Two sisters, Hannah and Katie walked home from the bus stop on a hot Georgia day. They had high hopes that their mom had made them a homemade snack

after their long day at school.

As the girls entered the house they called to their mom who was baking inthe kitchen.

When the girls met their mom in the kitchen, she was finishing baking cookies and brownies. She told Hannah and Katie that they were for the neighbor who had broken his leg. The

girls left the kitchen feelingquite disappointed.

Katie and Hannah then headed upstairs to their bedrooms, but halfway up the stairs a familiar song began to sound. Both girls turned around rather quickly as they realized it was the music of the ice cream truck they were hearing.

After checking with their mom, the girls ran to get their piggy banks. Both girls were excited

since they had missedthe cookies. Hannah and Katie headed out the front door to meet the ice cream man.

They found the ice cream man in front of their house serving other children. After waiting in line, Hannah bought a popsicle that cost one dollar. Katie decided she would buy an ice cream sandwich for 75 cents. Katie had many coins so she began to count out 75 pennies.

The ice cream man began to get angry with Katie as she was taking too long to count out the pennies. He told her to hand him the silver coins, he didn’t want

anything the color brown. He said he didn’t like things that were brown. Meanwhile Hannah was becoming embarrassed, but Katie was determined to pay with

her brown coins.

The line behind Katie grew longer and longer as she kept counting her brown pennies. The face of the ice cream man became red with anger.

He told Katie again that he did not like the brown coins. Finally, Hannah stepped forward

and paid with a dollar bill.

Katie was so angry that the ice cream man would not take her brown coins that as she went to sleep that night she came up with a plan to get back at him.

After school the next day Katie dressed herself in all brown and gathered her supplies for her plan. Katie set up her own ice cream stand in the street! Her

prices were cheaper and she would accept brown coins. She would be ready when the ice cream man came around the block!

When the ice cream truck rounded the corner Katie began yelling to all the neighbors letting them know that the ice cream man doesn’t like the color brown and that she had cheaper ice cream. Soon her line

was longer than the truck’s.

Each day after school, Katie would sell ice cream from her own stand, all the time wearing the color brown.

On the fourth day, when the ice cream truck came, the man got out of the truck and came to Katie’s stand.

He told her that he would take brown coins if she would stop selling in the street. Katie asked him to apologize for being mean and made him promise to

like the color brown.

Katie was so excited that she had convinced the ice cream man to take her brown coins that she paid him in pennies for a whole week after that day!
