WELCOME TO THE| W H I T E C L OT H G A L L E RY |Leeds’ White Cloth Gallery ~ a brand new photography and film gallery and the first of its kind in the North of England ~ is now open in Leeds, with the unveiling of a hard-hitting exhibition which delves in to the lives of London’s gangsters.

The gallery, open from April 19th 2012, is a pioneering development on the Leeds cultural scene, with a unique vision to forge a socially aware and progressive approach to photography and culture. Supporting the artistic community, encouraging creativity and working alongside other local art organisations, White Cloth Gallery aims to aid the region’s development as a go to destination for art lovers everywhere.

Running for seven weeks, ‘The Family’ will be the first work to exhibit at the White Cloth Gallery and will feature pictures from the acclaimed photographer Jocelyn Bain Hogg’s book of the same name. This unique exhibition complements his hugely successful and controversial 2002 book ‘The Firm’, which documented a thriving London underground dominated by the players who made their names in the 60s and 70s: Freddie Foreman, Tony Lambrianou, Reggie Kray and Joey Pyle among them.

‘The Family’ features images of the Pyle family, including the heirs of Joey Pyle. Jocelyn gains unprecedented access into the family's most

intimate moments, including funerals, parties and first holy communions. The candid pictures also show the Pyles off duty, relaxing at home, watching football on TV and fooling around with the kids. There are few plastic gangsters here - the exhibitionism of the late 90’s has given way to realism. The game has changed, and the Pyles are astute enough to recognise this.

Three years in the making, ‘The Family’ honestly captures the everyday lives of Jocelyn’s subjects. He bravely shot the exhibiting works using traditional film - only able to see what his lens had captured once the film was developed.

“We’re delighted that Jocelyn’s remarkable portrayal of London’s underbelly will debut at the opening of White Cloth Gallery, Leeds. We wanted our opening to be a true exemplar of the types of work we wish to exhibit and we believe Jocelyn’s extraordinary photography does just that.

It’s our intention that the White Cloth Gallery will be a popular space where the work of established artists such as Jocelyn, will be exhibited alongside upcoming local talent, aiding Yorkshire’s burgeoning development as a region of arts and culture.”

Prints from Jocelyn Bain Hogg's series, 'The Family' are available in limited editions of only 20. This means that only 20 of each print will ever be sold and once 20 have been sold, no more will be made available, making each print a collector's item.

Limited edition prints increase in value the higher their edition number and the rarer they become, making each purchase an investment, which should retain and potentially increase in value over the years, whilst you enjoy your art.

Art as an Investment?

According to a recent article in Business Insider*; “Art has traditionally been considered a niche alternative asset class, but given the sector's solid performance compared to more traditional investments in recent years, that could soon change.

Deloitte Luxembourg and art market research firm ArtTactic just released a major report looking at the early stages of an art and finance industry around the world, and conclude that the art market is going through a major transformation.

Art is increasingly being recognized as an asset class in its own right, as new vehicles for art investment appear and more wealth managers start offering art-related services.

The report also offers a look into how different markets are approaching art investments. Not surprisingly, China is at the forefront.”

A limited edition original print from a well-known artist is more than likely to retain and increase in value, although the potential future financial gain is of course, secondary to the enjoyment you will get over the years from owning and displaying your own print.

Own Art Scheme

In recognition of this change, the Arts Council have devised the Own Art Scheme, which allows investors to borrow from as little as £100 up to a maximum of £2,000, to purchase recognised works of Art. The loans are easy to apply for and are available on an interest free basis, repayable over a ten month period. White cloth gallery is in the process of applying for the Own Art scheme and this will be available to customers in the near future.

“Art has outperformed the S&P 500 Total Return equity index every year since 2000.”“The U.S. and European market for post-war and contemporary art has exploded in the past decade, from $254 million in 2000 to $2.1 billion in 2011”“As art has gained traction as an investment class, wealth managers have started adding wealth-related services.”*source; Business Insider, December 2011

Hello everyone

I would like to wish you a VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE BRAND NEW WHITE CLOTH GALLERY, PHOTOGRAPHY & FILM.

The primary aim of White Cloth Photography and Film Gallery is to provide a unique space for established artists to exhibit and elevate projects of particular importance while at the same time providing a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work.

The gallery and its events space also has a pioneering vision to support the artistic community, encourage creativity and work alongside other local arts organisations to aid the city's burgeoning development as a cultural centre and to become a go-to destination for art lovers everywhere.

Throughout these endeavours we also wish to promote a socially aware and progressive approach to visual culture and aim to create a sense of community, attracting artists and visitors from all walks of life.

We have been able to bring this project to fruition thanks to the support of charity Regeneration Through the Arts and property asset Management Company, Vektor Investments Ltd. The gallery is part of a wider urban renewal programme to build and energize communities whilst giving local artists much needed support to gain a foothold in an increasingly competitive and challenging industry.

Endorsing and raising funds for a number of charities, a percentage of the gallery's sales and events income are donated to its elected charities.

Core to its objectives as a centre for arts and visual culture, the gallery will host regular events including workshops, seminars, screenings and book signings giving visitors the chance to meet those who exhibit.

White Cloth Gallery is also home to the WCG fully licensed Café and bar - a cool and vibrant urban retreat, serving up tasty snacks for those looking to enjoy the exhibitions, as well as those just looking to grab a drink or a bit to eat.

We hope that you will enjoy our gallery for many years to come and we look forward to you joining us, indulging in eclectic artworks and film productions from all around the world.

Thank you and warm regards,Sharon PriceCo-Creative Director | White Cloth Gallery

7 PETER DENCHBEST OF BRITISH | 5.7.12 - 17.9.12

England Uncensored by Peter Dench

Peter Dench was made in England in 1972 on the feast of Saint George, the patron saint of this great nation. He shares a birthday with William Shakespeare, arguably the greatest Englishman that has ever lived. For the first 18 years of Dench's life, home was never more than a few minutes' walk from the seaside. Weighing into the world at a sizeable 10lb 2ozs, from the first breath sea salt filled his nostrils, the sound of seagulls burst his eardrums and saturated colours startled the retina; deck chairs, Punch and Judy, arcades, bumper boats. Dench lived for the seaside; this was his introduction to England and he was hooked.

Having had the privilege to work on assignment in more than 50 countries across the planet, it is to England he consistently points his lens. It is his passion and his home. In 1998 Dench started out on a photographic project to document the country and the people that have shaped him. The photographs take us to famous parts of the country, such as Lord's cricket ground, Shakespeare's birthplace, and Blackpool – where Dench shows us an old couple snogging with the tower as a backdrop. But the pictures also introduce us to some of England's more unusual events, such as the War & Peace Show in Beltring, Kent – which calls itself “the largest military vehicle spectacular in the world”, and gives civilians a licence to dress up as Nazi soldiers and drive around in tanks. Dench caught many of the

He has been commissioned for campaigns by The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, The Sunday Times Magazine, Wallpaper*, Guardian Weekend, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire and GQ Magazine.

Chris has also produced advertising campaigns for the likes of British Airways, Philips and Toyota.

Floyd was shortlisted in 2008 for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize for a photograph of the artist and film maker, Steve McQueen. His portraits featuring nineties Britpop stars such as Oasis, Shaun Ryder and Supergrass currently appear in the National Portrait Gallery's collection.
