Make Way for Generation Z/Generation Me/ The PluralsNo definitive name has yet been given to the generation born after what has been termed the Millennial Generation. The Millennials are people born between 1982 and 2001 and the last of them will be graduating from our high schools in the next few years. They were born of Baby Boomer parents and were the most numerous, affluent, and ethnically diverse generation in United States history. They produced the largest college enrollments and comprised a major buying group. Terms used to describe them included optimistic, team players, civic-minded, and family-oriented. Their parents instilled self-esteem and they say that they are ready to overcome challenges and be successful. But what about the latest generation of school children – those born after 2001? They are the students in our elementary and middle schools and even in the early years of high school. What describes them and what can we expect from them? While a name has yet to be attached to them, there are already characteristics that seem to fit them as a group. According to research by the marketing firm Frank N. Magid Associates, they are the most diverse of any generation in the United States and “are more likely than older generations to have social circles that include people from differ-ent ethnic groups, races, and religions.” According to Magid, “Plurals (as he dubs them) are the least likely to believe that there is such a thing as the American Dream.”Scott Hess, vice president of insight at Teenage Research Unlimited (TRU), has another name for them. He calls them Post Gen for two reasons. They are the generation who “post” everything. If it happens, it goes onto social media. They are also the generation that “is arriving on the scene immediately following a number of culturally seismic events. Post recession. Post Obama election. Post tsunami. Post 9/11. Post Millennial.” He says that “it will be defined more by what came before than what comes after.” At this point, no one is certain if any of the above will directly impact our students or the way that they are taught. We already know that they are more tech savvy than any group before them. But, in some ways, because of that, they are loners, operating in a world where they communicate without physically seeing the people they are interacting with. It will be up to the educators working with these young people to use their unique history to create effective lesson plans as they prepare them to lead the world.

JEAN GALLAGHER Benton Mortgage/Entertainment Mortgage Entrepreneur, World Traveler, Gourmet Cook, Survivor, Inspirator A mortgage professional who has worked in the trenches for 25 years, Jean has been originating resi-dential loans in California since 1990. She opened her company headquarters in Beverly Hills in 1991, and offices in Palm Desert and San Francisco in 2009. “Our trademark is: full loan approval before a home buyer

even begins their search (resulting in very quick closes and the absence of frayed nerves). About 50% of my business is specifically for those in the entertainment industry, but we treat all our clients as stars.” Her company uses cutting edge loan products and is skilled in structuring income pre-retirement, in the analysis of self-employment income, and in counseling homebuyers relocating from out-of-state. “I provide corpo-rate benefit programs for companies and builder benefit programs for real estate developments.” Jean’s career began as an account executive (stock broker), specializing in managing the securities investments in retirement portfolios for mid-sized companies. In addition, she wrote a financial column in the Sunday edition of the Los Angeles Chronicle under the name “Ms. Money”. KFWB radio, sponsored by the Wall Street Journal, ran her stock market updates five times daily, and she frequently appeared as a guest on CBS Evening News.In her next career, as President of Pacific International Development, she built small apartment complexes in the U.S. and other parts of the world. A New York native who lived in Los Angeles for the past 45 years, Jean studied forestry and math at Syracuse University, Finance and Economics at UCLA. She moved to the desert in 2010 where she is a member of the DVBA (Desert Valleys Builders Association) and the PDACC. Jean recently completed her mentoring as a new PDACC Ambassador: “The quality of the (Ambassador) membership is very impressive. I’m proud to be counted among them.” Jean’s family includes 3 daughters and a son, 2 grandsons and a 2-year old granddaughter. Her avocations include computers, gourmet cooking and traveling the worldJean is most proud of her ability to survive, and she would like to be remembered for how she’s inspired those going through a hard time to “get up and keep going”. When asked where she sees herself in 5 years, she announces: “Working from my laptop somewhere in the world”.

Welcome to the Ambassadors, Jean! We’re glad you’re working with us right here!

Customer Service Tips Does good customer service make a difference? When you experience good customer service do you feel good? Of course it makes you feel like you have made a good choice and you are willing to use the business again. When we receive bad service from a company representative, chances are we become frustrated and we typically make a mental note not to use the company services or purchase from the business again. Not many people are willing to want to deal with someone who is rude or unengaged in helping us with our needs. Poor customer service unequivocally will turn people off and undoubtedly can make a potential customer walk away. Customers and/or members are the “bread and butter” to a business’ livelihood and it is vital they are our top priority. Of course, not every customer can be pleased but we should strive to provide the best experience possible. Three simple tips that can go a long way Respond within 24 hours. Even if your answer requires time to craft or if you are relying on an outside source, responding within 24 hours to an email or voicemail is important. Simply letting someone know you’ll get back . to him/her is good business etiquette.

Be positive. Sometimes this is easier said than done when someone is yelling at you. Whether it is over the phone, through an email or in person your tone of voice, choice of words and facial expressions can say a “thousand words”. You want all of these “words” to be positive to let your customer know that you are going to do your best resolve the issue at hand.

Count to 3 in your head. When we are “backed up against a wall” our initial instinct is to lash back. Stop! Take a second to count 1, 2, 3 in your head to allow yourself an opportunity to breathe and react in a positive man-ner rather than lashing back.

Customer service is the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. The perception of success of such interactions is dependent on how we treat our customers. Don’t forget – customer service plays a key in an orga-nization’s ability to generate income and revenue.

The Palm Desert Area Chamber lends its support to Small Business Saturday® and drives commerce to Palm Desert and our surrounding valley cityies small businesses.

Palm Desert Area Chamber is proud to announce its participation in this year’s Small Business Satur-day, taking place on November 28th. Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to strengthening the community by supporting local small businesses.

Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday serves as the ceremonial kickoff to the holiday shopping season for small businesses across the United States. In 2014, nearly 3,000 Neighbor-hood Champions rallied local businesses and created events and activities to drive shopping at small businesses around the country. The day was also championed by elected officials in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., including President Obama.
