The Freedom Riders. The freedom riders were a group of young adults who were going to stop at nothing till segregation was ended. These young civil rights activists had had enough of segregation, and they had decided to do something about it. The freedom riders started their bus ride on May 4th, 1961 from Washington, D.C to their first stop in New Orleans on M. They were going to test the Supreme Courts decision, Boynton v. Virginia that had outlawed segregation in the restaurants and waiting rooms in terminals serving buses that crossed state lines. Riding this bus wasn’t as easy as you might think though, so many people in the south were still racist as ever, and it didn’t matter what your color was if you were on that bus, the mobs would come after you too. Yes, I did say mobs. Southerners were so outraged that went after the freedom riders. They even set one of their busses on fire. With them still inside! But they didn’t give up, they rode until people realized that racism is wrong and that’s why I’m writing about them today for their courageous acts of bravery. Their acts have strongly influenced me to be a better person and stand up against racism today. We say thank you freedom riders.
