Video about using Wiki in Education
Objectives
After using wiki students will be able to:
1. Create their own pages.
2. Collaborate with each others in
projects.
3. Share their knowledge with others.
4. Interact with instructor or student by
synchronous tools.
Definition
A wiki is a web site that lets any visitor
become a participant: you can create or
edit the actual site contents without any
special technical knowledge or tools
It is a living collaboration whose purpose is
the sharing of the creative process and
product by many.
The word "wiki" comes from Hawaiian
language, meaning "quick" or "fast."
Features
• WYSIWYG editing
• HTML support
• Image insertion
• Tables
• Lists (numbered, bulleted,
hierarchical)
• Media insertion
(streaming audio/ video)
• Search
• Spell-check
• Hyperlink insertion
• Calendar
• RSS
• History
• Synchronous text
messaging
Advantages
Easy sharing: no having to send files over e-mail
Access: All team members can have access to it
anytime anywhere
One version: Everybody is working on the same
document, no need to add version numbers to
each document
History: Previous versions can be recovered if
there is need for it
Advantages
Wiki has no prearranged structure - it is a
flexible tool which can be used for a wide
variety of applications.
Anyone can edit and it is easy to use and
follow. This gives students the potential for
being authors, not just researchers.
Disadvantages
•Anyone can edit so this may be too open for
some applications and will affect the confidential
documentation.
•Open to SPAM if not managed properly.
•The flexibility of a wiki's structure can mean that
information can become disorganized.
•You do not receive an email or other notification
if your original post is edited. (copyright).
Used in Education
Products of research projects, especially collaborative
group projects. the products do not have to be simply
writing. They can include computer files, images, videos,
etc
People located in different parts of the world can work on
the same document and add their own parts. This builds a
community of learners.
Teachers can view ‘recent changes’ on the student’s Wiki
spaces so he can track students progress and assists the
assessment processes.
Used in education
Students are able to develop communication skills within
class using the computer
Students can effectively interact with each others by
asynchronous communication tools.

groups for themselves and peers: each group prepares the
guide for one aspect of the unit or responsibility rotates:
one unit guide per semester
Concerns raised
There are still concerned about the openness of wiki editing?
1. What is to prevent such a website from anarchy?
2. How does a wiki protect my authorship?
3. What if someone deletes my work?
Lamb (2004) describes various examples of wiki use outside the
classroom. Placement centers can use wiki pages to store and organize
content for job postings and career development. Wikis can be
provided by the university to act as a sounding board so that students
can voice opinions about university policies.
Both Augar et al. (2006) and Naish (2006) mention the use of wikis as
an icebreaker tool for online groupwork. They demonstrate how wiki
technology can be used to enhance social interaction among students
online as well as for the dissemination of information to the student
body, for building information repositories, or for the collaborative
production of documents.
