Pastor’s Letter

October 5/6

Dear Parish Family,

It is now well over a year since I began my ministry here as your pastor. Last fall I ran a page each week in our bulletin to ask for ideas about the future of SHJM. The responses I received all spoke of the need for more ministries and more activities to serve our parish family. This year I am happy to report much progress.

Most people think the most difficult thing a pastor needs to do is to ask for money. I would say that while asking for financial generosity might be the most uncomfortable part of leadership, the hardest part is actually asking for the gifts of time and talent. These most personal gifts, especially the gift of time, are very hard to give, especially considering the busyness of modern life. I find that people tend to be very humble about their talents and so it is often necessary to uncover and nourish the gifts that are present in a community.

Our parish has been blessed and enriched by the gifts of time and talent that have been shared. Events like of our summer concert series and our tent party show that the community life of our parish is very much alive. We now have a very active ministry of consolation and a new ministry of hospitality for our weddings. Our music ministry is opening opportunities for more and more young people; our new women’s ensemble promises to be a special blessing.

While all ministries make important contributions to the life of a parish, there is one ministry that seemed to be especially important for us to develop at this time — our youth ministry. This past Tuesday, a group of young people met to establish a youth council to plan events that will shape our youth ministry. Soon a myriad of events geared toward the social and spiritual needs of our young people will be publicized in our bulletin, on Facebook, and in notices to our schools.

Why is this so especially important? Because young people are important. Many times you will hear people say something like “our young people are the future of our church.” What I would like our parish to say to the young is: “You are the church! You are here right now!”

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Religious E

ducation A Note from Religious Education Director:

Jennifer Ferrantino We are off to a fantastic start in Religious

Education classes; the students continue to enter

the class rooms with big smiles and open minds!

The teachers are eagerly planning and getting to

know the students, it is a wonderful time of year!

As we watch our students blossom and grow here in religious education, we

can encourage faith formation at home with prayerful food for thought. The

Holy Spirit has been sent to guide us on our journey to help us in our daily

lives, have you ever been surprised when you intuitively knew how to handle

a tough situation with your family? That’s wisdom. Have you felt awe-

perhaps the first time you held your child in your arms? That’s fear of the

Lord. The Holy Spirit is with us always.

We are in need of help in the 4th Grade Wednesday afternoon class; your help is much appreciated.

Please contact Jennifer Ferrantino at 283-0508 or [email protected]

By Juan J. Sharing the Gospel God wants you to have faith and trust him completely. Jesus said, "If your faith is as small as a mustard seed, you can tell a tree to grow in the ocean, and it will." A mustard seed is smaller than a freckle. You trust your school bus will go to your school. You have faith that clowns will make you laugh. You just need a little bit of faith and God will be there for you. Prayer Lord, I believe you will help me. Something to Draw Draw a picture of a clown making people laugh. Mission for the Week I will remind others that God will help them.
