We’re lucky to live in a beautiful part of the world with rainforests and the reef at our doorstep.
That’s why Council is committed to reducing waste entering landfill and endeavor to achieve this through improvement of waste management services and community participation.
As of 1 August 2021, Council will manage all Cassowary Coast landfills, transfer stations and weighbridges as well as the receipt and transportation of wet waste to an external waste facility. This decision allows a more effective delivery of services that align with community needs and Council’s waste reduction goals.
To ensure we are leaving nothing to waste in our backyard, we must work together and sort our waste into WET, DRY and RECYCLING.
If everyone in the region sorts it out, it will reduce financial cost and protect the rainforest and reef.
Residents can recycle more than 20 items at a Waste Transfer Station. To find out more, visit Councils website and search Recycling at Waste Transfer Stations.
We can all play a part in reducing waste by avoiding it in the first place. Practice waste avoidance by being aware of what you are purchasing and disposing. Create a habit to ask yourself… ‘Can this be reused, recycled or composted?’
Flick through this handy guide for tips on waste avoidance, recycling, and dealing with waste.

cOlLectioN SerViceWet waste (blue or red lid bins) are collected wEEkLY. Dry waste (green lid bins) are collected fORtnIGHTly.
Cleanaway’s (Council’s waste collection contractor) vehicles all have split-bodied compartments to keep the wet and dry waste separate.Although bin contents are emptied into the same chute, a mechanical divider operated by the driver, directs the contents of each bin into either the wet or dry compartment!
For easy servicing, bins should be placed half a metre from the kerbside, and one metre apart - with the handle and wheels facing your house or property.Enquiries regarding bins (including damaged bins through fair wear-and-tear) and service arrangements can be made by calling Council on 1300 763 903.
