ABOUT ME:
My name is Rajdeep Dhaliwal, I'm a fourth year
student and I'm running to be your VP External for
the 2020-21 year.
In my time at UFV I have became involved in several
areas. I began by becoming a volunteer for newstudent orientations (NSO) and getting involved
with UFV lead when it first launched. I had
volunteered for several other events and was
reached out to be an assistant in the Collegiumlounge space when it first opened in Fall 2017. I've
involved myself with UFV athletics by becoming a
member of their Cascade Crew and scorekeeping
home games for our basketball teams, as well as
volunteering for campus recreation on some
occasions. I've also assisted at several international
student orientations as a Global EngagementVolunteer through UFV International. In the 2018-19
year I was elected as one of four student
representatives for the University Senate and I am
thankful for being elected again for this 2020-21
year. Through senate I sat on the UndergraduateEducation Committee as well as the Awards andHonours Committee. The South Asian Studies
Institute has the South Asian Community AdvisoryCommittee, for which I also serve as a student
representative. I have previously been elected as
secretary for the Cascade Journalism Society and
worked on their board until my elected term began
as VP External for SUS in May of 2019.
At the end of my term as VPE last year, I took the fall
semester off to explore other program options
before switching out of biology and into the
Bachelor of Arts program. This took me away from
campus and from my extra-curricular involvements.
However I am back and excited get involved once
again. I look forward to advocating for you and I'm
counting on your vote!

THE POSITION:
As Vice President External I would be
the primary contact for our external
stakeholders and with members of
government at all levels.
Concisely put, the responsibilities and
duties of this role are to advocate for
students at the institution and at all
government levels in partnership
with provincial and federal advocacy
groups in addition to representing
SUS on university committees
connected to academic, career
development and governmental
issues. Furthermore, the VPE is also
responsible for policy research and
development and for keeping the
board of directors up to date. The
VPE is also the liason between SUS
and the UFV Provost & Vice President
Academic
MY PLATFORM:
Student engagement in Advocacy:We need input from our student body on
federal and provincial priorities provided by
our advocacy partners, CASA and ABCS. I
have developed a deep understanding of
the issues and concerns that students have
as they get further into their degree and
when they try to further their engagement
on campus, however, I can’t speak for us all
on my own. I would like to establish anavenue to collect student input to directadvocacy efforts and policydevelopment. This will be in the form of
either an advocacy committee or open
meetings. I will also have an online
component to involve students.
Fairness for International Students:Domestic students were successful in
mandating a tuition cap, however, tuition
for international students is still unregulated.
This can be acted on by lobbying thegovernment to mandate universities tocap international tuition increases at thesame rate as domestic students, at 2%.
Furthermore, at UFV, international students
face more barriers since they pay for a full 15
credit course load whether they take that
many or not. This was a concern that was
brought to the university in my past term as
VPE and has yet to be acted on. I would like
to once again push UFV to move to a percredit structure for international studenttuition in place of flat rate for 15 credits.
Affordable Education:My main focus as VPE will be to advocate for
the transparency and reduction of tuition
whenever possible without sacrificing
education quality. I will explore mandatorynon-instructional fees. We see a portion of
these used to fund reasonable services, but
there is much that is unclear or unknown
about how certain fees are being used.
I will also join the movement to advocatefor Open Educational Resources at UFV.
Open textbooks are created by academics
and are free to use.

Mental Health:Collaborate with UFV student services to
introduce an online appointment systemfor counselling services. This would allow
students to see appointment availability
and make appointments online. Currently
the students are only able to make
appointments via phone or in the office.
On Campus Residence:Students living on campus are offered no
protections or security by the provincial
government since the BC residential
tenancy act doesn't apply to educational
institutes. I would like to work with ABCS to
lobby government to expand thetenancy act to apply to students oncampus or provide an alternative.
Overall Better Academic Experience at UFVSome goals are outlined below:
-Adjust final exam timetable to closely align
with course times instead of random
algorithm.
-Release textbook and course materials list
well in advance to provide students with
ample time to explore secondhand
resources.
-Tentative course lists for 2 years from all
departments to assist in degree planning.
