TOP 20 JOBS IN DEMAND

JANUARY - MARCH 2014

The WIN region’s top in-demand occupations have been relatively unchanged for over a year running, but the occupations shift in order depending on the point in the business cycle. Software developers - applications, registered nurses, retail salespersons, and heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers are the top in-demand positions once again. This quarter demand for software developers outpaces all other jobs with 5,090 online ads. Demand for truck drivers dropped from 4,123 postings in Q4 2014 to 3,158 postings in Q1 2015, moving it from 1st to 3rd place. Postings for registered nurses, a consistently high poster, increased from 2,713 in Q4 2014 to 3,707 in Q1 2015 marking a new high for the occupation.

EMPLOYMENT AND LABOR FORCE

2014 was a time of limited expansion in employment and nearly no change in the labor force. The annual average employment in the region in 2014 was 2,262,136 individuals with an available labor force of 2,560,075. Employment peaked in December 2014 at 2,292,966 individuals, a positive trend of growth is continuing. Q1 levels tend to drop relative to Q4 peaks as holiday employment fades and WIN projects that early 2015 data, once released, will follow that trend.

While employment is inching upward the labor force is at stand-still with minimal change since 2012. Unless employers start hiring more workers in droves, it is unlikely that labor force participation will increase much in the near future.

The WIN region’s unemployment rate was an average 8.0% during 2014, a 1.5 percentage point drop from 2013’s average rate of 9.5%. As employment has grown faster than the labor force, the drop in unemployment is due entirely to job gains.

EMPLOYER DEMAND

Total job postings in the region reached new highs this quarter with 106,476 online ads posted by local employers. Postings have remained high relative to previous years after an initial spike in Q3 2013. That spike turned out to be the start of a new trend of higher posting levels with Q1 2015 as the new peak. Postings tend to fall from Q1 to Q2 and that may occur in the coming quarter. While postings are likely to drop in the coming quarter, they are expected to remain high as employers continue to increase employment levels.

Every cluster in the region, analyzed by WIN, experienced gains this quarter with all clusters adding more than 1,000 postings or more to Q4 2014 levels. IT added the most postings and grew the most (6,279 additional job ads, 45% growth over Q4 2014). 100% of the growth in online job ads can be explained by the five clusters analyzed by WIN.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURINGSKILLED TRADES AND TECHNICIANS WIN’s technicians/skilled trades category

includes jobs related to advanced manufacturing. Southeast Michigan has more

demand for skilled- trades labor, such as CNC machinists and welders, than almost

anywhere else in the country. In 2014, skilled trades employment reached 104,229

individuals in the WIN region. NOTE: Skilled trades related to construction and repair

are not included in this cluster, as the focus is on advanced manufacturing.

The most postings in the skilled trade and technician cluster during Q1 2015 were for first-line supervisors of production & operating workers, with 533 postings. This occupation has retained its top position since Q2 2014 and grew in demand from 414 postings in Q4 2014. Employer postings for this occupation signal a need for management in the skilled trades. CNC machinists are the second most in-demand skilled trade job the region with 480 postings, a significant jump from 249 postings in Q4 2014 (and growth from 4th to 2nd place).

Like total postings in the WIN region, skilled trades and technician postings have increased since last quarter. Adding 1,085 postings, levels between Q4 2014 and Q1 2015 increased 40.3%. Growth is also up 12.7% since Q1 2014, one year ago. While this quarter’s number are not the highest recorded, the increase bodes well for workers looking to the skilled trades for their next job.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

The WIN region has a competitive edge in the skilled trades with nearly every top in-demand job at a higher concentration of workers than the rest of the nation. CNC machinists have a location quotient (LQ) of 1.92 meaning that the concentration of these workers in Southeast Michigan is 92% higher than the rest of the U.S. on average.

Skilled trade jobs also allow workers to earn a living wage with the median hourly rate above $15 for nearly every in-demand job. Starting wages (10th percentile) are not as competitive for every job, but all positions offer upward wage growth.

Many skilled trade jobs do not require a degree but instead a special certification and on-the-job training. Technician positions require an associate’s degree in engineering. While there are grads in the area with related training to the top skilled trade jobs, they are not enough to fill all open positions as employers continue to increase worker demand.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURINGENGINEERS AND DESIGNERS Jobs in the manufacturing industry can range from

assembly and production, to skilled trades and technicians, designers and engineers,

and even computer-related occupations such as software development. This section

focuses on engineers & designers, which represent 74,198 employed individuals in

Southeast Michigan. Demand for engineers in the region has been consistent, and

employment has been growing quickly.

