  • Pastor’s Letter December 25, 2020

    Dear Parish Family,

I received my first Christmas card this year in the middle of August. It was from a friend and he wrote in his card: “I don’t care if this is way too early. I am already totally done with 2020; I am ready to move on!” While I don’t think sending a Christmas card in summer can really fast forward the time, I could certainly appreciate his thinking. It has been one difficult year. We are all ready for something new.

At midnight Mass, each Christmas eve, we read an astonishing message of hope from the book of the prophet Isaiah. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those who dwelt in a land of gloom, a light has shone.” Of course there always seems to be some darkness in our world that needs the light but this year has been a year of global suffering. A year of fear, of sickness, and an endless series of challenges. Isaiah knew what it is like to live in a dark time and promises that all our suffering and pain, however dark, will be overcome by the light. He writes:

For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames. For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. He is called Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.

Yes the child who is born to us will bring us peace. And the spirit of our God, living in us and with us, is already enlivening the faith and hope of this community. This year I have seen this in so many ways as we have found the resilience to keep our church open and active. I have seen it in our online Mass team who week after week made it possible for people to connect with this community and to our prayer. I have seen it in our office secretaries and receptionists who came in every day to make calls and to see how we can help. I have seen it in our catechists and religious education team who made sure that our young people stayed connected to their church and to their faith. I have seen this light shining in all of you who found different and creative ways to support this community. You kept our doors open, our church safe. You adopted families in need and helped us to reach out a hand of support to those worried about their survival. The light shines in the darkness and we are the ones who become that light for others.

All of us are participating in church and our celebration of Christmas in so many different ways this year. Some of you are here in person. Others are joining us online. The most important thing is that you feel welcome, valued, and invited to be part of our Christmas mission to spread the light.

I wish you a blessed and joyful Christmas. And may 2021 truly be a new year of hope, of light, and of healing for all.

    A Light Shines in Darkness

    Sincerely yours in Christ!

StarofBethlehemGifts The moment of tragedy in the Christmas story happens when Mary and Joseph are told that there is no room for them in the inn. From the beginning of his ministry, their child, Jesus our savior, preach that we should feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, and welcome every stranger. The Sacred Hearts Adopt-A-Family program reaches out a helping hand to members of our community who are at risk. Especially now, in this time of pandemic, we offer assistance to people who are in danger of losing their homes, face overwhelming expenses because of unemployment, cannot temporarily provide essentials for their family, or have an unmanageable inancial loss. Joy to the World!

Catechists are among those essential workers who pass on the faith. There are many people who are part of our religious education program at Sacred Hearts: program monitors, mentors, special project coordinators, administrative assistants, substitute teachers, and many others. The heart and soul of our program are our catechists, who have stepped up to the plate (and to Zoom) and are passing on the faith to our children.

Our parish is most grateful to our catechists:

For more than 2,000 years, the Christmas story has been told and

passed on from generation to generation. Parents, families, and church communities have let their

children know about God’s love and God’s presence in our lives and in

    our world.

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father; God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God; begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again, in fulfillment of the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

  • Readings for Christmas Eve 2:30, 4:00, 5:30, and 7 PM

First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5 For Zion’s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch. Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory; you shall be called by a new name, pronounced by the mouth of the Lord. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the Lord, a royal diadem held by your God. No more shall people call you “Forsaken,” or your land “Desolate,” but you shall be called “My Delight,” and your land “Espoused.” For the Lord delights in you and makes your land his spouse. As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you: and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you.

Second Reading: Acts of the Apostles 13:16-17, 22-25

When Paul reached Antioch in Pisidia and entered the synagogue, he stood up, motioned with his hand, and said, “Fellow Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt. With uplifted arm he led them out of it. Then he removed Saul and raised up David as king; of him he testified, ‘I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will carry out my every wish.’ From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus. John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.’”

    Gospel: Matthew 1:1-25

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

  • Readings for Midnight Mass

    First Reading: Isaiah 9:1-6

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames. For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David’s throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!

    Second Reading: Titus 2:11-14

Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.

Gospel: Luke 2:1-14 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

  • Readings for Christmas Morning Masses First Reading: Isaiah 52:7-10

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, and saying to Zion, “Your God is King!” Hark! Your sentinels raise a cry, together they shout for joy, for they see directly, before their eyes, the LORD restoring Zion. Break out together in song, O ruins of Jerusalem! For the LORD comforts his people, he redeems Jerusalem. The LORD has bared his holy arm in the sight of all the nations; all the ends of the earth will behold the salvation of our God.. Second Reading: Hebrews 1:1-6 Brothers and sisters: In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he has spoken to us through the Son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say: You are my son; this day I have begotten you? Or again: I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me? And again, when he leads the firstborn into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God worship him.

    Gospel: John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth. John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’” From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

  • Readings for The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph First Reading: Genesis 15:1-6; 21:1-3

The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will make your reward very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being childless and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?” Abram continued, “See, you have given me no offspring, and so one of my servants will be my heir.” Then the word of the LORD came to him: “No, that one shall not be your heir; your own issue shall be your heir.” The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would; he did for her as he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated. Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him. Second Reading: Hebrews 11:8, 11-12, 17-19 Brothers and sisters: By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age --and Sarah herself was sterile-- for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore. By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac descendants shall bear your name.” He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol.

Gospel: Luke 2:22-40 When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted —and you yourself a sword will pierce— so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

  • Supporting the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts We hope that you enjoyed your Christmas visit to Sacred Hearts. We are a small year round community and the maintenance of this beautiful church and its many ministries are made possible by the year round support and special holiday generosity of each of you. We are grateful for your generosity today. If you would like to learn about other opportunities to support us please consider the following:

Become a Registered Member or Friend of the Basilica. You are welcome to make Sacred Hearts your home parish and if you already belong to another community we would be happy to include you in our membership as a Friend of the Basilica. Visit: www.shjmbasilica.org/register

Give Automatically—Month by Month The most difficult challenge, in terms of support, is the seasonal nature of our community. Our mass attendance sinks low in the winter and our weekly support also reaches a year long low. One thing you can do to help is to sign up for automated monthly giving. There are three ways to do this:

Donating to a Specific Purpose Some parishioners prefer to donate to a specific purpose. This is easy to accomplish. Reflection On the Gospel

    December 27, 2020

Sunday is the Feast of the Holy Family. Perhaps it will help us here and now to remember that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph didn’t have it so easy in their day and age. From Jesus’s birth in a stable to his family’s escape into Egypt to save his life from a ruthless king, there were difficulties and dangers. What sustained them through it all is what can sustain us, too: trust in a loving God. But another factor can make this feast a bit challenging, and that is the many people who don’t have a biological family alive and well and in good relationship. There we must remember that Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were part of a larger community, and we must be that community for each other. We, too, are meant to be a Holy Family across borders, classes, abilities, and all other distinctions, a Holy Family that prays together to our one common God and Divine Parent. May it be so.

Thank you Jim Frankenbach Thanks to Jim and his crew at Southampton Christmas Lights for decorating our Christmas trees in front of the Church. Jim donates his time and talent every Christmas to make our Basilica beautiful.
