Certified professional Chef Kathy Gold is offering two summer camps that are sure to appeal to budding Iron Chefs: “Cooking Boot Camp: Core Curriculum” June 28 thru July 2 (ages 7 to 11), July 12 thru 16 and August 2 thru 6 (ages 12 and older); and “Cooking Around the World” from August 9 thru 13 (ages 12 and older). enjoying Independence Day with friends and family.

• PNC Bank’s RAMONA CHAINEY is looking forward to “barbecuing, spending some quality time with family, and watching lots of fireworks!”

• A long-time resident, DR FRANK NASO finds that Independence Day offers a great opportunity to “get together at our house with our kids and our five granddaughters.”

• The Public Library’s CHERYL BRADY and CYNTHIA GUERRA can’t wait for July Fourth weekend. Cheryl is looking

forward to “taking a day off from the

Library and going to the parade.” Cynthia

reported, “I love seeing all of the

kids that I’ve gotten to know from the

library’s Storytime riding bikes in the

parade.”

• GABE (2) and ALEXIS (5) GUERRIERI moved to Haddonfield just two months ago, but they already feel quite at home at the Library. Alexis answered for her entire family, “We’re going to Ventnor

Beach to watch the fireworks on the boardwalk.”

• Children’s Librarian DOROTHY PEPPARD revealed, “I’m going to make a red, white, and blue

dessert and eat it ... while reading a book, of course!”

School Report to the Community

The past year has been extremely exciting for the students, faculty, educational leadership team, the Haddonfi eld School District, and the Board of Education. We hope that you experienced the excitement also.

HMHS On Top ... Again The year began with Haddonfi eld Memorial High School being ranked the number 2 high school in the region. This ranking was not an accident. Over the last few years the faculty, staff, educational leaders, Board of Education, parents, and community have all worked together to offer the very best educational opportunities for Haddonfi eld students. This school year was no different, and the results speak for themselves, especially in these tight budgetary times. Of course, the School District has a constant need to improve, and that is why the Board of Education sets yearly goals for the District.

Critical Thinking is Critical The goal for 2009-10 focused on critical thinking and ensuring that every student, in every classroom, on every day was challenged to think critically. Why focus on critical thinking? The reason is simple. Both the research and the realities of these economic

times are very clear: Our students must be prepared to meet the ever-increasing challenges and possibilities that the world community offers and expects. To this end, all professional development offered in the district this past year focused on developing critical-thinking students. Experts from across the country were brought to Haddonfi eld to continue the preparation of the talented Haddonfi eld faculty and educational leaders. These experts included Dr. Enoch Hale (Foundation for Critical Thinking), Scott Wright (Habits of Mind), Mike Kuczala and Dr. John Staryk (The College of New Jersey), and Stephen Weimer (Drexel University Mathematics Forum). Working with the Haddonfi eld faculty, educational leaders and students, these experts help the adults and therefore the students learn how to delve into the essence of critical thinking – the use of analytic skills, questioning techniques, problem solving skills, and inquiry techniques, to name a few areas. Throughout the year the faculty has refi ned and developed lessons to help all students use age-appropriate critical-thinking skills to assess and delve deeply into real-life problems.

Extending the District Goal Much has been accomplished in the area of teaching everyone to think critically, but much remains. Thus, at its meeting on June 3, the Board of Education approved the administration’s recommendation that the District Goal – “Creating critical-thinking students excited about their learning in every building, in every class, on every day” – be continued for another school year. The Local Professional Development Team, educational leaders, faculty and staff are excited about this decision and have moved forward to prepare for next school year. The opening day for faculty and administration next school year is Wednesday, September 1. The Local Professional Development Team and educational leaders, led by Dr. Dyanne Kerecman (Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning), have developed an exciting day focused on the teaching of critical thinking. Dr. Enoch Hale, Stephen Weimer, Scott Wright, and Mike Kuczala will work with faculty and administration on developing the skills necessary to develop students who think critically. All faculty and educational leaders will work with these experts and their colleagues to further refi ne

their ability to foster a classroom culture where students actively, refl ectively, and fair-mindedly learn how to question, refl ect, and intellectually challenge their own and others’ understandings of the world with perseverance and an open mind.

