TRANSCRIPT
Whitman County Whitman County was formed in 1871 from part of Stevens County and was named after the missionary, Dr. Marcus Whitman. It is situated in the southeastern center of the state in the heart of the rich Palouse wheat growing region. Its early economic development was dependent on transportation. In the 1850s and 1860s the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and the Northwestern Stage Company acted as a lifeline for its residents. By the latter part of the century, four railroads were located in the county. Today Whitman County
is one of the most productive wheat growing counties in the nation. The city of Pullman is the site of Washington State University, a nationally and internationally known comprehensive university, featuring quality undergraduate training and strong research programs.
