As I am sure you all noticed January of 2018 began with

some brutally cold weather On TV and in Facebook videos

meteorologists introduced us to a new term to explain a

rare winter storm that swept up the East Coast

bombogenesis My Microsoft Word spell-checker doesnrsquot

even recognize that one So what is going on Why was that

storm so intense particularly for northern New England

And why was it followed by intensely cold weather If the

worldrsquos climate is supposedly warming why was I freezing

here in Georgia

To explain what happened Jeff Berardelli A TV

meteorologist in West Palm Beach Florida posted a 4-

minute video which inspired this article which can be

viewed here He noted that the storm actually looked like a

hurricane with bands of swirling winds and a developed

center As he explains in his video both the Polar Jet Stream and the more northerly Arctic Jet Stream (both of which are

ldquorivers of airrdquo moving generally west to east across North America) dipped very far south with the arctic jet reaching all

the way down to Florida

Meanwhile global warming has been having an impact on sea surface temperatures (SSTs) both the Gulf of Mexico and

the Atlantic Ocean had SSTs of 3 to 6 degrees F warmer than usual Combined with the very cold polar air the warm water

in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Stream Current in the Atlantic Ocean produced a bomb -- a rapidly intensifying storm

heading northeast up the US coast centered around a low barometric pressure center that dropped rapidly (Barometric

pressure helps determine weather conditions -- high pressure generally produces sunny days while low pressure fuels

storms) Bombogenesis refers to the development of a bomb storm for this to happen atmospheric pressure at the storm

center has to drop 24 mb (millibars) within 24 hours this early January monster storm dropped 60 mb in 24 hours

But wait How could it have gotten so bitterly cold here in Chattahoochee Hills if the Earth is actually warming right now

A glance at a world temperature map would help to answer that As of early January Earth was about 12 degrees F

warmer than average the only intensely cold spots were in the Eastern US and far northeastern Canada with 90 of the

planet experiencing warmer than usual temperatures The reason for cold air escaping so far south has to do with the

Polar Vortex a belt of high energy winds blowing counterclockwise in the far north A warming climate causes that belt to

weaken in intensity allowing polar air to escape southward and visit us For those of us used to thinking of our only

Winter Weather in Chatt Hills

What Makes Farming in the Cold of Winter Worth It By Karen Costa Hattaway

The clock reads 1 pm it is finally above freezing and farmers Chris and Kristy Smith are getting ready to feed their 100+

animals It is the first day of mild weather after two weeks of unusually intense cold here in Chattahoochee Hills

ldquoJordan come comerdquo says Kristy calling one of her

female goats Jordan swiftly runs outside of the barn

gate and hops on the milking stanchion Kristy begins

milking her and once she is all done she rewards her

with a treat and calls the next goat Kristy repeats the

same routine until all of her female goats have been

milked By the time she is done milking and feeding

them together with the rest of the animals three hours

have gone by

ldquoItrsquos a 24-hour commitmentrdquo Kristy said ldquoYoursquore never

off the clockrdquo

Chris and Kristy spend about three hours a day working on their farm and thatrsquos on a good day When the temperature drops below freezing they only know when theyrsquore starting rarely when theyrsquoll finish Between buckets of frozen water and exploding eggs the work on a farm never ends ldquoWhen it rains goats think lava is falling from the sky so they hide all day inside the barnrdquo said Kristy ldquomaking it quite literally a messrdquo

After hearing about the challenges that come with being a farmer I asked Chris and Kristy what makes them want to do it

ldquoFarming is hard and often thanklessrdquo said Chris ldquoBut we do it to conserve the breeds for future generations Without

people like us they would become extinctrdquo he added with a big smile on his face This philosophy inspired the name of

their homestead Worth It Farms

Worth It Farms was founded in 2007 in Priceville AL where Kristy grew up raising rare heritage breeds such as Ancona

Ducks and riding horses across creeks and through fields to meet friends Her husband Chris however came from a

completely different background He was raised on the suburban streets of East Cobb playing soccer and hanging out at

the Sparkles Roller Skating Rink Nevertheless he loved animals and his soon-to-be wife and decided to join Kristy in her

farming journey Compelled by the farm-friendly environment the zoning laws the sense of community (while still

maintaining privacy) and the closeness to downtown Atlanta Chris and Kristy decided to relocate their farm to

