helmet should not fall off when you shake your head from side-to-side while the straps are unfastened;

• Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly forward from the ears;

• Only one finger should be able to fit under the chin strap when it is fastened;

• Do not forget to use the sizing pads included with the helmet. They will help improve the overall fit and comfort

Coyotes Why are Coyotes Living in the City?

Coyotes have long existed in the City of Edmonton but most stay in green spaces in the river valley. As our city grows and expands into their habitat, more coytoes are adapting to food sources in residential areas eating readily available backyard food sources such as garbage, fruit and pet food. For excellent information: http://www.edmonton.ca/for_residents/pest_management/Coyotes.aspx

WPCL Fundraising Casino this September! The WPCL casino is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday September 2nd and 3rd. It is not the best timing as those are the first two days of school. However, this is the main way we fund our operations and build and maintain our facilities. We had quite a bit saved up and used it all, and more, to redevelop our park lands: new playgrounds, shelter, picnic benches (plaques on the way, sorry for the delay), walking trail, landscaping and plantings. There is more yet to be done what with the hall requiring a new roof and the exterior walls refinishing. The first thing we need is a casino coordinator to head things up: organise volunteers (12 signed up already!) and to make sure things run smoothly on the day. Second, we need more volunteers! I know it seems like a long way away but July and August are difficult times to find people as everyone’s gone on holidays so the sooner the better for signing up. Arbor Day in Edmonton May 9

The City of Edmonton Arbor Day tradition began in the early 1950’s. The City distributed evergreen seedlings to all grade 1 students in Edmonton. The Province of Alberta soon stepped up to provide seedlings for every grade 1 student in the province.

The Forestry section of the City of Edmonton took it one step further by creating a 'tree-rific' day of learning and fun for grade 1's.

Edmonton’s Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the Friday prior to May 10.

Did you know? Each year over 15,000 children receive seedlings.

Root for Trees

Edmonton needs more trees! We want you to help us plant more trees to double the size of our urban forest.

Root for Trees is an enhanced tree planting initiative which intends to increase tree planting within the city through continued partnerships with corporations, individual residents and community groups. The annual target of this initiative is to plant an additional 16,000 trees annually on public and private land.

Whether you participate as a family or individual, school, community group, or business, you can make a difference. Celebrate trees at our special events, and participate in our tree planting initiatives.

Although some ornamental trees are planted through our volunteer program, planting native species (naturalization) is a large focus of Root for Trees.

For more information: http://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/initiatives_innovation/root-for-trees.aspx UWALK

UWALK is developed by the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation, and funded by the Government of Alberta. UWALK aims to help Albertans find their stride and support them moving forward. You can find your stride through any form of physical activity and track your activity minutes or steps on the website. River Valley Clean Up Be a Volunteer!

Volunteer registration is now open for the 2014 River Valley Clean Up initiatives. The kickoff event will be on Sunday May 4, 2014. Please register online: http://app.volunteer2.com/Public/Organization/d30c88d0-61f4-45c9-a5ee-d8d84b9faa91/2 About River Valley Clean Up

Since 1987, thousands of city residents have scoured Edmonton’s parks system as well as the shoreline of the North Saskatchewan River to pick up litter.

At the 2013 kickoff event, 267 volunteers picked up more than 200 bags of litter around Louise McKinney Riverfront Park. Another 350 people from neighbourhood communities around Mill Creek Ravine gathered to collect garbage along that waterway. In the first week alone, residents picked up 155 cubic metres of litter - enough to fill up seven of our largest garbage trucks.

Throughout the summer and into the fall, volunteers continued to pick up litter along our river valley and throughout the connecting ravines. We are grateful for their passion and dedication in keeping our river valley clean.
