Where there is doubt, faith. By Tim Hunt “The Prayer of Saint Francis” says we should sow things--in this line, faith where there is doubt. According to Hebrews 11:1 (King James) faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” There are more accurate translations but none I like better. So faith makes possible our hope of salvation, for one thing, and enables us to believe in Jesus’ mission on earth even though we did not witness it. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” I claim those blessings because I have not seen and yet believe! But how can I sow faith? One model is a farmer sowing seed; we can find reasons for optimism in his actions. The farmer can only hope his seed will germinate, sprout, and grow into a cash crop. He knows it has worked that way in the past but those experiences are no longer there for him to see; they are only memories. There may be some evidence of past success in full silos and bank accounts; but farming still requires hope—if for no other reason, the vagaries of weather. So maybe the farm- er’s faith in knowing what has happened before and hoping it will happen again is important to un- derstanding sowing faith where there is doubt. (Continued on page 2)

Where there is doubt, faith.By Tim Hunt

“The Prayer of Saint Francis” says we should sow things--in this line, faith where there is doubt.

According to Hebrews 11:1 (King James) faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of

things not seen.” There are more accurate translations but none I like better. So faith makes possible

our hope of salvation, for one thing, and enables us to believe in Jesus’ mission on earth even though

we did not witness it. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

I claim those blessings because I have not seen and yet believe!

But how can I sow faith? One model is a farmer sowing seed; we can find reasons for optimism in

his actions. The farmer can only hope his seed will germinate, sprout, and grow into a cash crop. He

knows it has worked that way in the past but those experiences are no longer there for him to see;

they are only memories. There may be some evidence of past success in full silos and bank accounts;

but farming still requires hope—if for no other reason, the vagaries of weather. So maybe the farm-

er’s faith in knowing what has happened before and hoping it will happen again is important to un-

derstanding sowing faith where there is doubt.

I have more experience with doubt than with faith.

I see it around me all the time and sometimes in

myself. I am seventy two years old. Whether that is

the new sixty or not, most of my life is behind me.

That gets me to thinking. It is not that I doubt the

saving power of Jesus often or seriously. But every

once in a while something—maybe the Devil—gets

working in my head and causes me to ponder

whether some of the great and godless philosophers

I read when I was younger might not have been

right. When I see a photo taken from outer space I

sometimes wonder, did God really create all of that?

My answer to moments of doubt is prayer. As God

renews my faith, I become aware that he is doing

for me what I cannot do for myself. When God

restores my soul I realize that I, at the very least,

can lead others by example. When it comes to

sowing, that might be the best that I can do.

Camp Cross on Lake Coeur d'Alene is a place of

scenic natural beauty. You'll enjoy hiking, boating,

swimming, campfire songs and more. Come for our

youth and family camps, or come for one of our adult

retreats. Stay for the friends, relaxation, and wonder-

ful community.

As an Episcopal Church Camp, part of

The Episcopal Diocese of Spokane, we empha-

size the values that Christ teaches us of relationships,

prayer, discipleship, and service. We hope to instill

these values in campers so they will take them back

to their homes and communities to become disciples

for the transformation of the world.
