After being alerted to a hazard by a label, you may want to get more information about the product, because:
You are about to use that product
You have been exposed to the product and want to know what you should do
You want to recommend controls for the product
Lets look at the MSDS for a common product: Bleach

Lists all controlled ingredients and the concentration of each by percent
CAS number or Chemical Abstract Service for each ingredient. Like a serial number to avoid miscommunication
TLV or Threshold Limit Value is the acceptable level of exposure according to the ACGIH measured in milligrams per cubic meter (MG/M³) or parts per million (PPM). Example: 50 PPM means that 50 units of the gas is present for every 1 million units of air.
Hazardous Ingredients Includes:

Means of Extinction:
If involved in fire use water, carbon dioxide or other class B extinguisher
UEL:
None
Special Fire Hazards:
None
pH:

Flash Point is the lowest temperature that will give off enough vapour to burn, the lower the temperature, the higher the risk of fire
Hazardous Combustion Products are chemicals which may be formed when a material burns. They may have other toxic properties not on the MSDS.
Means of Extinction tells which type of extinguisher should also be used. This section should be consulted when developing programs and response plans.
6. Fire and Explosion Data Includes

7. Toxicological PropertiesRoute of Entry:
Eye, Skin Contact, Inhalation, Ingestion
Effects of Acute Exposure:
Will cause moderate irritation to skin and severe pain to eyes. Fumes may irritate mucous membranes and cause pulmonary edema.
Effects of Chronic Exposure:
Same as acute exposure
Irritancy:
Moderate to severe Teratogenicity, Mutagenicity, Reproductive
Effects:
Not Established
Synergistic Materials:
None
Respiratory Tract Sensitization:
May irritate mucous membranes if exposure is prolonged
13
Information about a chemical if poisonous
Route of Entry tells us which ways it can enter the body at a glance
Acute Effects describes the effects of poisons that have any effect immediately or after a single use
Chronic Effects describes the effects of poisons that have a gradual onset or take years of repeated exposure to have an effect
Toxicological Properties Includes:
14
8. Preventative MeasuresPersonal Protective Equipment:
Wear PVC or rubber gloves, eye goggles, shield or rubber boots.
When Handling Product:
Preferred that you wear a plastic jacket or apron.
Engineering Controls:
General ventilation is adequate. Ventilate storage tank outside.
Leak and Spill Procedure:
Dilute small spills with water and add sodium sulfate or sodium metabisulfate and flush to sewer. For large spills call CANUTEC.
Waste Disposal:
In accordance with Federal, Provincial, local government requirements.
Storage Requirements:
Use polyethylene, FRP or PVC containers. Store at -20 to-30 C.
Special Shipping Information:
TDG regulated, DIN#1797, Class B, Packing Group 111.
15
PPE describes the type clothing or protective devices to wear when using the chemical
Engineering Controls are ideal permanent changes to workstations, tools, equipment or processes to avoid or minimize exposure
Describes the proper way to handle, use and store the material. If applicable it tells us how to contain fugitive emissions
This section is important when developing and implementing programs and procedures
Prevent Maintenance Includes:
16
9. First Aid Measures
Eye:
Immediately flush with water for 15 minutes. Call a physician.
Skin:
Immediately flush with water. Call a physician if irritation develops.
Inhalation:
If inhaled, removed to fresh air. If symptoms persist, call a physician.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water, then drink one glass of water. Call a physician immediately. Never give anything by mouth if victim is unconscious or rapidly losing consciousness or convulsing.
17
Instructions for the immediate treatment to be given to a person for each of the possible routes of entry
This section should always be read as part of any first aid response. For example, you may be directed to:
Drink plenty of water OR just one glass
Drink milk in some cases and water in others
Vomit in some cases and NOT in others
Not reading the above could cause you to do the exact opposite - which could be harmful
First Aid Measures Includes:
