Canterbury CathedralApril - June 2017

Canterbury Cathedral is the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Communion and seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Cathedral is both a holy place and part of a World Heritage Site. It remains one of the most visited places in the country, and, just as importantly, a working, living church and community.

As well as worship, Canterbury Cathedral offers an exciting programme of arts and culture activities, events and exhibitions.

It is widely regarded as a centre of excellence for traditional crafts, education and learning.

For the next season we are proud to present an exhibition from one of our stained glass artists, our annual Open Gardens, and the last opportunity to hear music recitals on our current organ before it is rebuilt.

This is all against a backdrop of transformation at the Cathedral as it embarks on The Canterbury Journey, a four year programme of conservation and development.

The Cathedral plays an active role in the community and the building, or parts of it, are at times closed for general visiting due to services or special events. Therefore, always check opening times before visiting.

The Cathedral and Precincts are huge and even when major parts of the Cathedral are closed for visiting, there will still be plenty to explore.

Thy Kingdom ComeA beacon event of prayer, praise and witness on the evening before Pentecost, led by songwriter and worship leader, Pete James.

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement, inviting Christians around the world to pray between Ascension Day and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ. What started out as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in 2016 to the Church of England, has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.

Spring Concert.Canterbury Choral Society brings together two of Bach’s best loved choral works, Magnificat and Cantata No. 11, for its spring concert. The society is joined by the London Handel Orchestra who play Bach’s famous Suite in D, with its Air On a G String as one of the central movements.Summer Concert.The society are joined by Canterbury Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Two of the the most emotionally-charged English 20th century compositions come together to bathe the Cathedral in glorious sounds.

Church Music Conference: Keynote Speech‘The Speech of Angels’ or ‘The Brandy of the Damned’? Music as Moral Landscape in Nineteenth-Century British Culture, by Professor Rachel Cowgill. Part of a wider conference at Canterbury Christ Church University, this keynote speech is open to the public.

Family & CommunityThere’s so much for the family and visitors with children to see and do at the Cathedral, from our Explorer Backpacks where children can discover the unexpected, to taking part in a range of fun activities during our Open Gardens Weekend.

Explorer BackpacksOur Explorer Backpacks provide a fun and interactive trail to help children aged 3-12 investigate many of the beautiful and extraordinary places and objects within the Cathedral.

29 May-2 June. Explorer Backpacks can be collected from the Schools Department. Backpacks are free to use, but normal Precincts charges apply. Children must be accompanied at all times.

Open Gardens WeekendAs part of the National Garden Scheme, the Cathedral is opening its private gardens to raise money for charity. Open Gardens celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and is a must for anyone who loves and appreciates the skill and art of gardening.

Visitors will have the opportunity to wander around the Precincts and enjoy the fragrances, colours and natural beauty of the gardens, plus take away a plant, providing a potted memory of Canterbury.

This year is marked by the opening of The Friends Garden to celebrate their 90th Anniversary.

27 May 11.00-17.00, 28 May 14.00-17.00. Normal Precincts charges apply (not on Sunday after 14.00) plus a £5 charge each day to enter the gardens.

National Volunteers’ WeekCome and meet our volunteers and hear about some of the exciting new projects they have been working on, from research in the Archives and Library and collections care to delivering creative projects and activities with the local community.

Black Prince ConferenceThis two-day conference will explore the story of the Black Prince, whose tomb is in the Cathedral’s Trinity Chapel. It is part of a wider project to preserve and research the architecture and historic objects of the Black Prince.

The conference examines and discusses the Black Prince, his life and his influences on the past and present and aims to contextualise him within the Cathedral setting. A keynote address will be complemented by a series of presentations, panel discussions and unique and unusual access to Canterbury Cathedral.

Young Futures Conference: The Black PrinceA FREE one day conference aimed at 16-19 year olds. This event explores the Black Prince, his reimagined identity and how that has been depicted within contemporary culture.

ExhibitionsMany of the Cathedral’s craft people are practising artists in their own right - Grace Ayson from the Cathedral’s Stained Glass Studios is holding an exhibition of her work.

Drawn to Light: The Hidden Cathedral‘Drawn to Light’ brings together an inspiring series of work by Stained Glass Artist, Grace Ayson. These atmospheric drawings and contemporary paintings on glass explore the Cathedral’s hidden spaces. Inspired by her familiarity with the seldom seen aspects of this world-famous building, Grace explores the Cathedral and its Precincts. The exhibition is a dual show spanning the Cathedral Crypt Treasury and The Drawing Room at The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge. Grace Ayson is a Stained Glass Conservator and Glass Painter at the Cathedral Stained Glass Studios. After training in Fine Art and Sculpture BA (hons) from the Kent Institute of Art and Design (UCA) in 1994-7, she forged a career in the Arts and Historic Building Conservation. Grace also won the Ashton Hill Award from the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Glass Painters. This enabled her to undertake an internship in Stained Glass at The Cathedral Studios in 2006 and she has been here ever since. Grace has worked on many projects with The Cathedral Studios conserving and restoring the stained glass windows across the Cathedral as well as producing new windows on commissions. She also exhibits her drawings and work in group and solo shows across the country.

Object of the MonthEvery month, we display a carefully selected object from the historic collections in the Cathedral’s Crypt Treasury. See a rare item close up, and learn how it is often part of a much bigger (and often surprising) story and how it relates to the Cathedral and our heritage.

Madonnas and MiraclesThis is an opportunity to see one of the Cathedral’s star items now on loan to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, as part of their Madonnas and Miracles exhibition. The mid-17th century pilgrim ribbon was purchased in Rome by John Bargrave on his world travels. It forms part of Bargrave’s Cabinet of Curiosities held within the Cathedral’s historic collections.

Every day between 10.00-16.00 (12.30-14.30 on Sundays), the Cathedral is manned with volunteers eager to share their passion and knowledge of the building, its history and its people. They are there to help you make the best of your visit, so do not hesitate to ask them lots of questions. Chaplains are also on duty throughout the day.
