At the time of the examination the gelding was about to spell, having raced the day prior at Warwick Farm Racecourse, Warwick Farm, NSW. Post-race he was given no anti-inflammatory therapy. Clinical Examination: The horse was presented in good clinical health. On clinical examination the horse has acceptable conformation and temperament. Auscultation of the heart and lungs did not reveal any abnormalities. The horse was examined at the walk and trot in hand, with no lameness detected. Palpation and manipulation of the distal limbs did not reveal any signs of significant injury or abnormal wear. Flexion tests of all four limbs were all normal, with no pain or lameness detected post flexion test. The following findings were noted, which are not considered clinically significant: Small medial proximal splints on the inside of both forelimb cannons, old and inactive. Small superficial graze to the left fore outside heel and outside of the back of the left fore fetlock. These occurred from an over-reach during the race, and will heal uneventfully. Endoscopic Examination: An endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tract was conducted at rest via both nostrils. The horse had previously had a “tie-back” procedure performed (prosthetic laryngoplasty) in January 2020, with the result being a good stable tie back with an ~70-80% opening of the airway. There were no other structural or functional abnormalities of the larynx, epiglottis, soft palate, or pharynx detected, and a clean trachea. (Freeze frame of resting endoscopic below left) Dynamic Respiratory Endoscopic Examination: An Dynamic Respiratory Scope (DRS) was performed on the 29 th December 2020, with the horse exercised at the gallop over 1000m, quickening the last 400m. There was a good stable “tie-back”, with the left arytenoid held open ~80%. There was very mild flutter of the right vocal cord, and slight billowing of the soft palate, which are not considered a clinically significant finding in this horse. No abnormal respiratory noise was noted during exercise. (Freeze frame of scope at gallop below right)