Mechanical engineers once again top the list in this cluster, with 1,815 postings up from 1,173 postings in Q4 2014. Postings for this occupation remain high every quarter. Other top in-demand jobs include electrical engineers (1,477 postings up from 929 in Q4 2014 and consistently the second most posted job), and commercial & industrial designers (903 postings nearly double 478 postings from Q4 2014). Demand for engineers and designs is up for nearly every occupation in the cluster.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

Engineering and design demand follows the region with a large increase in postings this quarter. After over a year of slow decline (since the peak of 7,177 postings in Q3 2013), postings are at an all-time high in the region with 8,237 job ads posted by area employers. The fall from 6,102 in Q3 2014 to 5,578 in Q4 marks the third straight quarter of decline in demand for this occupational cluster. High posting levels are a signal that employers need more workers in these jobs. 7.7% of total postings in the WIN region are in engineering and design.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

The WIN region has a strong presence of engineers and designers with some of the highest concentrations of these workers in the nation. The top job, mechanical engineers, with a location quotient of 5.97, has a 497% concentration of these workers in the WIN region than in the rest of the U.S. on average.

Other notable occupations in this cluster are commercial & industrial designers with a location quotient of 4.62, meaning that there is a 362% higher concentration of these workers in the region than in the rest of the U.S., on average.

Wages for engineers and designers are extremely competitive. Starting wages (10th percentile) are above $20 per hour for nearly every top job in the cluster. The high wages follow a need for higher education. For all but one of the top jobs, a Bachelor’s degree is required for entry into the field.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Information technology jobs include occupations that are associated with entry level, technical, and professional careers related to the design, development, support and management of hardware, software, multimedia, and systems integration services. While the information technology cluster does not currently meet the employment levels of the other clusters, it is quickly growing. In 2014, IT occupational employment was 74,309 in the WIN region. Top jobs in this cluster include computer support specialists, computer systems analysts, and software developers for applications.

IT jobs are up this quarter with growth in nearly every top jobs. Not surprisingly, the top job in the IT cluster is once again software developers for applications with 5,090 postings. This is more than double the 2,480 postings from Q4 2014. This occupation has been at the top of IT postings for several years and outpaces demand for other IT jobs by 3:1. Strong posting behavior for this occupation and other top jobs such as computer systems analysts (1,679 postings up from 1,348 in Q4 2014) and business intelligence analysts (1,323 postings up from 625 postings in Q4 2014) signal growing demand from employers. Considering the past posting behavior for these occupations and the direction of the regional economy, these trends are expected to continue.

ONLINE JOB POSTINGS OVER TIME

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

IT postings have grown considerably this quarter and growing from 10,626 postings in Q4 2014 to 16,905 postings in Q1 2015. While the current quarter’s levels are not as high as those seen in Q2 2014 (the highest levels recorded with 22,291 postings), the jump to nearly 17,000 is significant. IT postings have hovered around 11,000 since data has been recorded and the current jump up might mean new and sustained levels of employer demand in the future.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

While employer demand for IT workers is strong, the concentration of these workers is still nascent. Many IT occupations in the region have a location quotient higher than “1” (the national average), but none of these occupations has the extreme presence exhibited by the trades and engineering, occupations that have been mainstays of the regional economy for a longer period of time. IT occupations are growing in the importance to the economy as more workers are recruited into this new and growing field.

Following high demand, IT occupations offer extremely competitive wages. Starting rates for IT workers are close to $25 per hour for many top occupations with median rates near $40 per hour. Wages have followed demand and high pay will likely drive more workers into this field in the coming years.

The number of individuals receiving degrees in IT-related fields is also on the rise. Computer engineering, software development, and other fields that often require a Bachelor’s degree are attracting more students each year that will add to the IT workforce employers desperately need.

HEALTH CAREWIN’s health care occupation cluster includes jobs related to health care support and practitioners. This cluster is one of Southeast Michigan’s largest with, 243,782 employees in 2014. Employment in this cluster has been consistently growing, more health care workers needed to care for Michigan’s aging population and in response to regulatory and other changes. Registered nurses are routinely the most in-demand job in this cluster.

