English as a Second Language
ESL provides for the educational needs of English Learners (ELs) so that they can succeed academically in all content areas.
The ESL program at WSHS currently serves over 80 ELs from around the world.
New ELs are identified from the Home Language Survey completed at registration. Students complete the WIDA Screener to discern language ability.

Parent Responsibilities
Communicate regularly with teachers and administrators regarding the status of your child.
Ensure that your child is wearing appropriate attire, that does not distract from the virtual learning
process. Inappropriate attire including but not limited to the following are prohibited: clothing with
profanity; derogatory terms; racial slurs; sexual content; and clothing that is transparent or overly revealing.
Make every attempt to provide appropriate working stations/settings with minimal distractions for
your child (i.e., isolation, if possible, quiet areas etc.).
Consider joining PIE – Partners in Education – www.wshspie.org ~ [email protected]
Parent, Student, & Teacher Communication
• Please make sure all contacts in PowerSchool
Registration are correct.
• Parents and students should check their email daily.
• Communicate with teachers by using their Google
phone number and school email. (Teachers will
respond within 48 hours.)
• Check grades in PowerSchool regularly by
downloading the app on your phone.
Behavior Matrix
Behavioral Referral Steps
As a result of student virtual misconduct, teachers may:
Redirect students verbally/electronically (i.e., audio and video restrictions etc.)
Hold Virtual Parent Conferences at alternate times
Restrict privileges/rewards
Place students in isolated virtual classes (separated from the group but continuing with virtual
instruction), if there is a teacher assistant to continue instruction with the removed student
Submit student referrals to administration for persistent/serious misbehavior
It is extremely important that all parents/students read the SCS virtual student code of conduct
booklet that is located on our website. Bullying, harassment of any kind, threats, criminal offenses, intimidation, etc will be not be tolerated and will be investigated and handled according to district
policies. *(See virtual student code of conduct)
Students can be suspended and expelled for the virtual school setting.
1st Day Practice
The first day with Virtual Instruction will potentially involve a degree of trial and error, stress and
challenge. It is critical that teachers, parents and students exercise PATIENCE and FLEXIBILITY with
this LEARNING PROCESS.
Generally, the first day of instruction is designed to assist and acclimate everyone to this new and unfamiliar process. As learning styles with technology vary with us all, some will require more
assistance than others. Again, this day is for providing all with an equal chance to gain familiarity
and comfort with online learning.
We thank all of you for your patience ☺

Optional School Expectations
Expectations for Optional School students at White Station High School remain consistent with the
Office of Optional Schools and Advanced Academics as it relates to student attendance, conduct
and academic performance.
Students that are entering school year 2020-21 on “probationary” status should be mindful of the expectations for punctuality, consistency in attendance and grades. These standards WILL NOT be
relaxed in view of Virtual Learning.
It has not been determined whether White Station High School will be hosting virtual tours or
shadowing experiences for prospective students.
Any further questions can be directed to Mr. Ayers, Vice Principal and Optional School
Coordinator. [email protected] or 901 416-8886
Virtual Daily Attendance Process
Teachers will roll call using Microsoft Teams and take and record attendance in PowerTeacher Pro
within the first 15 minutes of every class period. If students are absent, the teacher will mark them
with the Absent by Teacher (AT) code.
Teachers will monitor attendance of virtual students in Teams and will be required to update the attendance of students who are tardy to Teams each period. If the teacher has marked a student
absent using the AT code, the teacher will change the absent code (AT) to a tardy (T) code.
At the end of each day, a sync of meeting (period) attendance with daily attendance will run and
calculate daily attendance based on the attendance entered each period. A Present by Calculation or Absent by Calculation code will be recorded
Virtual Daily Attendance Process
Parent or Guardian Actions
Any reason for an absence, checking in late, or leaving early will be sent via email
to the teacher whose class is affected as well as the grade level office team member. The email
must come from a parent or guardian email account this is verified in the PowerSchool system.
The parent or guardian will email the teacher and grade level office team member within two (2) days.

Virtual Daily Attendance Process
To Avoid Issues With Attendance
Students should always enter TEAMS by using the TEAMS app on their computer.
Additionally, they should download the TEAMS app on their phones as a back-up option.
If those 2 options do not work, they should dial into the Teams call by using the code that their teacher has shared with them.
Reporting Truancy
COVID-19
How is attendance addressed for students who are sent home because of a fever or COVID-19 symptoms?
If the student is able to participate in online learning, he or she may do so, and attendancewould be recorded for the student as appropriate. If the student is unable to participate because of illness, he or she will need to be marked absent. The absence should be excused given the symptoms and documented as such.
How will student loss of access (e.g. power outages, internet outages, technicalissues, etc.)interfere with student daily attendance?
Any time a student is not present for most of the day (or a class in secondary schools), he or she should be recorded as absent. Absences which result from access issues beyond thestudent’s control should be recorded as excused absences. Students should be able to makeup any work missed per the guidelines of existing District policy.
To limit absences caused by technical issues, students and parents should be provided with the dial-in information provided for the Microsoft Teams meeting such the student may call in if necessary and participate by phone.

How to Report Lost or Broken Devices
Q: What happens if my child's device is stolen?
If the dev ice is stolen, parents must file a police report and prov ide the report to the school. A school representative must becontacted within 24 hours after the occurrence. SCS will work with the police department to recover the dev ice.
Q: What happens if my child loses their device?
If the dev ice is lost, parents must file a police report and prov ide the report to the school. A charge of $75 is accessed the first three times a student loses a dev ice. The student is responsible for the full replacement cost of the dev ice upon the fourth instance in losing
the dev ice. Direct certified economically disadvantaged students can request a fee waiver at any time.
Q: What if the device is damaged?
All dev ices will come equipped with a durable case, intended to protect it from drops and spills. In the event that the dev ice is damaged, parents will need to alert their child's school of the damage and call the Parent Welcome Center (901-416-5300), press the
option for Computer Technology) to report the damaged dev ice so that it can be repaired or replaced. If the laptop is damagedbecause of negligence, parents may be responsible for up to the full replacement cost of the laptop. Do not attempt to disassemble
or repair the dev ice. Students are also expected to take care of accessories such as keyboards and power cord chargers.
You are responsible for the care of your devices, but if you do encounter a problem or issue, please contact one of
our Media Specialists: Ms. Carlson, [email protected] or Ms. Doyle, [email protected]
Computer Operation & Care
Eating and drinking are not allowed during virtual courses. This is hazardous to electronic devices and
can also be distracting during instruction.
Working stations must be free of foreign objects that are not being utilized for instruction.
Additional electronic devices should not be kept or used within the visible working area, unless they
are being utilized for instruction/are teacher approved. This includes the use of speakers, phones,
earphones and other devices that may provide distractions from teacher lead instruction.
The recording device being used for instruction must be positioned to allow teachers to observe both the working space and student, especially during testing.
