Parents, residents and teacherscame out to the Sept. 11 Haddon-field Board of Education meetingto have a voice in regard to theteachers contracts, asking for adecision to be made soon.

Betty Anne Young, a mother oftwo children in the school system, started the talks.

Im here to talk about theteachers. The individuals who

spend six hours a day with thetwo most important people in mylife, my kids, Young said.

Young credited her childrensacademic achievements and ad-vancements to the teachers.

Her daughter, having been clas-sified as having sensory issuesand lack of speech and languagedevelopment at the age of 3, wasdeclassified before she started

kindergarten. Her son was classi-fied in the autism spectrum, hav-ing Aspergers.

His world opened up becauseof his teachers. They taught himlife skills, social skills, all thosethings that many of us take forgranted, Young said. Theyhelped Timmy see the world to beless scary to a boy who just didntunderstand or know how to navi-gate it.

Young also commended the Di-amond Team, who helped her son

during a time he couldnt attendschool because of his anxiety. Shealso acknowledged his counselorwho helped him during a difficulttime of loss with their family.

To the world, you may be one,but to one you are the world,Young quoted to all the teachers.

After her story, Young finishedwith a plea to the board, asking tosettle the contract with the teach-

ers quickly and give them whatthey deserve.

Vote yes to avoid collapseof water, sewer infrastructure

In a recent issue of The HaddonfieldSun, our friend Walter Weidenbacher of-fers an incomplete, disjointed and, ulti-mately, failed argument opposing the saleof the boroughs water and sewer system toNew Jersey American Water.

It is my opinion that Mr. Weidenbacherhas reached this point not through a seri-ous and sustained examination of the is-sues surrounding the system, but rather

because of a distrust of the current bor-ough administration, both commissionersand unelected staff.

His argument, if we can call it that, is lit-tle more than a string of platitudes, bro-mides and clichs, with no mention of the

serious debt that already encumbers thesystem and will likely strangle it in thecoming decades. Some water mains datefrom 1889. Sixty percent of the water mains

must be replaced over the next 30 years.Where does Mr. Weidenbacher expect themoney to come from? Does he have amoney tree? An orchard?

    please see LETTER, page 13

No one would ever accuse Gov.

    Christie of being reserved, of

not speaking his mind, or of

    not taking chances.

    No one.

Last week, he solidified that once

again when he decided to lift New Jer-

seys ban on sports betting. His deci-

sion which came as a surprise to

many around the state and nation is

in direct opposition to what he said a

month ago when he told us all to forget

    about sports gambling.

    With the governors decision, and

    directive to law enforcement, casinos

and horse race tracks can start offer-

ing bets on professional and collegiatesports as soon as a judge affirms

that what Christie is doing is legal, or

    at least isnt illegal.

A federal law prohibits sports bet-

ting in all but four states. When New

Jersey challenged that law, it went all

the way up the legal ladder, but the

Supreme Court decided not to hear the

case. So, alas, no overturn of the feder-

    al law.

But a federal appeals court just

below the Supreme Court said nothing

was preventing New Jersey from re-pealing its own ban and not regulating

the industry much like the states of

    Washington and Colorado do with

    marijuana.

So last week, thats what Christie

did. He repealed the state ban on

sports betting and said New Jersey

    wont regulate, license or authorize

sports betting officially. Acting stateAttorney General John Hoffman said,

in fact, that the state will be telling

casinos and tracks that they wont be

    held liable for sports wagering.

Its not the avenue that Christie, or

any one else at the state level, wanted

to take, but it seems as though its the

road they feel they were forced down

because they want sports wagering so

    badly.

And can you blame them for this?

Three Atlantic City casinos shut down

in the last month, and one more, the

Trump Taj Mahal, just announced it

would be closing in November. Those

four closings will eventually result in

the loss of more than 10,000 jobs and

be a hit on a big tax money-maker for

    the state.

Bets cant be placed yet a federal

court is expected to affirm Christies

position in a few weeks and when

they are, you wont be able to bet on

any professional sports event held in

New Jersey (no Jets, Giants or Devils

home games) or on any New Jersey

college team no matter where they

play (no Ray Rice alma mater). Every-

thing else, though, will be offered onthe big board.

While the NFL and other profession-

al sports leagues might fight this

move, its unlikely they will prevail

    forever. Even NBA commissioner

Adam Silver said its inevitable and

that his league will ultimately partic-

    ipate in that.

Will this be the shot in the arm New

    Jerseys gambling landscape needs?

Can it finally, once and for all, turn

into Las Vegas East? Its hard to tell.

    in our opinion

Its time to take thepointsChristie takes chanceon New Jerseysports betting as the underdog

    SEPT. 1723, 2014 THE HADDONFIELD SUN 7

    Countywide flu shot program

    kicks off on Oct. 1

    The change of sea-

    sons leaves many peo-

    ple feeling under the

weather. But you canavoid getting sick by

    getting a flu shot. The

    Camden County De-

    partment of Health

    and Human Services

    recommends that

everyone get vaccinated this flu season,

    especially children and seniors who

    are most vulnerable.

    The Freeholder Board has sched-

uled 18 site locations for the 2014 Sea-sonal Influenza Immunization

Program. As is the tradition, the pro-

gram begins at the annual Senior

Health Fair, which this year takes place

on Oct. 1, in Cooper River Park at the

Jack Curtiss Stadium, starting at 10:00

    a.m. and continuing through 2:00 p.m.