Like many other clusters, the top job is consistent from quarter to quarter. Postings for registered nurses once again top the list, with 3,707 postings up from 2,713 in Q4 2014. This occupation has been the cluster’s top-demanded job for several years running. Demand for registered nurses is extremely high, especially for those with specialties such as surgery, anesthesia, or labor and delivery. Other top postings in the region include those for nursing assistants (860 postings up from 609 in Q4 2014) and medical assistants (636 postings up from 488 in Q4 2014.

Postings for health care workers have increased this quarter to an all-time high with 12,408 job ads posted by employers. This quarter continues nearly a full year of growth up from 8,815 in Q3 to 9,953 in Q4 2014. After several quarters of decline and some slow growth early in 2014 (likely due to mergers within the health system), postings have recovered and health care employers are hiring. Health care occupation online postings represent 11.7% of all online job ads in the region, up from 10.7% in Q4 2014.

HEALTH CARE

Health care is a sector that grows in concentration and demand as the local population increases and ages (demanding more services) and as universities and hospitals diversify and increase their reputation for destination care. Both of these are occurring in Michigan with demand for health services increase (as the population ages) and as universities and other hospitals become places of choice for others seeking care from outside the region.

The higher concentration of health care workers is evident in their location quotients. While no health occupation reaches the competitive levels of engineering and skilled trades in Southeast Michigan, the concentration of physicians, medical assistants, laboratory workers, and others is higher than the national average. Medical assistants, for example have a location quotient of 1.5 meaning the concentration of those workers is 50% higher in the WIN region than in the nation, on average.

Many health care jobs are a pathway into the middle-class and others, those that require graduate-level training, boast very high salaries. Many workers see the high wage potential are enrolling in health programs, however, there is still a shortage of many health care workers as evidenced by high posting levels and employment growth.

RETAIL AND HOSPITALITYThe retail and hospitality cluster is the largest occupational cluster that WIN analyzes, both in terms of employment and online job postings. This cluster is of very high importance to the region because it is the first to grow when the economy expands and the first to contract in a downturn: It is often a leading indicator. As defined by WIN, the retail and hospitality cluster encompasses all customer service occupations, with skills transferrable across the retail sector, the hotel industry, food and beverage service industry, call centers, and other areas. In 2014, 632,825 individuals were employment in retail and hospitality related occupations in the region.

While retail & hospitality postings increase overall, postings for the most in-demand job, retail salespersons, dropped this quarter. Falling from 2,713 postings in Q4 2014 to 2,569 in Q1 2015 this modest drop might be a sign that employers have reached a standard level of posting to maintain their desired number of workers. The next most in-demand job, close behind retail sales, if sales representative for wholesale and manufacturing (non-technical/non-scientific products) with 2,560 postings. This is a considerable increase from 1,957 postings in Q4 2014.

Retail and hospitality posting followed the trend in the region and grew this quarter. But postings did not grow as much as other clusters. Retail & hospitality postings fell steadily from the Q3 2013 peak of 26,139 to a 2014 low in Q4 of 18,382. Postings remain higher than levels from 2011 and 2012, but the overall trend is uncertain.

RETAIL AND HOSPITALITY

Like other service, health care being one, demand for retail & hospitality occupations increase as the population grows and has more money to spend in the economy. Wages in the region have not been growing rapidly but compared to the recession low, wages are up. This is one explanation for the location quotients for many retail and customer service position being larger than 1, the national average. Sales representative for wholesale and manufacturing (non-technical/non-scientific products) has the highest location quotient in the region at 1.3, meaning that there is a 30% higher concentration of these workers in Southeast Michigan than the U.S. on average.

Retail & hospitality jobs are not often sought after due to high wages. But these jobs are often the first step for workers into the labor force where they can learn valuable skills that translate to other occupations that earn a higher wage.

Most retail & hospital jobs do not require higher education but many require specialized on-the-job training.

UNDERSTANDING CLUSTERS• Rather than focusing on talent demand within industries (types of firms), WIN

generally emphasizes exploring talent demand based on occupations, includingthe skills, educational credentials, and experience needed to work in them.

• WIN research examines industry data, as the health of companies can beuseful for economic development purposes. However, shifting focus fromindustry to occupation is important as different types of occupations withextremely different skillsets may work within and across industries. Forexample, accountants, computer specialists, and engineers all may work in themanufacturing industry.

• By clustering occupations, the talent system can identify employer demandfor particular skillsets across multiple industry types and develop a responsethrough training and pipeline development to meet that demand.
