China vowed to "adopt defensive emergency measuresto respond to aircraft that do not cooperate in theidentification or refuse to follow the instructions."

What is an "Air Defense Identification Zone" orADIZ?

The ADIZ is not a new concept. It's essentially a bufferzone outside a country's sovereign airspace.

Several countries including the United States haveestablished ADIZ in international airspace next to theirnations. A foreign aircraft traveling in an ADIZ can berequired to identify itself for entry into that country'sairspace.

It is unilaterally imposed, so it doesn't really have a legalbasis and isn't based on negotiation with neighbors, saidJames Hardy, the AsiaPacific Editor of IHS Jane'sDefence Weekly. "It's purpose is to give the country anearly warning zone in which it can intercept potentiallyunfriendly aircraft."

"Countries are free to set their own Air Defense Identification Zone,"added Stephanie KleineAhlbrandt, director of AsiaPacificPrograms at the U.S. Institute of Peace. "It's a decision that's takenunilaterally but they become sensitive when they overlap as in thiscase."

What islands does China's ADIZ affect?

The Chinese defense ministry said the new air defense zone wasnot directed toward a specific country. The map and coordinatesreleased by China show the zone covers parts of the East ChinaSea, as well as the Daioyu/Senkaku islands.

China may also have stirred its South Korean neighbors. A reef,called Ieodo in the Yellow Sea sits about 149 kilometers southwestof Korean and 287 kilometers east from China, is partially coveredby the Chinese ADIZ. The Koreans have established an OceanResearch Station on Ieodo.

Why have Diaoyu/Senkaku islands been so contentious?

China says its claim on the islands extend back to 1400s, which wasused as a staging point for Chinese fisherman.

Japan says it saw no trace of Chinese control of the islands in an1885 survey, so formally recognized them as Japanese sovereignterritory in 1895. Japan then sold the islands in 1932 todescendants of the original settlers. The Japanese surrender at theend of World War II in 1945 only served to cloud the issue further.

The islands were administered by the U.S. occupation force afterthe war. But in 1972, Washington returned them to Japan as part ofits withdrawal from Okinawa.

According to Xinhua, China and Japan "agreed in 1978 to put theissue aside and solve it in the future."

The dispute intensified last year as protests erupted in China afterJapan announced it had bought several of the disputed islands fromprivate Japanese owners. AntiJapanese demonstrations turnedviolent as protesters hurled bottles at the Japanese embassy inBeijing, overturned Japanese cars, ransacked Japanese stores andrestaurants.

How have China's neighbors reacted?

Japan on Sunday slammed the Chinese announcement, saying ithad "no validity whatsoever."

Japan's Minister for Foreign Affairs called China's measure"profoundly dangerous acts that unilaterally change the status quoin the East China Sea, escalating the situation, and that may causeunintended consequences."

In South Korea, the nation's defense ministry spokesman, Kim Minseok said the country's sovereignty over Ieodo remains unchanged.

"China has unilaterally set up its ADIZ," Kim said. "The ADIZ thatChina has set up overlaps either with our military jurisdiction andmilitary operation approved areas or area within our government'ssovereignty, like Ieodo."

The Korean government would fly over such areas withoutinforming the Chinese side, he added.

The United States warned that China's military claim to air zoneover a disputed island chain creates the risk of "misunderstandingand miscalculation." Its statement drew a sharp rebuke from theChinese calling the U.S. for making "irresponsible remarks."

Jim Pan • 12 hours agoJapanese ADIZ has already cover the Diaoyu Island for a long time, China just didthe same thing. Japanese ADIZ is just about 100+ km to the mainland China, which has covered Chinese Exclusive Economic Zone. Japan has islanddisputation with its every neighbor which did a much better job than China. I have to say, this is a much less biased news than the last one, well done CNN.

If everyone does the same, imagine the chaos. One country may have illegally possessed territories before butthat is the present status and it should not be changed by force. Itmust be negotiated. Diplomatic means is the best solution.Imagine if USSR will claim their previous cities by force, there willbe war. That is what Hitler did. He thought that he has the authorityto change the status because of historical claim.

Even if China has some legitimate reasons to claim thesespecific islands, it is hard to be sympathetic to Chinabecause it uses bullying tactics to harass much weakernations like the Philippines and Vietnam to get them to giveup territorial claims on islands far from China proper andright off the coast of those other countries

There is no persecution of Hawaiian citizens. These islands have had Japanese citizens living on them forcenturies under the democratic government of Japan, notthe communist government of China with 700,000 watchdoginformation workers watching the internet and socialnetworks of its people. It is obvious, no wonder, why theJapanese on the contested islands feared Chinese incursionand sold the private land back to the Japanese government. We know this is a power play for land, sea, mineral rights, energy, money, and control of the region. The rule of politicshere seems to be the threat of force. Here we have a matchbetween an oppressive communist government against acoalition of governments, republics and free democracies.Who do you think the international community will support?

This is the same as how South Korea are treatingTakeshima/Dokudo. They believe that there is no disputeover them with Japan.

If China has a problem with the status quo, then they shouldseek diplomatic ways to resolve the issue and get a neutral, third party involved (The International Court of Justice forexample).

Japan would happily oblige and give their side of theargument.

However I doubt that China would do this because theydon't have any evidence to back their claim.

However, the Allied Countries concluded that they hadnever been part of Korea and therefore Takeshima wouldremain as Japan's territory.

In 1953, South Korea illegally took control of the Islands byforce and have occupied them ever since.

Since then, Japan has only used peaceful and diplomaticmethods to resolve the issue with South Korean.

Unlike China who are using force and aggression to try to"resolve" the Senkaku Island issue with Japan...

wrle • 2 hours ago massivebobThat is why south korea does not view japans claims asvalid. As koreas annexation is also not considered valid. Itdoes not really matter what western powers thought at thattime because prior to ww2 and annexation, dokdo wascontrolled by korea or otherwise known as joseon. This isevident even by historical records in japan. Dodko was onlysometimes marked as japanese territory by the japanesegovernment and only recently has their claims beenstepped up. So you may understand why koreans arereacting in such a way, not because they necessarily haveanimosity towards japan. The dispute between japan andchina, russia are different in nature respectively.

ReallyRiggedGame • 4 hours ago duduUnfortunately, that is a Chinese problem. The governmentgot the public stirred up; in China the public doesn't get orstay stirred up if the government doesn't want that. So thegovernment has a problem now. What it should *stop*doing is fanning public opinion anymore with BSpronouncements. "Defensive measures" against civilianairliners that don't bow to this? No, they won't. The firsttime they do: no landing rights any longer in a *lot* ofcountries. It's just hot air. How about proposing jointdevelopment of any resources in the area? Too much to askfrom such a great civilization?

zhou jiamurong • an hour ago AnonymousBefore 1895,the island is belongs to China .

Japan in the name of no man's Island have captured theisland secretly in 1895.

No treaties with China and No announcement Just Only Secret Occupation--means STOLE.

Yes, American saving the Chinese in WW2

So in 1972, when United States give the island to Japan,China protest.

China think it should return back the island's real owner. 3 1
