Whimsy IllustratorsMeet the

Criss ArmstrongCrissy Armstrong is living the dream ofher youth; creating art every day.Whether that art takes the form ofdrawing, coloring, painting orcreating a card, she is never morerelaxed and content than when sheis in the process of creating. Shetook some drawing courses at thehigh school level as well as paintingcourses through her local collegeand art clubs, and has kept her skillssharp by constant practice.

Most days find her in her bright, spacious studio that has a beautiful view of the surroundingNorthern Ontario forest and the lake near her house. She loves to take her dog for walks in thebush where she often sees wildlife. She has always loved observing and interacting with animals;their cute and often humorous antics serve as great inspiration for her drawings.

In 2009, Crissy started drawing images for Whimsy Stamps, and has been illustrating for them eversince. “Drawing for Whimsy is one of my greatest joys. I get to reach into that endless well ofchildlike wonder again and again. I really enjoy adding humor to my images too, and sometimesI find myself laughing even as I draw. I think, if it makes me laugh to draw it, perhaps it will makeother people laugh to use the image on a hand made card, and then perhaps also make therecipient of the card laugh too. If I think of it that way, the joy gets multiplied many times over.”She considers it a high compliment when crafters purchase her images to use on their owncreations, and she loves to see the end result, which she feels is a “collaboration” between herand the Whimsy customer. “I can’t pick a single favorite image that I’ve drawn,” she says, “but Ican say that I generally favor my horse, dog, cat, and penguin images, and anything to do withthe Christmas theme.

Crissy feels so blessed to say she has been very happily married to Mike for over 30 years.Together they raised four children who are now fully grown and on their own. They are so proudof their kids and their two grandchildren, whom they visit as often as they can. “I have so much tobe thankful for, I cannot begin to tell you. Every day I get to do what I was made to do; createart. And all the while Mike spoils me rotten too. I am a lucky girl, and I know it.” She hopes thatjoy and gratitude comes across in her drawings because she would like nothing more than tospread that joy to others.

Childhood is a magical moment in life. A child is a wonderful person. She is free. She isunapologetically HER, vibrant, adventurous, inquisitive, fun loving, happy, fearless.

A child has no inhibitions. She believes in herself. She is loved for who she is. Her heart is as big as theworld. She loves to learn new things, and has a million questions and seeks to find all the answers. She is authentic, filled with love, and a love for discovery.

When we shine like a child, we are our Best selves. We are strong, beautifully charismatic andabsolutely irresistible. We are not soft, or weak. We are happy, and subconsciously learn to adaptto our strengths. Childhood is an enriching, magical moment of our lives, and today is noexception.

By honoring the child within you, you tap into the REAL you. You begin to discover who you truly aretoday. You understand your journey so far, where you want to continue it, and how amazing youare in the process.

We each have what it takes to fulfill our dreams, to reach out, to make a positive difference. To besuccessful. To be happy. A child can teach us so much about ourselves. This is why my mantra is,"Honor Your Inner Child."

This is why so much of my art focuses on children, and the beauty, the innocence, the fearlessness, the "Peter Pan," even the magic, that lies within this part of ourselves.

Because childhood is ageless. It is timeless. And it lives within each of us right now. Childhood is thefoundation of my art. And the art of being YOU. So BE You. Be Unapologetically You. Be your BestSelf. Be your own kind of Magic. And Honor your inner child™, and all your possibilities. BecauseYou make the Difference.

Lots of love, xo Elisabeth

I Love to Draw. That about sums it up. It is all I've ever wanted to do. I was lucky enough tolive that dream and work in Animation for over 15 years. Almost a decade of which, was asan Animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. I had the pleasure to work on suchfilms as, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Atlantis, Lilo and Stitch and Brother Bear. Afterthe studio closed in 2004, my husband and I relocated to the mid-west. Since then I haveconcentrated on raising my 2 beautifully spirited children, while making a new career inIllustration and Design. From my body of work, you can see I love drawing fun, happyanimals and children and food. There is no object safe from me! When I hear my drawingsmade you smile, it just makes my day!

Nina-Marie Trapani

Hi there, I’m Nina-Marie! I am a fun, quirky artist in my mid-twenties;illustrating and designing is my job and Ilove everything about it.

I grew up my whole life by the ocean, along the coast of the Mid Atlantic andNew England; to this day, I still enjoyspending my spare time looking for seaglass and seashells while listening to thesound of the waves hit the shoreline. Ihold a special love in my heart for bothcats and horses alike, and my favoritecolors are turquoise and purple.

I have been making cards since 2007,perfecting my skills and techniquesevery day; no matter how new oradvanced an artist is, you discover newthings all the time.Whenever I'm asked to define my style, I simply say "eclectic". I do not follow a set design style;rather, I simply design whatever my mind feels like creating at that time... which can be quitevaried depending on the day! If you asked what my favorite types of cards to make arethough, I would have to say critter cards... I cannot resist the cuteness! :) What I enjoy mostfrom my artistry is sharing my love of life through my creativity; bringing joy and smiles topeople's faces, and spreading laughter amongst those I interact with. Life becomes dullwithout love and laughter.

TutorialI often get asked what do I do with all my scraps of card and paper. One idea is to makecard toppers. These are quick and easy to make and will definitely come in handy sometime when you need a quick card.