Action at Every Level The work the district has undertaken on critical thinking is crucial. At the elementary level, faculty must teach students that effort and perseverance are essential for success. Middle school faculty must show students that with greater academic challenges come more opportunities. Middle school and high school students must be taught that when they think critically about issues and experience challenging learning situations, others will push back on their thinking. Middle school and high school students need to be taught to persevere and fi nd new ways to tackle challenges as they will grow intellectually. High school students must be taught to believe in themselves and their capabilities as they apply what they have learned and become self-directed learners. The Haddonfi eld faculty and administrative leaders have a challenging job ahead. Fortunately,

Haddonfi eld educators are extremely capable and dedicated both to their own personal learning and to the students of Haddonfi eld. They have met the challenge, and will continue to meet it.

Looking Back Much has been accomplished this year – from the required, to enriching district work and partnerships. Examples include: • Successful completion and passing of the state-required monitoring process (QSAC); • Completing all 10 curriculum audits in four years; • A Camden County College partnership where High School students can earn dual college credit when they take one of the 21 courses approved for college credit at HMHS; • The Drexel University-Haddonfi eld School District Partnership – over 20 students participating to date; • Recognition as a leader of professional development in the Camden County. There have also been many exceptional academic, art, and athletic accomplishments this year. Examples include: • One of the highest pass rates on the end-of-year Biology and Algebra 1 exams in the State; • Odyssey of the Mind State Champions; • Science Olympiad Champions;

• Model UN Champions; • Spanish and German language award winners; • National Art Society; • National Merit Scholars and Finalists; • Choir, Orchestra, and Band regional and state winners; • DECA regional and state winners; • Multiple Conference and State sport champions, including the ShopRite Cup (sixth year in a row). Congratulations to all students, faculty, and administration on these extraordinary accomplishments.

Looking Forward Finally, with my departure, I wish everyone the very best and thank you for your dedication to and support of the Haddonfi eld School District over the years. The Haddonfi eld community and the Haddonfi eld School District are incredible. The community and district are positioned well to face the future. I thank you for the opportunity to serve as a principal and senior administrator. Individually and collectively you have been gracious in letting me be part of your lives. Thank you for the chance to learn and grow along with the Haddonfi eld Schools.

COMMUNITY ALERT!A Clear and Present Danger

A recently published report titled “Potential Haddonfield Public Library Sites” presented the findings of ablue-ribbon committee led by Commissioner Borden. The committee evaluated 14 sites, dismissed 12, andconcluded that only two are “worthy of serious consideration”: the “Existing Public Library property,either alone or in conjunction with 56 Haddon Avenue” and the “Allen Ave Parking Lot – Borough ownedparking lot behind Kings Highway East and Tanner Street.”

Despite the finding that the Allen Avenue location is “worthy of serious consideration,” the Commissioners appear to be on the verge of deciding to proceed with plans for an addition at the current Public Library site.

In publicity for a “public forum regarding the future expansion of the library” at the Borough Hall on June9, the Borough stated: “Commissioners will consider the presentation, as well as comments from thepublic and anticipate making a decision shortly thereafter.” [Municipal Matters, May 28, 2010 – ouremphasis.] This apparent intention to make a decision in the near future about how to proceed wasrestated by the Borough Administrator at the beginning of the meeting.

The June 9 panel’s presentation focused almost entirely on the existing library building. The panelmentioned other sites only in passing.

So, based on the Borough’s own statements and actions – in advance of the forum and during the forumitself – it appears that the Commissioners are poised to choose one of the following options: • Option 1: Renovation to make the existing building ADA-compliant – $1,100,497 • Option 2: As above, plus alterations to improve functionality – $1,862,991 • Option 3: Renovation as above, plus an addition of 8,360 sqft – $5,308,849 • Option 4: Renovation as above, plus an addition of 13,800 sqft – $7,820,172.

But there is a legitimate potential alternative that deserves serious consideration: • Option 5: The Allen Avenue Parking Lot.

Even though this location has numerous “pros” and few “cons,” even though the architect found that,“with proper site improvements and building planning, the site is compatible with public library use,” eventhough the Sites Committee found it was “worthy of serious consideration,” and even though it was firstsuggested 18 months ago (in December 2008), the Commissioners have yet to consider the Allen Avenue site seriously.

There is a Clear and Present Danger that, in the near future, the Commissioners will propose at leastthe renovation of the existing building and possibly the construction of an addition in the park in frontof it. Such a plan would not only be extremely unwise, it would be extremely unpopular, and thereforeunwinnable at referendum.

We urge all concerned residents to implore the Commissioners (a) to order an independent, detailed investigation and evaluation of the Allen Avenue site and (b) to commission the preparation of conceptual plans, with estimated costs, for at least two building configurations on that site.

Building an addition in front of the Public Library building would be a huge mistake, for many reasons.

The Commissioners and the community need not make such a mistake, because an alternative site for a new library is available.
