Dear Friends in Christ, A farmer once told me that the darkest hour is just before dawn. It sure seems that way if you have ever had to stay up all night. In utter darkness, there is no color and no distinguishable shapes. You literally cannot see your hand in front of you. It is an eerie sense like you don’t even exist nor anything else. It is with great relief to hear that first bird sing in the darkness. With another and another bird joining, you know that it is the hymn of the dawn even though it is still pitch black outside. Dear Friends in Christ,

A farmer once told me that the darkest hour is just before dawn. It sure seems

that way if you have ever had to stay up all night. In utter darkness, there is no

color and no distinguishable shapes. You literally cannot see your hand in front

of you. It is an eerie sense like you don’t even exist nor anything else.

It is with great relief to hear that first bird sing in the darkness. With another and

another bird joining, you know that it is the hymn of the dawn even though it is

still pitch black outside. Gradually, you can make out the shape of your hand and

the tree to your right even though there is still no color, no texture, only shapes.

As the dawn comes, it is like going from the black and white in The Wizard of Oz

to over the rainbow as color seeps in all around: shades of green in the grass,

the leaves, the bushes; browns in the tree trunks and limbs and ground; not to

mention the changing colors of the sky. The brilliance of the rising sun brings

color to life!

Imagine what it must have been like that first Easter dawn! Gerhard Manley

Hopkins, an English poet and priest, captures this image in the meaning of the

resurrection of Jesus Christ for each of us:

Let Him easter in us, be a dayspring to the dimness of us,

be a crisom-cresseted east.

O Friends in Christ, may the blessings of Easter be with us all! Alleluia! Amen!

Session Highlights

The Session met Monday, March 18, 2019 at 6 p.m., in

the Administration Building.

Joining the session was Debbie Melson, Treasurer.

The meeting was opened by Johnsie Mason with a

devotion.

Treasurer’s Report: Debbie Melson presented the

financial report for February. While the balance sheet

information continues to show that the church remains

in excellent financial position, pledge income for the

first two months is well below budget, largely because

Prepaid Pledges are $26,000 under budget. Despite

the shortfall in pledge income to date, net income is

positive at $3670, though well under forecast, because

expenses are under budget by almost $17,000 through

February.

COMMUNICATIONS AND CLERK’S REPORT

A motion was made by Jacob Henley and seconded to

approve the request for baptism by Megan and Reggie

Brown to baptize their daughter, Sierra Lynn Brown,

on Sunday, April 21 at the 11 a.m. worship service.

The motion was approved.

A motion was made by Kay Hudson and seconded to

approve the 2018 Church Statistics. The motion was

approved.

Committee Reports:

Christian Education Committee: Ron Schildge

requested the session approve the May 19 Sunday

School hour to be a Church History Hour with the

memories video the Committee is producing for 300th

Anniversary of Sanctuary. All adult classes will be

combined and most likely children and youth classes.

This will take place in the Fellowship Hall. The motion

carried.

Congregational Care Committee: Johnsie Mason

updated the session on the Pictorial Directory. Elaine

has created a role in Shelby for Elle Meise to have

limited access to serve as coordinator for this project.

Elle has tested the system, and has successfully

uploaded photos. Options for educating members on

Shelby and the pictorial directory are being studied,

along with the best way to produce hard copies of the

directory for members that do not use technology.

Beverly Stribling has agreed to coordinate a new

fellowship ministry for Congregational Care. Dinners

for Eight will be for people visiting in each other’s

homes and Table for Six for groups to meet in a

restaurant setting.

Mission and Outreach Committee: Linda Mecchi

reported that Hunter Bradley’s big mission group,

scheduled to visit Johns Island June 16-22, has been

unable to find reasonable accommodations and may

have to go elsewhere. JIPC needs to quickly come up

with lodging ideas for this large group (over 100

people).

Operations Committee Report: Raymond Lightfoot

requested approval to replace the 20-year-old folding

machine which is broken and cannot be repaired. The

cost from two different vendors is $3500 and the

expense is not in the committee’s 2019 budget. The

motion was approved.

Personnel Committee: The following requests from the

Committee were approved:

1) Committee recommends approval of 5% salary

increase for custodian Annette Pye retroactive to

January 1, 2019; Annette was not reviewed in 2018

during her extended illness.

2) Committee recommends approval of 4% annual

salary increase for Elaine Earl retroactive to February

15, 2019.

3) Committee recommends approval of the revised

Children and Youth Protection Policy, revised

December 2018. It is included in the Employee

Handbook and also separated from the Employee

Handbook for use by JIPC volunteers.

4) Committee recommends approval of the new Johns

Island Presbyterian Church "Pastor Job Description".

5) Committee recommends approval of Dr. Murphy's

vacation request from April 28 through May 1, 2019.

Worship Committee: Jacob Henley requested and the

session approved having historical videos, books, prints

and notecards available for purchase and order during

the history hour on May 19th, 2019 in the Fellowship

Hall during the Kirkin/300th Anniversary. All proceeds

will cover the cost of production with all monies

remaining going to the Endowment Fund. The motion

carried.

SPECIAL REPORTS: Manual of Operations

Dr. Murphy handed out updates to the Manual of

Operations. The manual with the Plan of Organization

was approved in the second reading following the

presentation to the session at the February meeting.

Sailing Team Report to the Session: John Feldman

presented the minutes from the session retreat held on

Saturday, February 16 on Seabrook Island. The

participants at the retreat identified six initiatives to

pursue in the next steps of JIPC’s Visioning Process.

