    Foreword

“Macedonia in Figures” represents a small statistical yearbook, containing tables and charts with data about the Republic of Macedonia from all the areas covered by the surveys that are conducted by the State Statistical Office.

The publication offers an abundance of data on the social and economic life of the country, presented in small tables and interesting charts that are understandable and well-arranged so as to facilitate the observation of a phenomenon.

The concept of presenting comparative data about the Republic of Macedonia and the EU member states and candidate countries has been retained in this edition as well. Each member state is presented with some basic data arranged in tables.

We hope that this edition of “Macedonia in Figures”, just like the previous ones, will meet your demands for useful and interesting data about the Republic of Macedonia and its place in the European family.

The territorial distribution of the population in the Republic of Macedonia shows significant disproportion. 57.8% of the population live in the cities (there are 34 cities in the Republic of Macedonia), the highest concentration being in the capital, Skopje (20.5%).

A large part of the rural settlements (the total number of settlements is 1 728) are completely depopulated (141 settlements) or have extremely small number of inhabitants, and in the near future, as a result of the unfavorable age structure (old population), will have no population.

On the other hand, in a relatively small number of rural settlements (mostly located in the western and north-eastern parts of the country), the concentration of the population is very large.

Included in the calculation of the Index of Industrial Production are the sections Mining and quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply from the National Classification of Activities. From the graph, it can be seen that in 2013 the industrial production increased in comparison with the previous year, mostly because of the increase in production in the section Manufacturing.

The largest contributor to the total value of completed construction works on structures in public ownership, built by business entities, is transport infrastructure (36.6% in 2003, 27.6% in 2008 and 26.3% in 2013), followed by reconstruction, recovery, adaptation, capital repairs and current maintenance works on constructions (13.4% in 2003, 40.9% in 2008 and 18.4% in 2013), non-residential buildings (7.0% in 2003, 12.1% in 2008 and 18.6% in 2013).

In 2003, 2008 and 2013, dwellings with 3 rooms were built the most, their share in the total number of completed dwellings by years ranging between 23.6% in 2003, 28.5% in 2008 and 35.6% in 2013, followed by 2-room dwellings with 34.8% in 2003, 34.3% in 2008 and 27.9% in 2013.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013, most building permits were issued for buildings (77.3% in 2011, 73.5% in 2012 and 77.2% in 2013) and for reconstructions (14.6% in 2011, 15.1% in 2012 and 14.2% in 2013); consequently, the expected value of the buildings has the highest share (86.7% in 2011, 75.4% in 2012 to 72.1% in 2013), followed by civil engineering (7.5% in 2011, 21.3% in 2012 and 24.2% in 2013).
