Phil and Edna Tomlinson celebrate 70 years of marriageIt is with great pleasure that I submit this announcement onbehalf of Phil and Edna as 70 years of marriage is afantastic achievement. It is especially meaningful to me asthey were married two days after I was born and sinceknowing Phil and Edna we have always shared a celebrationdrink.Phil and Edna met through service in the RAF and

WAAF and theirs was a war-time marriage on 5 July 1944,

initially involving separation on account of active service.Willingham has been their home for more than 42 yearsafter living in Suffolk and Yorkshire. Phil retired in 1986 asSupervising Driving Test Examiner and has since enjoyedhis dominoes and a pint.Reading the article, which appeared in the Cambridge News

on 5 July 2004 Edna was quoted as saying ‘We’ve been verylucky – things have gone very well, and we have three sonsand six grandchildren’. That now reads…‘and twelve greatgrandchildren’, a new generation in the past 10 years.A final thought from Phil: After 42 years in the village he

is beginning to feel accepted as a local and is veryappreciative of all the friends he has made and all thesupport he and Edna receive. Phil has pledged a generousdonation to the Community Orchard and wishes to marktheir 70th wedding anniversary by sponsoring a fruit tree.

WILLINGHAM WOLVES UNDER16s CHAMPIONS AGAIN!

Willingham Wolves U16s had yet another successful year. After winning the League last year without losing a game,we lost our first game at the start of the season but this lossmade the boys more determined and went on to win thenext 20 games. Not only did we win the League with 2games to go, we also won the Knock-out Cup, beatingChesterton Villas 4-0 in the Final at Cambridge Stadiumand made the Final of the Hillsborough Cup only to losethis game on penalties! So congratulations to the boys fordoing the double (and so very nearly the treble).

See page 8. The last collection was a great success andraised several hundred pounds that went to WAG inrecognition of the excellent community work they do.

Long Lane Closure

We have been notified of the closure of parts of LongLane to through traffic between 7 and 13 of August. Wehope to be able to provide more details next month.Currently a search of the County Council’s websiteprovides no useful information.

Elections

We have a new County Councillor, Peter Hudson, and anold friend re-elected to the District Council, Pippa Corney, who has done much in the past to support Willingham. Most Parish Councillors were automatically re-elected.Appointment of officers took place at the June meeting anddetails are included in the list below. Not a lot of changebut a big welcome to Steve Mellows as Lead Councillor forthe Cemetery and to Joanne Vincent-Pilsworth who hasrejoined the Council after previous service on it some yearsago. Her experience will be of great value. There is still onevacancy for which you can be co-opted. It is not an onerousjob and you can make a valuable contribution to your localcommunity. It would be good to have more female andyounger representation.

Police Update

We are fortunate in having on the Council a senior retiredPolice Officer who keeps the Council well informed. Therehave been problems recently including public orderoffences, burglaries, criminal damage and fly grazing ofhorses. Please do everything you can to keep yourself safeby locking windows and doors and reporting any suspiciousincidents to the police on 101 or 0800 555 111. If you havean internet connection you can get regular updates oncrimes in our area by signing up to Ecops atwww.cambs.police.uk/ecops/. Another useful contact is ourPCSO Kerrie Harding on 07736 086924.

Cemetery

The warm wet weather has encouraged the grass to growand made it impossible to arrange for mowing only on drydays. Every effort is made by our contractor to keep thecemetery neat and tidy but in damp weather some grasscuttings do stick to the headstones. We are sorry, but askparishioners to make any complaints they have to the ParishCouncil and not to the contractors who are simply doingthe job asked of them.

The cap badgeof the soldier suggests he is from the Suffolk Yeomanry – aswere several village men. We don’t know who they are butit’s possibly the Ellwood family and the soldier is JamesEllwood aged 24. If so the story is a sad one as the followingwas listed in the news for August 1917: ‘The parents ofJames Ellwood…have now received intimation that theirson was killed in action on April 23rd last. WILLINGHAM POPPY COLLECTION

OUR POPPY COLLECTION NEEDS YOU!REMEMBRANCE WOULD NOT BE THE SAMEWITHOUT POPPIES AND WE NEED YOU TOHELP PLEASE…For many years Mrs Few of Church Street organised

the Royal British Legion Poppy Collection, and each yearraised nearly £2000. Now she is no longer able and theLegion urgently needs someone to take it on.The task is not onerous. It involves, in early November,

distributing the poppies and collecting boxes to thevarious shops and local businesses. Secondly, arranging asfar as possible, for volunteers to make a house to housecollections around the village. Finally, of course, afterRemembrance Day, collecting the boxes and counting themoney. If a couple of friends took this on, it would be apleasant, satisfying and worthwhile task for them. Youwill receive positive support at every stage. With the wounded from Iraq and Afghanistan still

needing constant help, the need to support the RoyalBritish Legion has never been greater.

