Sixth Form Open Evening

We held our annual Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday, 1 November. It was great to see a packed hall and so many Year 11 students and their parents and carers finding out about the subjects we offer in the Sixth Form. With the collaboration of the two upper schools at Sixth Form level, our students have greater choice of subjects. Students and parents and carers are encouraged to speak with subject teachers at Year 11 Subject Evening next week to discuss suitability for Key Stage Five courses. Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back to term two; we hope you had a good break over half term. We are delighted to have been appointed Co-Headteachers and we are looking forward to continuing to work with students and their families at Windsor Girls’. Between us we have worked across both upper schools and have wide experience of the Windsor school system. We will continue to work closely with Mrs Labrum in her new capacity as full-time CEO of Windsor Learning Partnership, as the school and the Trust develop and further strengthen. At the end of last term we were pleased to attend the Autumn Concert, which included a wide range of performers and pieces. As always, the standard was high and it was great to see large numbers of our students taking part and supporting their peers. Rehearsals for the joint production of ‘Kiss Me Kate’ are in full swing and tickets will be on sale this weekend. You are advised to purchase your tickets quickly as our shows are always very popular and regularly sell out. Our performers are also busy preparing for Christmas performances at Windsor Castle and at our annual Carol Concert at the Garrison Church in Windsor. This week, students have been preparing poppies for the 100

th anniversary of the end of World War

One. Students will be learning more about the centenary in assemblies next week, and the poppies they have produced have made a wonderful display on the House noticeboard. We will also be marking Parliament Week, the week beginning 12 November, and there will be further focus on the centenary of the Representation of the People Act and women achieving the vote. It was good to see so many Year 11s and their parents at our Sixth Form Open Evening. The evening marks the beginning of the options process and allows students to think about what they want to study in Years 12 and 13. The collaboration between Windsor Girls’ and Boys’ at Key Stage 5 brings greater choice and flexibility for our students and we are excited to support them through this process. For anyone who was unable to attend the evening, information is available from the school office and also on the school website. There will be further opportunity to ask questions on Thursday, at Year 11 Subject Evening, which runs from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Next week, Year 13 will be sitting formal examinations across all of their subjects. Students will be able to use this experience to gain an insight into the real examinations and also to highlight areas in which they need to focus and perhaps revisit. As always, when students are sitting examinations in school, we ask that other students are understanding and look out for signs near the examination rooms. We hope you have a good weekend Mr P. Griffiths and Mrs E. O’Carroll

Year Information

Year 9 We are planning our annual Enjoy and Achieve event for Summer 2019 and would like to gain some feedback on the type of enrichment activities students and parents/carers would most value. Our annual Enjoy and Achieve Week is one of the highlights for Year 9 students. It has been a success for a number of years and is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate and learn key skills and to develop relationships with their peers. This year, we would like some input into the type of events our Year 9 students are most interested in. We understand that our students experience a wealth of development opportunities outside of school and are keen to ensure all students gain the best possible experience. Therefore, we are asking you to complete a questionnaire by using the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/XPLM87R Year 10 Teachers are currently entering data for year 10 students. This data will be coming home shortly. Year 11 There will be a Duke of Edinburgh presentation evening on 31 January 2019, to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the participants. Students will be sharing information about their expeditions and the other aspects of their award. Students interested in completing their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award need to bring in their payment and application forms by Friday, 9 November. Year 11 Subject Evening is Thursday, 8 November, and students have been issued with appointment sheets to book appointments with their teachers. If anyone was unable to attend the Sixth Form Open Evening, there will be an opportunity to find out more with a smaller assembly next week. Students will be issued with the information, prospectus and application form. There will also be further taster sessions which will allow students to gain a further insight into Key Stage Five courses.

Uniform checks have been taking place this week and will continue into next week. There will be a particular focus on skirt length. In addition, students are reminded to remove outdoor clothing once inside the building and if students are wearing scarves to school they should be white, green or black only. Tickets for ‘Kiss Me Kate’ will be on sale in the next week.

SIXTH FORM Year 13 assessments take place next week. Year 12 Physics students will be taking part in a trip called ‘Physics in Action’ in London on Thursday, 8 November. A group of Year 12 and 13 students will be attending a trip to Warner Brother’s Studios on Monday, 5 November. Year 12 are reminded to secure their work experience placements as soon as possible for the week beginning 8 July 2019. Congratulations to students who have submitted their UCAS applications. We are delighted to report that students have received a huge number of offers and the majority of applications have now been sent off. Students looking to secure an apprenticeship are reminded that many of the most competitive opportunities are now open for applications. Local, large corporations will have rigorous selection processes which begin now and students should be submitting their applications.

Autumn Concert

The Autumn Concert was a wonderful evening full of a wide range of performances. Students in the choir and various bands and ensembles entertained a packed hall and, as always, the standard was extremely high.

Interact

History A Level Revision

The Interact 2018-2019 cohort gathered on Wednesday, 17 October, to elect their chosen representatives for the next academic year. It was a very, very close race with, on occasion, only one vote between candidates. Mrs Peck will email once a date has been set for the first members and Board of Directors meeting.

Friends of Windsor Girls’ School Windsor Girls’ School is proud to announce that we have launched The Friends of Windsor Girls’ School, a parents’ and carers’ group aimed at creating a sense of community, hosting fun activities, and doing a bit of fundraising for the little extras for the school. The Friends of Windsor Girls' are looking for donations of any Windsor Girls' School uniform or PE kits that may no longer be of use to you. Donations can be dropped to the Main Office. If you would like to join the parents’ group please e-mail La Dawn Clare-Panton for more information: [email protected]. The next meeting will be held at Windsor Girls' School on Monday, 21 January, at 7:00pm.