Following the session’s January approval of having the

Sailing Team “helping discern the next steps for JIPC’s

Discipleship and Ministries initiative”, the team will

serve as a resource for the Session Committees.

NEW BUSINESS

Wally Meggs was elected as Commissioner to the

Presbytery for 2019. Ron Schildge was elected

Alternate Commissioner and Johnsie Mason was

elected Second Alternate Commissioner.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE CHURCH

The Session adjourned at 7:15 p.m. with a prayer by

Jacob Henley. The next Stated Session Meeting will be

at 6 p.m. April 15 in the Fellowship Hall.

Respectfully submitted,

Charles Larsen

Clerk of Session

Reflections and Contemplations

One Great Hour of Sharing, collected on Easter Sunday, makes a difference in

the world through three impactful programs: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance,

the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People.

Started in 1949, One Great Hour of Sharing is a long-standing ecumenical effort

aimed at raising the funds necessary to provide relief and reconstruction for

communities in the aftermath of disaster. What started as an hour-long radio

appeal has evolved over the years, varying from eight to 29 participating

denominations, and has become the most participated-in Offering in the PC

(USA).

Today, projects supported by One Great Hour of Sharing are underway in more

than 100 countries. Please prayerfully consider how you can help.

Why We Need Easter

No one is exempt from tragedy or disappointment;

even God was not exempt. Jesus offered no immunity,

no way out of the unfairness, but rather a way through

it to the other side. Just as Good Friday demolished the

instinctive belief that this life is supposed to be fair,

Easter Sunday followed with its startling clue to the

riddle of the universe. Out of the darkness, a bright light

shone.

The cross of Christ may have overcome evil, but it

did not overcome unfairness. For that, Easter is

required, a bright clue that someday God will restore all

physical reality to its proper place.

—Philip Yancey, Disappointment With God

Our True Power Source

The story is told of someone who plugged a power strip

into itself and then couldn’t understand why the system

wouldn’t turn on! We get a kick out of such tales, yet

how often do we try to “power” our own lives? We

frequently think we need to be the source of our own

strength, joy, peace, energy and wisdom.

Jesus doesn’t teach us to find life within ourselves — or

in any human being or earthly circumstance, object or

philosophy. Rather, calling himself the good shepherd,

Jesus says, “I have come that [my sheep] may have life,

and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).

We don’t access that abundant life by “plugging into”

ourselves. Instead, Jesus invites us to plug into his

power — and joy, peace, hope, truth — through prayer

and Scripture, worship and service, fellowship with other

Christians and the beauty of God’s world.

Our All-in-All

What the hand is to the lute,

What the breath is to the flute,

What is fragrance to the smell?

What the spring is to the well,

What the flower is to the bee,

That is Jesus Christ to me.

What’s the mother to the child?

What the guide in pathless wild?

What is oil to troubled wave?

What is ransom to the slave?

What is water to the sea?

That is Jesus Christ to me.

C.H. Spurgeon

Easter is Eternal

If Easter means anything to modern man, it means

that eternal truth is eternal. You may nail it to the tree,

wrap it up in grave clothes and seal it in a tomb. But

truth crushed to earth shall rise again.

Truth does not perish. It cannot be destroyed. It

may be distorted. It has been silenced temporarily. It has

been compelled to carry its cross to Calvary’s brow … but

with an inevitable certainty, after every Black Friday.

Christ Has Triumphed!

Tomb, thou shalt not hold him longer;

Death is strong, but life is stronger.

Stronger than the dark, the light;

Stronger than the wrong, the right.

Faith and hope triumphant say,

Christ will rise on Easter Day.

Phillips Brooks

The Magnitude of God’s Love

It would be spectacular and amazing if some

king’s son were to appear in a beggar’s home to nurse

him in his illness, wash off his filth and do everything

else the beggar would have to do. Would this not be a

profound humility? Any spectator or any beneficiary of

this honor would feel impelled to admit that he had seen

or experienced something unusual and extraordinary,

something magnificent.

And yet the love of the Son of God for us is of such

magnitude that the greater the filth and stench of our sins, the

more he befriends us, the more he cleanses us, relieving us of

all our misery and of the burden of all our sins and placing them

upon his own back.

Whenever the devil declares: “You are a sinner!” Christ

interposes: “I will reverse the order; I will be a sinner, and you

are to go scotfree.” Who can thank our God enough for this

mercy? Martin Luther, Luther’s Works 22, 166-167

Deliver Us

We sing and say “hosanna” every Palm Sunday

but hardly ever in between. So what does that word

mean?

That first Palm Sunday, crowds spread their cloaks

before Jesus as people had before Jehu to proclaim him

king (2 Kings 9:13). They waved palm branches in

greeting — a traditional sign of celebration (Leviticus

23:40). And, of course, they shouted, “Hosanna!”

This was an exclamation of “a people in distress

[addressing] their king or their god,” explains Bible

scholar William Barclay. Drawn from Psalm 118:25,

hosanna is Aramaic for “save now.” By the time of

Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Barclay says,

hosanna may have “become to some extent only a cry

of welcome and of acclamation, like ‘Hail!’; but

essentially it is a people’s cry for deliverance and for

help in the day of their trouble.”

“Hosanna!” is the plea of an oppressed people to

the one they recognize as their true king: Jesus, their

Savior.

“Forgiveness is the well from which we

draw the water to wash others’ feet.”

D.Siler

“We are Easter people living in a Good

Friday world.” Barbara Johnson
