REGIAN has been awarded a first place rating in its class by the Columbia Scholastic Press As sociation, according to information just received by Mrs. Collins, year book Co-Ordinator. The CSPA each year judges stu dent publications from all over the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada and the Phili- pine Islands. Each phase in the production of the annual is an alysed and ratings are based upon the yearbook fundamentals set up by the CSPA. Congratulations to the students who worked many long hours to produce another annual that was a credit to Paul Smith’s College. Co-editors of the 1951 St. Regian were Martha Bedeil and Ruth Weston; Dick Koeritz was Art Editor, Martin Maloney, Photo graphy Editor, Earl Stacy, Literary Editor, and John Stocking was Business Manager. To you new students uninformed of the athletic strength of Paul Smith’s Coliege, may I remind you that our basketball team was one of the top Junior College teams in the East with a record of 17 wins and 1 defeat, and that our ski team distinguished itself by winning twenty trophies and 15 medals. Since basketball will be in the spot light in a few weeks, I’ll try to give a picture of our possibilities for the forthcoming season. Coach Ken Tobey’s men face a 12 game schedule. After looking down the list I find 5 games on our own hardwood and 7 on the road. To those who know the sport and who are aware of the advantage of playing at home, it is obvious that the going will be rough, without even glancing at the strength of the opposition. We open with Uti ca Tech (home) December 1; Gen eseo State Teachers (home) De cember 7; Middlebury (away) De cember 8; Potsdam State Teachers (away) December 13; Potsdam State Teachers (home) January 17; Utica Tech (away) January 30; Middlebury (home) February 4; Geneseo State Teachers (away) February 7; Rochester Tech (away) February 8; Ottawa Uni versity (away) February 13; Can ton Aggies (home) February 21; Canton Aggies (away) Feb. 27. After giving you a resume of the games to be played let us discuss the potential strength of this year’s team. After losing six of last year’s squad, the Paul Smith’s five 1 3 faced with the problem of living up to the very fine record main tained by the 1950 quintet. Re turning for their last year at P.S.C. will be such outstanding players as Holcombe, Deianey, Donchey, Gard ner and Corl. As far as I can see, Coach Tobey will find it tough to cut down the squad. Considering the number of excellent prospects out for the team, it looks like a successful year. Coach Tobey is planning many intramural activities, but the vital problem is that of student interest. Without the co-operation of the student body it will be impossible to plan such activities. To start the ball rolling, each dorm, or in dividual group shou.d enter teams in the proposed intramural basket ball league. Hand in the roster of your teams to Coach Tobey as soon as possible!
