What is Resilience? The mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and behavioral ability to face and cope with adversity, adapt to change, recover, learn and grow from setbacks.

The Ready and Resilient Campaign integrates and synchronizes multiple efforts and programs to improve the readiness and resilience of the Army Family — Soldiers, Civilians and Families. Why Is It Important?

• A healthy mind and body are essential to individual and unit readiness

• Resilience combines mental, emotional, and physical skills to generate optimal performance (i.e. readiness) - in combat, healing after injury, and in managing work and home life

• Resilient individuals are better able to bounce back and overcome adversity by leveraging mental and emotional skills and behavior by seeking out training

• Individual resilience can be built, maintained, and strengthened when viewed as an enduring concept and acquired through regular training

Here in Wiesbaden, resiliency is built every day throughout the myriad of programs and services provided by the DFMWR team. Be it formal training classes offered by Army Community Services (ACS) or an informal workout at the fitness center, improving the resiliency of Soldiers, Family members, and Civilians is an integral component of everything DFMWR provides.

While ACS is the primary training tool, offering structured classes on the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness (CSF2) resiliency modules from certified Master Resiliency Trainers (MRT), other key programs such as SHARP, BOSS, CYS Services, and Sports and Fitness are essential components, delivering the holistic package.

MASSAGE

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY focuses on stimulating and releasing the tender areas of tension throughout the body. Similar to acupressure points, these “knots” are built up during a person’s life due to physical and emotional stress. Focused pressure is applied during a session to release your trigger points and can be quite painful but the effects are lasting and profoundly transformative.

MYOFASCIAL MASSAGE is used to treat injury and discomfort by reducing pain and increasing range of motion. It targets the fascia, or membrane that surrounds the muscle, and focuses specifically on releasing tension in this important area.

ORTHOPEDIC MASSAGE involves therapeutic assessment, manipulation and movement of soft tissues to resolve pain and dysfunction stemming from injury, trauma and postural imbalances. It focuses on restoring function and structural balance throughout the body for both prevention and rehabilitation.

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE gently and rhythmically moves the lymph through the body to relieve pressure and enhance the functioning of the immune system. It can be used for a wide range of purposes including faster recovery from injury, reduction of swelling from pregnancy and strengthened resistance to illness and is most often combined with injury, sports and pregnancy massage.

INJURY TREATMENT includes a wide variety of the above techniques and Deep Tissue in order to treat specific injuries such as carpal tunnel, whiplash and repetitive stress injuries.

Massage is more than just a luxury. Studies show that the human body needs touch as much as it needs oxygen, water and food to survive. Massage can provide the fuel you need to keep you going and stay healthy in this era of high stress.

They are also taught that no one should ever to be left behind. However, being an active bystander is not quite as easy as stepping forward to help someone who is visibly injured.

Active bystanders have to first learn to overcome false perceptions of situations. Unfortunately, society often negatively influences many bystanders’ behavior. All too often individuals believe that someone else will get involved. This is known as diffusion of responsibility. Another common belief is that people have brought on their own troubles by acting or dressing in a certain way. As a society we want to believe that someone has brought the problem on themselves. This is only a way to make us feel better for not taking action.

I always tell students in our courses that there are a few steps to learn to become an effective bystander. First, identify those things that stand in your way of intervention and realize the only true cost is your time and commitment. Second, recognize unacceptable or inappropriate behavior when it occurs. Third, feel obligated to make a positive change. Fourth, develop a plan to address the issue. Finally, take some sort of action to get involved. You do not have to do everything, but if you fail to do anything the problem will persist.

As a community we can work collectively to help prevent sexual assault. Everyone should feel empowered to say something or do something if they see something inappropriate.

Becoming an active bystander is no easy task. In today’s Military we are all told to act. Soldiers and Civilians have a duty to get involved in situations where someone needs support. In many cases this is not a problem. The Army spends hours upon hours training Soldiers to be experts in “buddy aid”.

But you don’t need to sign up for an obstacle race specifically. Conquering any physical challenge will give you the same incredible feelings of pride and accomplishment. You can set up a plan that suits your goals and lifestyle and still reap the benefits. Here are some tips for planning and conquering your obstacle:

1. Pick a big goal. There are lots of epic challenges out there, from marathons to bike races, triathlons, or multi-day hikes. What speaks to you? How does your gut complete the sentence: “Someday, I’d like to ____” before your brain says “but that’s too hard”? By choosing something you are interested in doing, you’ll have a head start on your motivation. Just make sure that your goal and your timeline to achieving it are in synch.

2. Assemble your materials. It will help to have a date on the calendar to ensure you are moving towards your goal and not putting it off. For many people, this means choosing a specific event. So see what is available in your area, or within an acceptable travel range. Check with your local MWR, fitness center, or outdoor rec center to see if they have ideas. Google can give you ideas for events that are farther afield. You also want to assess if you need any additional equipment, as well as ways to purchase it. Germans are very into sports, so there is a good chance you can probably find it either on post or on the economy.

3. Make a plan. Now you have a date on the calendar, it is time to figure out how to prepare. Before you start scouring the internet for training plans, you want to make sure you identify how much time you have available for training. And don’t forget that you will need to make time for proper recovery. Training will break down your body, but sleep and rest ensures that you will make improvements. Now that you have an idea of how much time you can train, use that to choose a training plan.

4. Create checkpoints and ways to measure them. Occasionally, you’ll want to verify that you are on track, and test events are a great way to do this. Many training plans will already have these in place, like a marathon plan that schedules a 10K and a half marathon. This could be an actual event, or just doing it on your own. By putting yourself in “race mode,” you can effectively measure your progress.

5. Accept that there will be good days and bad days. Outside of your checkpoint events, don’t worry about seeing daily improvement in your pace/speed/distance. There will be days when things go wrong, but you’ll learn more about yourself and your ability to persevere. There will also be days

Joe Desena, the founder of the obstacle-course race series Spartan Race, asserts that his races help build “obstacle immunity” - once you have faced the challenges of the race, like mudpits and wall climbs, you are no longer bothered by little annoyances. You’ve done something tough, persevered, and gained confidence.

where you are feeling great. Make sure you appreciate the good times to help you get through the bad ones.

6. Know that your nerves are getting you ready. As your event approaches, you’ll likely start to get really nervous and panicky. This is perfectly normal and it is your body’s way of preparing you for activity. But don’t let your nerves get the best of you! Remember all the training you have done in preparation, think about how proud you will be when you finish, and listen to all the encouragement you get from friends and family.

7. Savor your victory! What is victory? It might be finishing, it might be a new best time, it might just be all the improvements you’ve made since you started. You’ll want to make sure that you take the time to fully internalize your entire journey, from the high points to surviving the low points. Be proud of how far you have come and what you have accomplished. The “I can do anything!” feeling will serve you well in the future, when the little things are wearing you down, but only if you take the time to appreciate it.

These events challenge you both physically and psychologically - by planning and completing something you didn’t think you could do, you’ll reap benefits that will impact the rest of your life.
