Williams Primary School provides, in a caring environment, opportunities for all students to become independent and self managing learners who are able to acquire skills, knowledge and values and to develop creativity to their full potential.

The school has wonderful students who value their school, cherish their friends, respect their community and who generally love to learn. The students participate with enthusiasm and vigour. The school is well-supported by parents and the wider community and the teachers are determined to work in partnership with families to get the best out of each and every student. Williams Primary school expects high standards of academic and social achievement.

Williams Primary School currently runs four class groups. We utilise experienced teachers for Literacy and Numeracy support, run a highly regarded Science programme and offer French, Music and Instrumental Music that is taught by staff from the School of Instrumental Music. The Arts are highly valued at our school with an Art specialist teaching Visual Arts across the school, fabulous end-of-year concert productions, Music Assemblies and Circus Skills (for which we are well-equipped). Staff members are encouraged and supported to take on leadership roles and to build on their professional skills and knowledge. The school is spacious with bright rooms that open onto verandas, a well resourced, automated library and classrooms that are networked with Broadband access. A new library is currently under construction. The school grounds are spacious, well-presented and cater for a wide range of sporting and physical activity.

Early Childhood staff are well-qualified, with a well-equipped centre inside and out, and like the rest of the school it is delightfully landscaped.

Education- Primary SchoolWilliams Primary School encourages, welcomes and values parent and community involvement. The Parents & Citizens are very active in fundraising and in supporting school events and the School Council provides thoughtful input to support the school’s decision-making processes. The students, staff and the wider community are proud of this school.

Meets at the school on the first Tuesday of the month during school terms.

An active parent and community body providing additional financial support for the school.

Recent projects have included playground equipment, upper body strengthening equipment, shade sails, quadrangle redevelopment, garden enhancements, literacy support, camp subsidies and bus subsidies for excursions.

Narrogin Senior High School

In 1955, the Narrogin Agricultural Senior High School was opened; operating a ‘town’ campus and a ‘farm’ campus. In 1981 the campuses were separated into independent institutions. Since then, Narrogin Senior High School has grown; now catering for approximately 680 students. It is a genuine comprehensive senior high school which prepares students for university, Technical And Further Education and employment.

Its upper school offers academically demanding courses such as Economics, Physics and Calculus, vocationally oriented courses such as Business and Office Administration, Accounting and Furniture Cert 1 (VET), culturally focused courses such as Music, History and Art and technologically rich courses such as Technical Graphics (VET), Information Technology and Media.

Typically students enrol as twelve year olds into year 8. There is however a significant intake of fifteen year old students into year 11, with many students choosing to live at the Narrogin Residential College.

Narrogin Residential College

Narrogin Residential College is one of Western Australia’s largest co-educational secondary boarding colleges that can cater for up to 220 boarders. Boarding is provided for students attending Narrogin Senior High School and for students (u18yrs) attending C Y O’Connor TAFE. Students can also board with the college up to year 10 with an intention to transfer to Narrogin Agricultural College for year 11 and 12.

The College primarily services parents residing in the Wheatbelt and Upper Great Southern region of WA. However, students from other areas of the state choose to board at the College. The College provides excellent care and supervision of its students and a full range of sporting and recreational activities. In addition to this students are supported with their academic and pastoral care needs. All this is provided by a dedicated team of full-time Boarding Supervisors.

School Bus Services operate outside the townsite to bring school children to the primary school in Williams and on to the high school in Narrogin.

Williams Volunteer Fire & Rescue undertake a range of responsibilities, including: • combating fires • containing hazardous material spills • rescues - mostly involving road crashes • fire safety education

Through their training, volunteer firefighters learn to operate the wide range of equipment, vehicles and appliances used in fire suppression operations, including charged hose lines, portable pumps, tankers and communications.

Williams Art & CraftCentre

Williams has an active Art & Craft Committee (see contacts in Community Groups).

The committee hosts a number of art and craft related workshops throughout the year, which are all advertised in The Williams.

Williams Repertory Club (theatre arts)

This club has a wide reputation for staging magnificent productions, both plays and musical theatre, annually for the community and beyond. The club stages a show presented over 4/5 nights in around August/September each year.