Turn to page 32 for supplies

Page 28: Whimsy Inspired E-Magazine Issue 1

www.whimsystamps.com 28 Whimsy Stamps, LLC

step 1Pick some cardstock and papers that mix and match. You dont have to use big pieces, you can have small strips. As you can see in photo 1 and 2, I have used all sorts of sizes. Itried to keep them rectangle or square as these are easy shapes to work with. You canmake them what ever size you want, my sizes for the base matts are, green card 13cmx11cm, black card 13.5 x 11.5 cm, grey card 14x11.5 cm.

Page 29: Whimsy Inspired E-Magazine Issue 1

www.whimsystamps.com 29 Whimsy Stamps, LLC

step 2Once you have your base card, then you can just add bits of paper that will fit ontothe card. Again, you dont have to use full sizes, use several layers to cover your basematte. This is the idea behind using all the scraps. You can also distress the edges oruse some white paint to add a bit of texture. Another idea would be to add stitchingbefore you stick everything together, but you dont have to, they look great withoutany added details.

Page 30: Whimsy Inspired E-Magazine Issue 1

www.whimsystamps.com 30 Whimsy Stamps, LLC

step 3Once you have all your papers sorted, you can stamp a simple message or use an oddstamped image you have colored but have not used yet. This is a perfect project forsomething like this. Simply matte it onto another bit of card either matching or a differentshade. Final step should you want to, you can add embellishments such as ribbons andbows, die cuts or flowers.

As a tip: I kept mine plain until I was ready to mount them onto a card, this way they storeflat until i use them.

Hope you enjoyed this little tutorial f or using up scrap papers. hugs Tracy x

An easy way to give CAS or one layer cards some dimension is the ghostmasking technique.

Tutorial

Whimsy Stamps Products:Clearly Whimsy Stamps setFeeling Fruity; Materialsused: Circle paper punch1 3/4" (or die, dependingwhat kind of stampedlabel you'll be using),Vellum paper, Cardstock, white, yellow and blackstamp pads (or whatevercolors you prefer), Acrylicblock

Step 1:

I used the circle label fromthe 'Feeling Fruity' stamp setand stamped it with black inkonto my piece of whitecardstock.

Step 2:

Now onto our first mask. I punched outa circle from the vellum paper.Keeping the rest of the vellum paper, you'll need it later as your second mask! The punched out circle should coverthe stamped circle completely. In mycase I had to use a 1 3/4" inch circlepunch. I adhered it using repositionabletape.

Page 35: Whimsy Inspired E-Magazine Issue 1

www.whimsystamps.com 35 Whimsy Stamps, LLC

Step 3:

Using yellow ink Istamped a row oflemons onto my whitecardstock; also rightover my vellum coveredcircle

Step 4:

Removing the vellumcircle and making surethere's no tape residueleft. Any sticky leftoversare best removed usingan eraser

Step 5:

The leftover piece ofvellum paper is oursecond mask. It's kept inplace again withrepositionable tape.

Page 36: Whimsy Inspired E-Magazine Issue 1

Step 6:

Using the lemon stamp again Istamp the two wedgesconnecting with the circleagain. After inking my stamp Iremove most of the ink bystamping on a piece of scrappaper first. This way the color ismuch softer. Thanks to theclear stamps and the acrylicblock aligning the image iseasy.

Step 7:

Removing the vellumpaper mask and anytape residue. Now youhave a softer coloredimage shining throughyour label.

Step 8:

Which gives a little bitthe effect of lookingthrough a frosted glass.Stamping the sentimentwith black into right intothe label over the softimage.

Creating a Cloudy Sky

by Bridget Curnow

Staring with the small wispy clouds at the bottom of the image, use the C00, then you have to holdthe pen very lightly and very lightly touch the paper, with what is best described as a shakymovement, and map out the outline of your clouds

Repeat for as many clouds as you want in your sky, then take the C01 and starting underneath eachcloud, use the shaking movement to trace along the previous outline.

Then using BV31, trace your outlines to give more depth to the bottoms of the clouds.

Continue with the light shaking movements using BV20 and V20 to complete each cloud and blendinto the sky. Adding these colors will create some texture and additional depth.

Supplies Need for tutorials:

Copic Markers: V20, BV31, C01,C00, BV20, B0000, B00, B01 anda Colorless blender pen; goodquality blending cardstock suchas Make it Crafty blending cardor Express-It.

Creating a Blue Sky

by Bridget Curnow

Using B01, underline yourclouds to give a darker blue, then once this is done, go toyour next shade down, which is B00 and use this to fillsome of the sky, workingaway from the B01 and theclouds. Then lastly for yoursky use B0000, which you canthen blend with B01 to tone itdown a shade, almost usingit as a blender, then goahead and fill in the rest ofthe sky with this color.

The final step is to use theColorless Blender to go overthe clouds to remove someof the color and give themtheir light fluffy appearance.Small circular motions withthe blender help to createthe fluffy finish.

Card by Bridget Curnow

Whimsy Stamps Products:Spring Chick and When itRains from our Krista Heij-Barber collection;Materials Used: card stock, ink, Copic Markers

Try and make it so the clouds get progressively larger as you move toward the top of theimage and always put in half clouds as well to give the impression of a little movement.

And just remember to use light touches, you can always build the colors up gradually, which isbetter than laying too much color down to begin with.