Thank you!As I’m sure most of you will have heard, our son Tristanwas diagnosed in February 2014 with Non-Hodgkin’sLymphoma. Tristan has been free from treatment now forsix months and we would like to take this opportunity to saythank you.Firstly we would like to thank family, friends and the

community for helping us raise a massive £8,583.31. Thismoney has been divided between the following charities:Lymphoma Association, Cancer Research, Clic Sargent,Addenbrookes Hospital Ward C2 and the Play Team, LiamFairhurst Foundation, Cyclists Fighting Cancer, CallumPite Smile Charity, Brendan Oakes Trust and Lucy’s Day’sOut. We have been honoured to have personally handedover many of the cheques with only distance preventing usfrom the rest.Secondly, we wish to thank a small group of people with

very big hearts who, with the support of many people inour local community, decided to raise money to send us, asa family, on holiday. We have now put this money towardsour holiday and very much look forward to our break laterin the year.Thirdly, thank you to Fran and Barry at The Duke of

Wellington pub, for holding a charity evening and donatingall proceeds directly to Lymphoma Association inrecognition of Tristan’s diagnosis.Lastly, we thank each and every one of you who gave

support, kind words and prayers. Our journey is far from over and our future is still

uncertain but we continue to feel blessed.Love fromThe Lenk Family xIf you could possibly help in any way, please telephoneDavid Rooney 01954 261259

Engage in the AfternoonCome and join in with these special sessions for adults onthe first Wednesday of each month from 2 to 3 30 pm.There are speakers, tea/coffee/biscuits and a chance tochange books. In June Graham Clare, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue

Service champion, gave a really interesting talk on firesafety in the home. Everyone learned something new and hewas a very entertaining speaker. These talks are free but donations are welcomed towards

refreshments.

Future Talks:• Wednesday, 2 July – Tea Tasting with Sarah Ormiston.Come and learn about tea with a few cuppas to sample!

• Wednesday, 6 August – Summer Reads! An informaldiscussion about summer books – recommendations fornew books and reminiscences about old ones

Tuesday Story Time for Under 5sUpcoming Story Times will be on: Tuesdays 1 July and 15 July, 2 – 2 30. After the summer break we will beginagain on Tuesday 16 September.Story Times are on the first and third Tuesdays of the

month during term-time. Parents/Carers must accompanychildren. Please support this fun and free activity.

Children’s Summer Reading ChallengeGet ready for this year’s challenge – the Mythical Maze! The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year

during the summer holidays. You can sign up at WillinghamLibrary from 19 July onwards, read six books of yourchoice collecting stickers and activity sheets along the way– all free. All children who complete the challenge will beawarded a medal and a certificate at a special ceremony atthe library on Tuesday 16 September after school.

Friends of Willingham LibraryThe Friends of Willingham Library AGM was held on 13 May. Sadly only committee members attended. Thesame Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer as for theprevious year were elected unopposed. The committee’srole is to keep a high profile of the Library in the village, and we are assured that when the future plans for librariesare considered, the existence of a Friends Group is adefinite plus point. However, with just the same few activemembers it is unlikely to flourish. This may soon be put tothe test. We have seen Willingham Library through one

closure crisis, but in the financial year 2015/16 once againthe County Council needs to make large savings, some ofwhich must come from the Library Service, and it is likelythat Willingham’s position as a small library will be veryprecarious.

Cryptic crossword solvingOn a lighter note, the latest event organised by the Friendsof Willingham Library was a session in May on solvingcryptic crosswords for beginners, given by Librarysupervisor Wendy Law, who in her spare time compilesQuiptic on-line crosswords for the Guardian. Having gonethrough the different types of clues and how they areconstructed, Wendy then gave the group a crossword tosolve to put into practice their newly acquired skills, thoughher explanations of the answers were definitely needed.Still, at least some of us are determined to persevere …

Dear Editor,It is so very sad that someone or some people decided toremove ‘Vote UKIP’ boards before the election in May.They were on private property, erected by the owners withtheir permission and thus such acts are really criminaloffences. Thank goodness we live in a democratic societywhere we have proper elections and complete free choicewithin them. It is wrong that some people feel they canoverturn this right. Unlike most other political parties wewelcome anybody to our branch meetings, because plainlyand simply we have nothing to hide.Yours sincerelyMartin Hale, Branch Chairman - UKIP Cambridge &South East Cambs.