When you visit the 20th annual fair

for your flu shot, youll also find dozens

    of health information tables, games,

prizes and lunch for all senior citizens.

The launch of the flu shot program iscoordinated with the fair because men

and women age 65 and older are among

the high priority groups for annual

shots. As always, we ask that seniors

    receiving Medicare to bring their

    Medicare ID cards with them.

The flu shots are provided for no-

    out-of-pocket cost. Seniors that register

with the Camden County Division of

    Senior and Disabled Services will

enjoy a complimentary lunch at the

fair. Call (856) 374-2782 or log on to

    www.camdencounty.com to RSVP.

In order to keep your family healthy

this flu season, we want to make this

beneficial service easy to access. That

is why we host immunization sites at

    convenient locations

    across Camden County,

    in addition to the an-

    nual Senior HealthFair.

    The flu cannot only

    create challenges at

home, but it can have a

    negative effect on the

    workplace crippling

    businesses and suffocating production.

The flu can spread quickly through

any office and infect several employees

through the simple act of coughing. If

you are a business owner, you shouldalso encourage your employees to get

vaccinated. It literally pays to get a

    flu shot.

    Pregnant women and chronically ill

people are other high priority groups.

Flu shots are also recommended for

people with weakened immune or car-

    diovascular systems, or with chronic

    metabolic diseases, renal dysfunction

    or blood disorders. Youngsters aged

nine and older must be accompanied

by an adult. Children under nine needtwo shots, a month apart, and should

be seen by a pediatrician. For unin-

sured children, call CamCare at (856)

541-9811 or the Camden County Health

Center in Bellmawr at (856) 931-2700.

    tions, visit www.camdencoutny.com.

partment of Health and Human Serv-

    ices at (800) 999-9045.

up how Haddonfield MemorialHigh School was recently rankedthe second public high school inthe state by New Jersey Monthlyand how its salaries are less thansome of the surrounding dis-tricts.

All of the top 10 districts havestarted the school year with con-tracts for their teachers, with theexception of Haddonfield,Errichetto said.

Errichetto made sure to men-tion that he did not have any chil-dren in the school district, butthat he is a Haddonfield taxpayer. He supported the teachers, sayingwithout them, classes are com-promised. He finished by urgingthe board to resolve the contract.

Board President Glenn Mora-marco said the board is unhappyit couldnt reach an agreement.

They want to, too, but not reach-ing a settlement isnt outside thenorm.

In fact, two-thirds of the dis-

tricts in New Jersey that had con-tracts that expired in June of lastyear are starting the school yearwithout new contracts and arecontinuing to work under the oldone, Moramarco said. So thatputs us in the majority, and weare not happy with that situation. We are happy to continue to meetwith the HEA negotiating com-mittee as frequently as they want. This is something we take veryseriously and want to reach an

agreement as well.Matthew Maguire, a residentand father as well as teacher, saidhe loves being a teacher, but thereality is he has to work side jobsas well. He is a bartender on Fri-days, a tutor and a constructionworker during the summer.

You keep saying its not out ofthe ordinary to be out of a con-tract, but we keep saying, well,

were not ordinary. Were secondin the state. We keep hearingfrom parents, the board, fromeveryone how great we are. But it

is hard surviving like this. Thereis no reason we cant settle. We

Mr. Weidenbacher also statesthat history shows us that pru-dent political leadership can ac-complish the goal of maintaining

into compliance with the Ameri-can with Disabilities Act withrestrooms, elevators and staircas-

es because it is in dire need ofsome updating, Mayor JeffKasko said.

Residents commended theboard for getting the project start-

ed and completed to this point.Citizens voiced that its been along, overdue project and it isgreatly appreciated.

However, questions on financ-ing were brought up, with someasking where the money camefrom and what the money is beingused for.

According to Kasko, the moneyfor the down payment was fromvery generous donations specifi-cally for the library, one includinga half million dollars that a gen-tleman left in his will. The librarywill have close to a million dollarsfor this year, the library boardsaid.

The $1.83 million is a numberbuilt on the estimated cost of theimprovement, with contingencybuilt in.

The bonds issued to the librarywill help with the addition of anelevator and handicap bath-

rooms, ADA improvements, anew roof, heating and air-condi-tioning system improvementsand various other interior im-provements, along with improve-

    ments the library board request-ed.

The money we are using fromthe trust is for work that the li-brary board requested to be donein addition to the work the com-missioners are doing, SharonMcCullough, Haddonfield admin-istrator, said.

The concern of the front win-dows being replaced was broughtup, since they were not includedin the improvement cost and arenot being replaced at this time. However, a citizen suggested thewindows be re-caulked, since ithas been seven years since theywere last caulked.

After all concerns over the li-brary were discussed, the boardadopted the ordinance, setting theplan for improvements to the li-brary into motion.

In other news: Haddonfield recognized Sept.

The board recognized andcongratulated The Haddon Fort-nightly for its 120th anniversarythis year and thanked it for allthat it has done.

September was proclaimedNational Recovery Month. Theboard called upon the people ofHaddonfield to observe the monthwith appropriate programs, activ-ities and ceremonies.
