SeptemberA September song is in my headAnd so before I go to bedI’ll look out at the evening skyAnd watch the silent birds go by

As off they fly to a distant shoreAll gathering together once more,Safe journey is my September refrainUntil they all come home again.

Old WillinghamFor many years peopledrew their water from thevillage pump on the Green. But in 1912 the WillinghamWater and General SupplyCompany was establishedwith money from wealthylocal families. This hugewater tower, built onStation Road, was filled bywater pumped twice a dayfrom a well below. There isstill a row of terracedhouses opposite the farmshop sometimes called‘Tower Cottages’ and the

tower was located behind this. Initially, the water wasdelivered to stand pipes in the street and only later plumbedinto houses. At 60 feet the tower’s tank provided goodpressure locally but eventually, as the number of peopleusing the water increased and the original pipes corroded, the pressure could be very low on the far side of the village. As the supply system became modernised throughelectrical pumping, the tower was no longer needed and wasdemolished in the 1950s. Reputedly, the bricks were takenaway by a farmer from Bluntisham to build a bungalow, loadby load behind his tractor.See more photos at www.oldwillingham.com.If you have stories or memories about this picture, pleasecontact Jon Edney, 31 High Street [email protected].

Children’s Front PageCompetition

Once again we would like the children to design the frontpage of the December issue. Entries are invited fromchildren aged between 7 and 11 years old, entries should besubmitted on A4 paper, not be computer generated; it’smore effective if the page is filled with colour and withouttoo much white space. Remember to put your name, ageand contact details on the reverse side. Imagine, if your entry is the winning picture it will be onthe front page of nearly 2000 magazines and will go toevery household in the village!Christmas may be over two months away but you need tohand your entry into the school office or at the library.

Closing date is Monday 2 November.

Brownies Travel the World atWillingham School

On Sunday 5 July the Primary School was the venue for aGirl Guiding event for Brownies from all over the countytitled ‘Brownie Airport Day’. This is a regular event heldwithin the county at different venues. It involves Brownies(girls aged 7-10 years) experiencing different cultures andactivities. On arrival they checked in with their lunch boxesas luggage. Once they had received their boarding passesthey continued on to passport control to receive theirpassports and get them stamped. They boarded the 'plane'inside the school hall and found their seats. After the usualsafety demonstrations the girls took a short flight beforedisembarking to take part in various activities in differentcountries. They learnt about jewellery in Africa and madesome beads from elder branches, in Switzerland they learntabout travelling opportunities within Guiding and thencrossed over to Italy to make a Venetian mask. They madeMexican God’s Eyes and Indian sweets and decoratedSwedish biscuits. They also learnt the Dutch Shoe Gameand then reboarded the plane to sing some Australian songson the way home. By the end of the day they had earnedthree badges – World Guiding, World Cultures and theCounty Airport Day badge.Unfortunately, although the event was held in

Willingham, there were no girls from the village inattendance as there is not currently a Brownie Unit inWillingham. This is due to a lack of leaders. If you areinterested in helping to restart Brownies in Willingham, please contact the Guide leaders [email protected].

Willingham Guides Go Wild inthe Woods

In June three Willingham Guides and two of their leadersjoined over 30 other Guides at a regional survival camp inNewmarket. After a normal night at camp the girls awokethe next day to be told that a tsunami had hit the North Seaand our camp, being on high ground, was one of the fewplaces not under flood water. The only food was what wehad brought with us and the water supply wascontaminated.

Over theweekend the girlswere taught theskills to survive. On the first daythey learnt fourdifferent ways tolight fires withoutusing matches andhow to use saws

and knives as they had to work in patrols to cook all theirown meals on open wood fires. They were also taught anumber of ways to purify water to make it safe for drinkingand simple first aid should an accident happen. Using theirnewly learnt knife skills they made whistles out of lime treesticks to be able to call to each other. Then, during the day, they were told that acid rain haddestroyed all the tents. So before they could go to bed thatnight they had to build shelters and they strung uphammocks in the woods where they, and the leaders, spentthe night. The next day they followed trails using compasses, geocaching and orienteering which lead them via an

archery range. At the archery they had to shoot at targets togain food for their lunch. The girls then baked their ownbread (bannocks) to have with their burgers, all done onopen wood fires. All too soon we were told that we had been rescued andthat it was time to go home but not before the Guides hadcompleted their Outdoor Cooks badge and their Survivalbadges.Willingham Guides is open to all girls aged 10-14 yearsold. PASTORAL LETTERIt is with much excitement that I await the start of the Rugby WorldCup at the end of the month. I’m expecting lots of close matches, some great tries and a magnificent England victory at the end. However, it would be surprising if this final expectation isn’t sharedwith everyone so I expect plenty of banter along the way, which ispart of the fun.

Sport can be a mirror of life, with positive images like a greatvictory, an electrifying match, physical excellence, the unexpectedstar that emerges; but there are negative images too, like losing amatch, injury, cheating, arguments. We can question much aboutlife as we observe the drama of a sporting moment.

One of the things about rugby that I like is that it is a true teamsport with different roles for players of all sorts of shapes, sizes andexpertise. Whether it is the strong solid person in the front row ofthe scrum, the amazingly tall but athletic person in the line out, thequick thinking scrum half or the speedy sprinters on the wing, eachone has a part to play. Without any one of the roles the team loseseffectiveness as can be seen when a player gets sent off and the powerbalance of the game changes.

A team working effectively can be described as a body with eachplayer representing a different part of it. The team needs eachplayer and fails if one is missing, not playing their part or eventrying to play somebody else’s part. Can you imagine the effect onyour body if your foot decided it was a hand? Or if an arm wentmissing? This description is used for the church, for the apostle Pauldescribes the church as a body, with each person representing adifferent part. Each one dependent on the others and each one ofvalue. We are all different with different skills, different experience, different lives. But as we put that variety together to show God’slove to the world we are massively effective and can transform theworld we live in. You each have much value and a uniquecontribution to make to the world we live in.

