Dear Friends,
I hope you all had a fruitful and blessed week. Once again, thank you for your prayers. I had a safe journey but, because of the time constraints, did not actually travel to my home village which is in the Western part of the country – East Portal. I only stayed in the big city of Kampala. It was heartwarming to be with all of my family, relatives and friends! I offi ciated at the wedding of my nephew and his fi ancé. It was a colorful celebration marked with ululations, singing and dancing with over 600 guests!
Join me this weekend in congratulating our children who are making their First Holy Communion, and those who are being confi rmed in the faith through the sacrament of Confi rmation. Fr. Greg Schlarb, the Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Director of Stewardship for the Diocese of Phoenix, offi ciated as a representative of Bishop Th omas Olmsted.
Each Confi rmation candidate selects a sponsor, who must be a practicing Catholic, and a Confi rmation name. Th is name must be a Christian name. Th e new name is symbolic that the candidate is becoming a new person, taking up a unique role as he/she becomes a “soldier” of Christ by defending the faith.
By virtue of the sacrament of Confi rmation one becomes a true witness of Christ. During the celebration the candidates renew their baptismal vows and are anointed with chrism oil. Th e candidates then receive the seven gift s of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.
Allow me to thank Holly Forseth, our parish Religious Coordinator, and all of the volunteer catechists who prepared our children for these two sacraments. I have interacted with the children on several occasions and all were excited about receiving the body and blood of Christ and being confi rmed in the faith.
Once again, join me to congratulate our children. We also thank the parents and the sponsors who have been, and continue to be a part of, the journey for their children as they grow in the faith.
I wish you all a blessed and fruitful week.
Fr. Bob