Services to the region include Next G mobile phone coverage. In town, a number of service provider handsets work, however out of town, this is limited to Telstra. As new towers are installed, the service coverage does appear to be improving

Access to local call internet connections are available through several internet service providers.

Satellite and ADSL services are all provided to various locations throughout the Shire, and dependent on arrangements with different service providers.

Williams Licensed Post office, located on the corner of Albany Highway and Brooking Street, provides a wide range of mail services, including stationery and gift lines.

Dog Impoundments:

Dog owners have an obligation to keep their dogs under control at all times. Dogs wandering at large present a nuisance and a danger to the public. The Shire carries out dog patrols and responds to complaints. The Dog Act provides heavy penalties for owners whose dogs are impounded. Drivers, Motor Vehicle, Boat and Firearm Renewals:

Drivers licenses, vehicle licenses, boat licenses and firearm licenses may all be renewed at the Shire Office. Licensing staff are also able to assist with registration of new vehicles, motor vehicle transfers and ordering of personalised number plates between 8am and 4pm.

Health and Building Information:

The Environmental Health Officer incorporating Health, Building and Town Planning can be contacted at the Shire Office for any matters concerning Health and Building. The Environmental Health Officer is employed in a joint scheme with the Shires of Wagin and West Arthur. Williams’ allocated day is Friday and alternate Wednesdays, however the EHO is available in special circumstances through arrangement with the Chief Executive Officer.

Private Works:

The Shire’s range of modern plant and equipment, operated by trained staff, is available for private works hire. Current hire rates for graders, loaders, trucks, backhoe and other plant are available at the Shire Office.

Mosquito Control:

To assist in controlling mosquitos the following preventative measures should be taken:-• Ensure that all educt vents to plumbing installations

are fitted with a mosquito proof cowl.• Remove all rubbish, which may hold water from

around the yard eg. old drums, tyres and disused containers.

• Ensure that all water tanks have properly fitted lids and treat water with paraffin oil or kerosene in sufficient quantity to provide a film of oil across the surface.

• Council staff fogs the Williams Townsite on regular occasions when conditions are right and adult mosquitos are active. To receive an SMS advising you of upcoming fogging, ph the Shire office with your mobile number.

Refuse Disposal Site:

Situated off Narrogin-Williams Road 2.5km east of town. Refuse site is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-3pm, when the site has a manager in attendance.

Rubbish Removals:

Williams town rubbish removals are carried out every Tuesday by Avon Waste (green “wheelie” bin). Kerbside recycling collections are carried out on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (yellow lid / green “wheelie” bin). Bins are encouraged to be put out the night before.

Public Library:

The Library is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5:00pm. The Library is situated in the Community Resource Centre, Brooking Street, Williams. Books may be returned during office hours.

Sports Pavilion:

Situated at the Williams sports ground. Bookings may be made through the Shire Office. This facility accommodates a variety of sports including basketball, tennis, netball, football, hockey, cricket, and inter-school sports. The grassed oval is equipped with lighting. The centre also provides a venue for cabarets, discos, weddings, general meetings and a variety of social gatherings.

Town Hall and RSL Hall:

Situated on the corner of Brooking Street and Growse Street. Bookings may be made through the Shire Office. Trestles, chairs, cutlery and crockery are available for hire from this facility. The Hall is also used for concerts, theatre and music evenings.

Aquatic Centre:

Telephone No. (08) 9885 1096. Situated at the entrance to the Recreation Ground, Pinjarra/ Williams Road. Open for general public use from approximately November to April when the Manager is in attendance.

Season and family tickets are available and may be purchased from the Shire Office.

Tourist Information Bay:

Situated at the Lions Park near the bridge on Albany Highway. Information on the board includes Shire and town site maps.

Aged Persons’ Facilities:

Situated on New Street and Growse Street, Williams. (Lions Units) 4 x 1 bedroom units and (Wandoo Cottages) 2 x 2 bedroom units are available for accredited senior citizens.

Single Persons’ Units:

Situated in Growse Street, Williams. Sandalwood Court houses 4 x 2 bedroom units for single persons.

Chemical Container Compound:

Situated inside the Refuse Site compound in which approved chemical containers may be deposited during normal tip hours (Wed, Sat, Sun, 9-3). All chemical containers must be thoroughly washed and drained before leaving at the compound.