Dear Willingham NewsEveryone was relieved to hear that the young lad who wentmissing last month, was found alive and well. However, as aresident on Balland Field, I’d like to praise the efforts of thepolice who knocked on every door on the estate andelsewhere in the village to trace him.Name and address supplied

14 WILLINGHAM NEWS July 2014

The Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow

from the 23 July until the 3 August and athletes from

around the globe will compete to win medals, break

records and do their personal best. To compete in their

particular sport all athletes must go into strict training

spending many hours, even years, in preparation for the

main event. They have to be dedicated, focussed and self-

disciplined if they are to be successful, always keeping

their eye firmly fixed on the prize.

The ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia in Greece

took place between 776 BC and 393 AD and included

combat and chariot racing as well as foot races. The

apostle Paul would have been aware of the discipline and

training required to compete in the ancient games of his

time and alludes to them in his letters. For example, in

his first letter to the church in Corinth where the

Isthmian games were held he writes, ‘Everyone who

competes in the games goes into strict training. They do

it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a

crown that will last forever’ (1 Corinthians 9:25 NIV).

A perishable wreath was the prize for the ancient

games competitors and Olympians. In contrast the

participant in the Christian life can look forward to a

crown of life that will last forever! In Paul’s letter to the

church in Philippi, he urges the Christian to ‘press on

towards the goal.’ This is what he says, ‘But one thing I

do: Forgetting what is behind and straining towards

what is ahead, I press on towards the goal to win the

prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ

Jesus’ (Philippians 3:13-14 NIV).

If we are to live the Christian life and grow in our faith

then we too must be dedicated and focussed as we try to

keep our eyes firmly fixed on the prize that lies ahead.

This life requires strict spiritual training too and we have

the apparatus to help us accomplish this such as Bible

study, prayer and Christian fellowship at our local

churches who are always ready to warmly welcome you.

If you enjoy watching the games this summer and

marvel at the dedication and skill of the athletes taking

part why not think about your own life journey and the

ultimate goal you are aiming for. We may never win a

medal competing in Commonwealth or Olympic games

but there is a much greater prize on offer to us all.

Pastoral Letter LOOKING BACKTrouble at The Duke

In recent years the village pub has become an endangeredspecies. Despite campaigners raising objections andpetitions, many have closed, been bulldozed and housesconstructed on the site. However. Looking Back to 1974,the Cambridge News of 9 August reported that a petition hadbeen organised by the regulars of the The Duke of Wellington, not against closure but against plans to make internalchanges to the pub.The article said that Greene King, the brewers, planned

to knock down a dividing wall to make a single bar-room.The regulars organised a 200-signature protest and thelicensee, Mr Frank Thornhill threatened to resign becauseof the brewer’s proposals. He believed that the single roomwould end up either as a saloon or as a public bar and thatwould exclude customers favouring the alternative option. For him it was not a question of class but how a customer

presented himself. Those with tarmacon their bootsgravitated to thepublic bar whiledifferent types usedthe saloon. Hisantipathy to a singleroom hadapparently wonsupport from hiscustomers includingthe pub’s darts team, led by captain, MrDavid Cattell. Hesaid the changewould stop peoplecoming and spoilthe atmosphere of afriendly pub.Mr Nigel Watson

of 7 Green Streetwas quoted as saying

that the alterations had been instigated by the licensingauthorities demanding for some time that internal toilets beprovided. He had proposed an alternative plan but it hadbeen turned down because of expense and some by-law. The 200 signatures on the petition had been collected in

only two weeks with sixty signing on the first night.Despite this the regulars were given a frosty reception fromGreene King who refused to meet them. Greene King’smanaging director, Mr John Banham, said he was surprisedat the fuss being made, saying, ‘I didn’t know 200 peopleused the pub’. When asked about his refusal to meet with the regulars,

he expressed concern that this would create a precedentand every time Greene King wanted to alter one of its pubs, they would have to meet the customers to debate the rightsand wrongs of the situation.

At our May meeting, Val McKee gave a fascinating talkabout her Voluntary Service Overseas – a year teaching inEthiopia. Her ‘warts and all’ account gave a real picture ofthe country and illustrated the necessity of slowing downfrom the western way of living. Having no clocks orcalendars give time little meaning and no letterboxesmake a secondary school exercise such as ‘How to write aletter’ conducted in English very difficult to follow! Oldtext books being used were full of English colloquialismswhich moved Val to write a dictionary for the childrenexplaining what they meant and this continued to be usedafter she left. An interesting subject with a veryentertaining speaker.
