WildlifeVaasaFestival:holdingback10yearsDearFriends&Colleagues Ten years ago and while preparing the establishment of Terranova Nature Centre at the Ostrobothnian museum, an idea was born to arrange an event, which could help the newly established Terranova to gain publicity both in Finland and internationally. After developing this idea with several people for several months, we finally managed to receive preparation funding to make the idea reality. After all these efforts, Wildlife Vaasa Festival concept came to life, which was developed in cooperation with Wildlife Europe festival, a prestigious nature film festival in Sundsvall, Sweden.. Wildlife Europe festival wassetupandsupportedbymostoftheScandinaviantelevisionchannelsand it was managed by mr. Sven Jansson who worked also as our consultant during the early years and with whom we agreedtoalterthefestivalhosting, oneyearinSundsvallandthesecondyearinVaasa; Thus,WildlifeVaasabecamea biennialfestival.Asaresultofourcooperation, thefirstWildlifeVaasafestivalwassuccessfullyorganizedinVaasaat theendofNovember2002,hosting79filmsfrom12countries.However,thingsdidntgoasplaned,becausein2003, Wildlife Europe festival changed its name to Living Europe and moved away from Sundsvall to Helsingborg to organizethereaverybigfestival,backinSeptember2003.andthatfestivalwasitslasteditionbeforerestingin2004. WildlifeVaasaFestivalwascertainlyaffectedbyallthesechangesandafterloosingitspartner, butontheotherhand, itbecametheonlyactivefestivalofitskindinwholeScandinavia.ItmanagedtostayaliveinVaasaandtofinallymove on with its second edition in November 2004, after receiving significant funding and support from the Nordic Cultural Fund, Vaasa City and many other cultural institutions from the Ostrobothnian region, the Finnish State and various foundationsandsponsorsfromaroundFinland.WildlifeVaasafestival2004wassuccessfullyimplementedhosting88 filmsfrom18countriesandwith30delegatesattending,includingrepresentativesfromGreenpeace. Successful implementation in 2004, gave us good reputation and generated further support for the festival in 2005, with the City of Vaasa preparing to celebrate its 400 years anniversary and The Kvarken Archipelago been nominated to become Finlands first Unescos World Heritage natural site. The combination of those two significant events in 2006,createdanopportunitytodevelopourfestivaltoamuchhigherlevelwithWildlifeVaasa2006hosting213films from38countriesand60delegatesfrom13countriesinattendance.Twoyearslaterin2008,thefestivalhitsanother record participation with 265 films from 49 countries and 78 delegates from 15 countries in attendance, launching also a new media education project, a new regional film centre and a new online nature film database out of our film archives. Last time in 2010, the festival broadened its network and cooperation areas worldwide hosting 212 filmsfrom47countrieswith107delegatespresentfrom17countries,includingaChinesedelegationfromBeijingand the City of Ya'an and the ambassadors of the Netherlands and Croatia. Last year in 2011, among other significant events, the festival launched another project aiming to develop cultural tourism packages in our region, in co operation with Korsholm Music festival. This new project initiative, during the last two years, obtained significant financialsupportfrombytheFinnishMinistryofEducationandCultureinordertoimplementitsobjectives. Andfinallythisyear,wearehostinganotherrecordof283filmsfrom45countries,includingthecontributionsfrom 6partnerfestivalsfromaroundtheworld.Theseare: 1. So,herecomes ourBook ofEntries2012 (part1) which contains only the films submitted in the International Nature FilmCompetition,whileanotheredition(part2)willincludethedataofthosefilmswhichparticipateinChildrenand Youth Film competition together with our festival contributions. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude and thank all participant film makers for their contributions, the cultural diversity and the high quality of their programs whichtheyvesubmittedthisyear.Suchparticipationmakesusalwaysfeelveryhappyandveryproudindeed! Fjord

Since 2005, the Nryfjord has been listed as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. The Nryfjord and Geirangerfjord areas are considered to be among the most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet. Their outstanding natural beauty is derived from their narrow and steep-sided crystalline rock walls that rise up to 1400 m direct from the Norwegian Sea and extend 500 m below sea level. Along the sheer walls of the fjords are numerous waterfalls while free-flowing rivers rise up through deciduous and coniferous forest to glacial lakes, glaciers and rugged mountains. There is a great range of supporting natural phenomena, both terrestrial and marine such as submarine moraines and marine mammals. The film FJORD is a personal interpretation of this unique landscape. The film has no dialogue. The Storyteller

7 year old Nirmala attempts to grapple with the demons of her grandfathers dementia when he forgets the details of her favorite story. Nirmala confidently takes up her grandfathers role of storyteller, by putting on his glasses, in the hope that by telling the story correctly, she can get rid of the demons that riddle her grandfathers version. Based on a myth about how the coconut got its face from Southern India, this film delves into different landscapes of their two unique imaginations, exploring how age and time can change human experience and morph familiar stories, lives and even relationships.

Kerala, the southernmost state in India is unique in many ways. Kerala is noted for population growth rate that is less than the national average, low infant mortality, death rate matching any of the advanced nations, high literacy and gender ratio. Rising tourism also shows some promise for Kerala. Yet, Kerala remains a food-insecure state. There are more than 3.6 million families in Kerala below poverty line, earning less than equivalent to one US Dollar a day. Globalization, liberalization, urbanization, population growth, rising price of fuel, climate change all these contributed to upsetting world food security. In Kerala, too, the reasons are no other. The key message of the film is the food production is dwindling all over the world and so is the range of variety in food making it hard to get for the poor... The Kvarken Archipelago is low-lying and rocky and comprises low moraine ridges, massive boulders and a mosaic of shallow inlets, flads and gloe lakes. The High Coast was declared a Unescos World Heritage Site in the year 2000 and later on in 2006 the site was extended to include also Kvarken Archipelago. The Site got such status because it presents an outstanding example of major stages in the Earths history including significant ongoing geological processes and geomorphic features. Wildlife Vaasa 2012 From Pain to Paradise

Ref: 49

Country: Finland Language: English narration Length: 16 Completion date: 2011 Synopsis This short film deals with two stories about two bears with their fates in contrast...The film starts at Bifeng-xia Panda Base near the city of Yaan in South west China, the home of the Giant Pandas and one of Unescos world heritage sites. There, for a resident panda bear, life is one of comparative ease with about 40 different bamboo species available for them to eat and with their diet often supplemented with fruit and specially-prepared dietary supplements. It is a stress-free existence and a life of comparative luxury. But sadly, life for the black Asiatic bear, the so called Moon bear (Ursus thibetanus) is a completely different story. In countries across Asia including China, thousands of these bears live a life of torture on bear farms in order for their bile to be extracted. The bile is used in traditional medicine to cure various illnesses ranging from headaches to hemorrhoids. Lisa Yang, Animal Asia Foundations welfare officer at the Moon Bear rescue centre in Chengdu, tells us their story...
