Design inspired by the speaking mouth. To emaphasize it, adapted the mouth of “Donald duck”.The shape of profile looks his mouth

The extruded shape of the mouth reminded me of the beak of Donald Duck. Colors of this form divided into two colors similar to the head of Donald Duck
Role of a phone is speaking
Speaking mouth became a metaphor of this design

The angled design of the front of the two-color body blends harmorniously with the curved shape of the sides. The design is simple and functional

The most challenging process of this project was the “Drop Test.”Due to the pyramid forms on the front, it could not pass any drop tests. We needed to reevaluate.
Failed.Gained weight.
Failed.
Not as clear as glass.Could not make an injection mold as sharp as edges of dia-mond cut.
asked to re-design and refor-mulate to meet the engenerr-ing standardsdeemed not acceptable.
We decided to keep investigating highly skilled mold injection companies. With the help of LG Japan, we found out SINKO, would be the best mold injection company. They made samples with the data provided. The sample were strong enough to pass the drop test this time around. The edges of the new samples were as sharp and clean as the cuts of diamond. In addition, it was crystal clear. We met all objectives.

Gestural Interaction of In-Vehicle Tasks:Audio & Climate Controls
Role: an author of the MFA thesis
Second year graduate study
Clustered small buttons require driver’s cognitive and visual load. In 2004, GM issued a public statement which suggests that driver distraction contributes to 25% of crashes. For this reason, require new intercation of automobile
Given recognition by HFES (Human Factors & Ergonomics Society) at its annual meeting in San Francisco Sept 2010 and published

One side is climate control and another is audio controlLess depth of layer of control
based gesture recognitionCan be attached on the steering wheel.
As spontaneous as our daily language
Hard to control analogue adjustments like intensity of radio volume.
based gesture recognition Requires distance to recognize a driver’s gesture and confused by a passenger’s gesture
Twist & pressure recognitionRequire s visual load to find a small pressure point
Users prefer gesture command over voice for simple, repeated and accustom commands

NEW INTERACTION“EYES ON THE ROAD AND HANDS ON THE WHEEL”
This is research for studying thumb gestural interaction for secondary in-vehicle tasks: audio
controls and climate controls. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

2. Please in your age.
10’s_____ 20’s _____ 30’s_____ 40’s_____ 50’s _____ 60’s_____ Over 70’s_____
3. Do you have driver’s license? Yes / No
4. How often do you drive?
a) Everyday b) Several times a week c) Few times a year
5-a. If you could control the directional blinkers with your voice, would you say, “Blinker left
or blinker right” for blinker controls or just use the conventional control behind the steering
wheel while driving? Conventional control ______ Voice control ______
5-b. If you could control the wipers with your voice, would you say , “wipers, faster wipers
and the fastest wipers” for wiper controls or just use the conventional control behind the
steering wheel while driving? Conventional control ______ Voice control ______
Climate control and Audio control will be separated by right and left side like the picture.
6. Which side would be better for audio control? R / L
Please imagine and perform the thumb gesture which you think could be the in-put for the
following functions.
* You can imagine icons and operations of audio and climate controls in you car before start
this. Please do not share gestures between `Volume up, down and radio control,’ `Volume
up, down and Mp3 player’ and among climate controls.
If you have any question, ask William.

First research materialTwo Touch Pads- Angle: 80˚, radial abduction angle of the thumb- Length of two sides: 2.5”, big women’s average thumb size
Dots on touch pads to help trackmovements of the thumb. There was a misconception that the dots signified other kinds of functional buttons.
Replaced touch pads withplain white fabric due to the reason above.
Created big touch pads to inestigate whether the small touch pads prevented human subject’s free thumb gestures. This led to human subject error because they thought the big surfaces had spatial meanings.

New interaction by adding flowers to and subtracting flowers from this vase.Metaphorical design.

Off On Off
Beginning concept:
When putting a phone into a charger, then its display is on and when taking out a phone from the charger, then its display is off.Adopted this type of interaction to a lighting project. The shape of a shade from my floor light reminded me of flowers.

The fragrance of light......
