Murder in the First is produced by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc. (playscripts.com)

As we gather today, we acknowledge the sacred and traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, the Anishnaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations. This territory is covered by the Williams Treaties. Whitby Courthouse Theatre recognizes the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this community, and on this territory.

Page 4: WHITB OUR A 20119 Murder · 2019. 4. 30. · Brandon Rideout. Sound Design. Alex Konc. Set Design. Steve Clarke. Stage Manager. Peggy Sowerbutts. Costumers . Monique Essegern & Donna

From the Director Alone in a prison cell somewhere in the dank bowels of Alcatraz Prison an inmate sits. Darkness surrounds him and the silence is deafening. Upon release from that cell he is a changed man. Originally placed there with the intention of punishing and reforming him, one is left to wonder if something unintended occurred. Did his stint in isolation give him the opportunity to plan an elaborate act of revenge? Perhaps it only drove him to insanity. Did he emerge as a murderer or a genius? Maybe it destroyed him as a man. That will be for the jury to decide.

We live in a world of unintended consequences. A government seeks to preserve jobs but their actions in doing so lead to scandal. Friends get appointed to high offices and charges of nepotism abound, while the population wonders if trust can be restored. Years ago, in Canada, a school system was created to “civilize” the indigenous people but left in its wake a tragedy of cultural rape. Some intentions are fool-hardy and should never have been initiated, and others are good and worthy yet somehow end up disastrously. On a more personal level, the “best of intentions” can and do go wrong. Simple apologies can right the wrong, but few find the strength to offer the apology. And we are left to decide what is truly the intention.

Murder in the First explores intentions and their consequences. An apparently “open and shut” case turns out to be anything but. Relationships, both personal and professional are called into play and unintended consequences emerge, damaging the relations and people face difficult decisions. The best laid plan can go awry, but can it be recovered? Are the courts seeking the truth or merely a conviction?

Murder in the First will ultimately ask of us, “is anything beyond a shadow of a doubt?” The cast examined this in rehearsals and great debates followed on who is the true victim. As we dug deeper into the author’s script, we found other levels of meaning, intention and consequences. All this we have placed on the stage before you. It will be for the jury to decide.

It’s the opening night of The Golden Egg on Broadway, and the wealthy producer Julia Budder is throwing a lavish party in her Manhattan townhouse.

Downstairs, the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a group of insiders have staked themselves out to await the reviews. The group includes the playwright; the unstable director; the pill-popping leading lady; and the playwright’s best friend, who passed up this production for a television series.

Add to this, a drama critic who’s panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town aspiring singer, and you have a prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre — and for comedy.

Warning: profanity and drug use.

The timeless, captivating story is now a multi-award winning Broadway musical filled with personal discovery, heartache, hope and everlasting love.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, it focuses on the four March sisters — traditional Meg, wild, aspiring writer Jo, timid Beth and romantic Amy at home in Concord, Massachusetts.

Struggling while their father is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War, the young March women’s lives unfold through several recreations of melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio.

Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sunby Norm Foster

At 35-years old, Robert has the mental capacities of an 8-year old, but that doesn’t make him any less wise in the ways of the world. Holly is pregnant, alone and simply needs the right break.

A story about people finding the nerve to take responsibility, and persevering against the odds.

Uplifting, poignant and funny, Kiss The Moon, Kiss The Sun will capture your heart and possibly change the way you view people forever.

“Before this glorious life is done, I shall kiss the moon and kiss the sun. It’s about trying to get the most out of life, but Robert and I have a different meaning for it. I’m the moon that watches over him at night, and he’s the sun who brightens up my days.” Norm Foster

Story by Meredith Willson & Franklin Lacey

June 6-16, 2019There’s trouble in River City and the Whitby Courthouse Theatre’s Youth Group brings it to life this June. The six-time, Tony® Award-winning musical comedy follows a fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a marching band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who tries to transform him into a respectable citizen.