If you think about it, this says that whoever you are, whateveryou are like there is a place for you within the Christian church.Jesus didn’t come that we may all be the same. He wasn’t lookingfor identical people, he came to bring life in all it’s abundance. That’s why I love the church, there is such a variety of people witha common purpose. And each person has great value.

Enjoy the Rugby World Cup and when there isn’t a match on,maybe it is worth spending time considering how God can use you.You are unique and have a valuable part to play in making thisworld a better place.

Grace and peace,

Rev Paul JoelBaptist Church

Hempsals Community Farm is a community growingscheme where committed members bring together a varietyof skills and ideas to share in both the risks and benefits ofthe harvest. Our membersreceive fresh food from a known source, benefit from fewer‘food miles’, less packaging and ecologically sensitivefarming with improved animal welfare and are able toparticipate in all aspects of food production without havingto take on sole responsibility for such a wide range ofproduce. Surplus produce such as pork, christmas geese andturkeys and honey, is also sold to ‘Friends of the Farm’.On 5 September we will be holding our annual Open Day.This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in gettinginvolved with small holder farming, to have a look roundthe farm and chat to the members about what’s involved. Wehave a wide range of members from complete novices toothers who have some farming/gardening experience butall bring enthusiasm and a ‘can do attitude’ which has meantwe have done everything from growing vegetables andmilking goats to building a club house!

Willingham community has pulled together to help fundthe largest single village playground development in theregion. At a time when spending cuts dominate theheadlines, Willingham bucks the trend with phase one ofthe £150,000 new playground project completed andofficially opened on 12 July. The opening event was well attended by villagers of allages and the comments about the new playground havebeen overwhelmingly positive. It is fabulous to see theplayground being so well used, with groups of parents andchildren now heading there on a daily basis. Commentsfrom the Facebook page www.facebook.com/QEIIfieldinclude ‘So much better than it used to be’, ‘Now I can't getmy kids away from it’ and ‘Thanks for new playground, welove it’.The project was led by 5 local mums from the WillinghamAction Group (WAG) together with the Parish CouncilChairman, Andrew Cook, and Lead Councillor for Leisureand Amenities Jamie Smith, along with Councillor RayCroucher. In an area where funding has previously been known to bescarce, the group worked tirelessly to secure localdevelopment funds, and called upon generous localbusinesses/contributors to ensure the project, initiallyplanned as far back as 2009, could be realised. The project team succeeded in securing significantinvestment from both the AmeyCespa and WRENcommunity funds, to match against the Council’s Section106 funds. But WAG and the Parish Council have done more thanjust applied for various streams of independent externalfunding, they’ve also turned to the local people themselves, with sponsorship coming from a number of nearbycompanies. We would like to thank all our sponsors, listedon the right, without their input the project would not havebeen possible. The final phase of the QEII vision is yet to be completedto create an area for over 13s. However, WAG and ParishCouncil are hopeful of securing further funding to makethis happen. To find out more about the project or to help by makinga donation go to www.localgiving.com/willinghamactiongroup

WILLINGHAM NEWS September 2015 19

Street LightingCambridgeshire County Council is planning to change theoperational times for most of the street lights it owns andoperates within the village. Central government fundingreductions require financial savings in its annual lightingbill. It is proposing that from 1 April 2016 many street lightson residential roads and footpaths, which are not located onour main traffic routes, will be switched off betweenmidnight and 6 am. In addition all the remaining villagestreet lights, wherever located, will be dimmed from theevening until 6 am. The Parish Council has also beeninvited to contribute to the costs of street lighting. ChurchStreet has 15 lights and it is proposed that two will remaindimmed throughout the night whilst the remaining 13 willbe used for only part of the night. The Parish Council, whilst recognising the need to make savings, would like tounderstand the logic behind choosing which lamps are to beswitched off and which are to be dimmed. If you want toknow the impact of this proposal on your street then pleasecheck out: www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/streetlighting. Theconsultation period ends on the 30 September. If you makeany comments on the County Council website please alsolet the Parish Clerk know your views.

Controlling TrafficThe Parish Council originally proposed the extension ofthe current 30 mph speed limit along Station Road as partof the 2014-2015 Local Highway Improvement Scheme. There now appears to be a reluctant acceptance by theCounty Council that, subject to receiving positive commentfrom the police, the current limit could be extended toWestfield. The Parish Council hope this will beimplemented during the Autumn. The 2015-2016competition for Local Highway Improvements is about tocommence and the Parish Council will be consideringfurther low cost traffic control options for the village.

The Annual AuditThe Parish Council has received the results of its annualaudit. These were overwhelmingly positive in giving theParish Council’s financial and administrative procedures a‘clean bill of health’. Some very minor adjustments wererecommended which have been adopted by the Council.

Looking ForwardThe October Feast Week will soon be here! Look out for theprogramme! The Parish Council is already receivingbooking requests for Ploughman Hall so if you represent avillage group and want to book the Hall please do so as soonas possible to avoid disappointment. Before then there is the Medal Presentation on 15 September for the Library’s Summer ReadingChallenge. The Parish Council looks forward to taking partin this.

Willingham Glebe LandThe Parish Council has been approached by Ely Dioceseconcerning the development of its glebe land in the village. This site is possibly the last in the village which might allowa substantial number of dwellings, possibly 50, to be built.Representatives of the Diocese planned, at short notice, apublic consultation meeting at the Ploughman Hall in theevening of the 19 August.
