Permaculture is a “design” practice that begins with dili gent observations of ecological principles and potentials and leads to simple design implementations that encourage and enhance integrated, well-balanced and growing com munities. Permaculture design is based on an efficient, low-maintenance integration of plants, animals, people and structures. On a small scale, individual sites are designed as virtual self-reliant ecosystems. On the global scale, Permaculture design practice is leading to the gradual, yet steady, healing of our one and only home . .. Planet Earth. This healing includes practical transitions from current ecologically destructive ways to those which enhance and affiance with the vast and rich life energies of the Earth. WHO IS THE INSTRUCTOR? Dan Hemenway, the course instructor, is one of three people in the Western Hemisphere certified to teach the Permaculture Design Course. He holds 5 diplomas from the International Permaculture Institute and has received two international awards for his Permaculture work with youths, prison inmates, and impoverished communities. His is the founder of Elfin Permaculture here in the United States, publisher and editor of the International Permaculture Species Yearbook. WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? The Permaculture Design Course is a 3-week, 150 hour intensive course taught both in the classroom and in the field which covers basic ecological principles and potentials and practical, responsible design applications. The course treats design considerations of: • energy technologies for urban, suburban and rural areas • integrated building designs, retrofitting, natural heat and cooling • water and nutrient cycles • tree crops for food, fuel and ecological stabilization • alternative economics • maximum food production with minimum effort • climate and soils, elevation and contour • native and cultivated plants • biological pest management • wild and domesticated animals • human needs and intended use The student works toward a comprehension and a capa bility to design self-reliant energy-yielding ecosystems. Upon completion of the Design Course, the student is usually certified as a Permaculture Design Apprentice. TUITION: $300. PREPARATION:' Reading of Permaculture I and II, by Bill Mollison, is strongly urged. These books are available through: Elfin Permaculture, P.O. Box 202, Orange, Massachusetts 01364.
