OurfutureinAmericadependsonthecontinuousworksofscientists,engineers,andmathematicians,whoinvestigate,analyze,anddesignnaturalandman-madeenvironmentsandinterprettheirworkforsociety.Americaonceledtheworldinscientificdiscoveries,butnowisfallingbehindinthenumberofscientists,engineers,andmathematiciansenteringtheworkforceeachyear.Onereasonisthatwedonotrequireorencouragestudentstostudyandmasterbasicandadvancedstudiesofscienceandmathlikeothercountries.
Itisproventhatstudentsaremotivatedbyparticipationinindependentstudy
projects.ThisScienceFairwasdevelopedtoencouragestudentstoaccomplishanddisplaytheirinvestigations.ThishandbookwasdesignedtoprovideassistanceandguidelinestoteacherswhohavestudentswhoaregoingtoparticipateintheWHJESPScienceFair.Thishandbookwillhelpteachers/coacheswithinformationontherules/regulations,forms,andsubmissiondeadlines.

TheWHJESPScienceFairbelievesthatallstudentshavetherightandopportunitytocompetefairlyforallawards.Thefollowingregulationswillkeepprojectsuniformforjudging,ensurethattheyabidebyallruleslisted.Forthesereasons,thefollowingwillbestrictlyenforced.
Ingeneral,thedisplayofanythingthatcouldbehazardoustothepublicisPROHIBITED,includingthefollowing:
• AnythingthatisALIVE(animals,plants,molds,etc.)
• Plantmaterialsintheirrawstate(livingordried)
• Taxidermyspecimensorparts;preservedvertebrateorinvertebrateanimals(deadbugs,rabbit’sfoot);Human/animalpartsorbodyfluids
• Fooditems(peopleorpetfood,etc.)
• Containersfilledwithwateroranyotherkindofliquid
• Sharpitems(needles,knives,syringes)includingglassorglassobjects
• Small,loosepiecessittingonthetablethatcouldbepickedupbyachild(chokinghazard)orfalltothefloorposingatripping/slippinghazardtomembersofthepublic.
• Photosofpeople,includingthestudent’sfamily,withouttheir(andifaminor,theirparent’s)writtenconsenttobedisplayed.
• Soil,sand,orrocksamplesexceptinasealedPetridishorbaggiesecurelyaffixedtothedisplayboard
• Allchemicals(laboratory/household),cleaners,poisons,toxicsubstances
• Drugsorcontrolledsubstances;hazardoussubstancesordevices(i.e.firearms)
• Dryiceorothersublimatingsolids
• Flames,fire,highlyflammablematerials
• Anyapparatusdeemedunsafeincludingemptytanksthatpreviouslycontainedcombustibleliquidsorgases.

1. Allexhibitsshouldbesturdilyconstructedandself-supporting.
2. Sizelimitsare30”deepfronttoback;48”sidetoside;108”floortotop
3. Aplaceatatableisprovidedforallentriesunlessfloorspacehasbeenrequestedontheregistrationform.
4. Allelectricalwiringmustbeofanapproved,insulatedtype.Electriccordsaretheresponsibilityoftheexhibitor.

6. Experimentsarerecommendedovercollectionsandmodels
7. Displaymustbeself-standingofreinforcedcardboard,plywood,orothermaterials.Theprojectcannotleanonthetable,wall,orotherprojects.Nail,glue,ortapecannotbeplacedonthetables.Noitemsshouldbeattachedtothedisplayboardexceptforpaperandphotographs(no3-dimensionalitems,lights,aluminumfoil,fabric,etc.)
8. Eachprojectmusthaveanentryformprominentlydisplayedonthebackoftheproject’sdisplayboard.
*AlthoughWHJESPwilltakeprecautionstoprotecttheexhibits,therewillbenoassumedresponsibilityforanyitemslostordamagedduringthefair.Valuablematerialandequipmentshouldbesimulatedorpictured.Note:itisadvisabletohaveextracopiesofnotebooksandotherprintedmaterials.
**EthicsStatement:Scientificfraudandmisconductisnotcondonedatanylevelofresearchorcompetition.Plagiarism,useorpresentationofanotherresearcher’sworkasone’sownandfabricationorfalsificationofdatawillnotbetolerated.Fraudulentprojectswillfailtoqualifyforcompetition.