Oil Recycling Depot:

Situated near the entrance to the Works Depot compound in which used oil may be placed for collection and recycling.

Recycling Depot:

Collection sites for aluminium cans, newspapers and glass containers are situated near the entrance to the Works Depot and at the Refuse Disposal Site. Additional recycling facilities including Cardboard collections are located at the Refuse site. Kerbside recycling is also available in town.

Recycling Shed:

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Recycled, good condition, second hand goods are available to purchase at a small price. All funds raised are used for community purposes.

Jesse Martin Museum

This unique collection of memorabilia from the Williams district (and others) has been compiled by passionate local farmer, Jesse Martin. The project began in 1976, with the building of a replica inn, complete with original fittings and has grown to encompass a general store and other replica buildings, farm machinery and an extensive collection of various paraphernalia. Located on 4ha of the family farm, this private collection is available for viewing by appointment only, a donation to cancer research is asked as entry fee.

Dryandra Woodland is located approximately 25kms north of Williams. This 22,000 hectare forest is well known for its bird and animal life including woylies, numbats, wallabies, kangaroos and possums and for its varied plants and trees. In spring the forest abounds in wild flowers. Accommodation is available.

Williams Heritage Trail

The Heritage trail was developed by the Williams Historical Society, Williams District High School and Williams Shire Council. The trail explores early areas of settlement and has two sections - a 1km walk around the townsite and a 35km scenic drive to Quindanning. A brochure is available.

The Shearer’s Yarn at the Williams Woolshed

The “Shearer’s Yarn” located at the Williams Woolshed is an innovative museum presenting the story of Wool in Western Australia. The Shearer’s Yarn combines sheep shearing, entertainment, historical displays, education and retail wool products.

Things to See & Dowilliams

Lions Park

Located on the banks of the Williams River the park provides a pleasant place for a barbecue or picnic for locals and travellers. Includes a playground, toilets, a nature walk along the river and a pleasant weir to have a picnic next to. An information shelter gives a map of the region for travellers.

Cycleways

For a relaxing walk or cycle, the cycleway begins at the Shell Roadhouse and runs along the river, and thoughout town, linking the residential, commercial and recreation precincts.

Williams Nature Reserve

The Williams Nature Reserve is located 10km north west of the Williams townsite. It is set aside for the conservation of flora and fauna and has long been visited by locals and wildflower enthusiasts. Following development of the site it now provides visitors with suitable access and day-use facilities such as parking, information, a lookout and picnic table. Turn off the Albany Highway into McKenzie Road (approx 5km north of Williams), which is well signposted. It is hoped that a longer walktrail will be established at the site in the near future.

Old Pioneers Cemetery

North of Williams, the cemetery has graves dated back as early as 1830. Many ticket-of-leave men are buried here.

Wildflowers

Although wildflowers can be seen all year round, the biggest displays are in the spring.

The Library is a great place to visit for a wealth of information and entertainment. We have a great selection of books, videos, DVDs, CD ROMs, cassettes/CDs. What we don’t have we can get for you.

The Library has a selection of fiction and non-fiction; Books (including Large Print), Biographies, Videos / DVDs, Talking Books (cassettes and CDs), Electronic Resources.All items have a loan period of three (3) weeks.A maximum of 8 books and 3 videos per member is allowed.A magazine and paper-back book exchange is also available. We ask for items of suitable content, in good condition and magazines no more than 12 months old.

If we don’t have what you’re looking for we can order it for you. As part of the State Library network we have access to all of the available library resources in the State. This includes project material, music scores, foreign language material or the latest releases from your favorite author.

Who Can Borrow?

Any Williams resident is welcome to join the Library.Children under the age of 13 must have the signed permission of their parent / guardian before joining the Library. It is preferable that these children are accompanied by an adult when using the Library. Parents are responsible for any lost or damaged items borrowed by their children.

Libraries for Kids

The benefits of introducing books to children from a young age cannot be overstated. The library has plenty to offer young readers including Storytime sessions, holiday reading programs and more.

A Better Beginning for babies with books is a family literacy program aimed at encouraging parents to share books and stories with their babies and young children. The Library has books and information on how to share books with your child.