Chattahoochee Hills in August of 2016

Heritage Breeds and Marvelous Cheese

Worth It Farms currently raises seven rare heritage breeds including Guernsey goats Ancona ducks and Cotton Patch

geese For the time being goat milk and duckchicken eggs are the main products Chris and Kristy sell however they

delight themselves in trying new goat cheese and sauerkraut recipes for testing on their friends

Involved in various livestock conservation movements including Slow Foods USA the Livestock Breeds Conservancy and

the Southern Foodways Alliance this exceptional couple is also pursuing the Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) label for

meat and dairy products which ensures that farm animals are raised to the highest animal welfare and environmental

standards

Chris and Kristyrsquos vision is to open a creamery offering high quality nutrient dense food to the local community and

promote eco-tourism through farm tours and educational workshops

While the freezing weather had us all playing in the snow or sipping hot chocolate by the fire life at Worth It Farms

continued steady and strong No matter the challenges Chris and Kristy continue their meaningful work loving what they

do and doing what they love and thatrsquos what makes it all worth it

Building Igloos Community Brickworks in the Wintertime By Clifford Blizard

ldquoPeople Respond Really Wellrdquo

ldquoWhen we arrived at the house it was 47 degrees inside When we left the temperature was 61 degrees and risingrdquo This

is how Judy Henderson described what she and other volunteers from Community Brickworks managed to accomplish

here in Chattahoochee Hills during this latest cold spell to make living conditions safer and more comfortable for a

wheelchair-bound resident of our community It was the magic of everyday simple acts ndash of putting rugs down on bare

floors and using plastic to insulate windows in the kitchen and bathroom And it captures beautifully what Community

Brickworks is all about being there to care for others in need providing vital resources when other options simply arenrsquot

available

Community Brickworks started as a community library in 2006 and a food pantry a year later was established by ldquotwo

preachers and a teacherrdquo as Judy (the teacher) describes it It was established as an organization on a ldquoone roof modelrdquo

to meet a myriad of community needs here in Chattahoochee Hills and beyond The name of the organization emerged

from the concept of taking the bricks we are given and building a strong foundation from them ldquoOne roofrdquo refers to the

idea that resources pour into Community Brickworks from many places including non-profit organizations like United

Way nearly all of the churches in Chattahoochee Hills and direct donations by community members


Community Brickworks then distributes those resources to those in need acting quickly in situations like chilly winter

weather to insure so that no one is left out in the cold Nowadays the organization includes about a dozen dedicated

volunteers as well as many other community members who step in to help out when needed

Before Community Brickworks local residents in need would have had to call around to churches to ask for support

Unfortunately most local churches do not maintain a regular staff to answer telephones Even then a request for

assistance would have had to be vetted by church administrators Nowadays Community Brickworks can be reached

throughout the week and can step in right away to cover propane bills pay electric bills loan out electric heaters and

provide warm winter clothing Judy explained that Facebook networking has been a key to Community Brickworksrsquo

success the organization (typically Judy herself) is able to put out the word about an urgent need and ldquopeople respond

really wellrdquo

What You Can Do to Help

What can we do to support Community Brickworks in all the good that it is doing here in our town Judy offered me

several suggestions The first was to donate firewood A lot of folks rely upon wood to meet their winter heating needs

Another is to donate cold weather supplies like winter coats hats and gloves along with blankets and rugs Food

donations can replenish the food pantry Finally Community Brickworks always welcomes financial support either by way

of direct donations or via donations to most area churches

Love Songs of Spring By Valerie Hayes

Valentinersquos Day will soon be here and that can mean only one thing frogs

will be emerging from their winter lethargy to gather in ponds swamps and

even roadside ditches to sing about amplexus which is the froggy term for

how tadpoles are made

These amphibians can actually be easier to identify by ear than by eye and

different ones announce their presence at different times of year A diverse

and healthy population of frogs can be a sign that an ecosystem is in decent

shape Unfortunately these important and endearing amphibians have been

declining worldwide some to the point of extinction

Here in Chatt Hills we have the great good fortune to be able to step outside

on an early spring evening and be greeted by a most beautiful sound from an

improbable-seeming sourcemdashthe ethereal trilling of the American Toad

(Anaxyrus americanus) the loud peeps of the diminutive Spring Peeper

(Pseudacris crucifer) or the fingernails-plucking-a-comb of the Upland

Chorus Frog (Pseudacris feriarum) Then there are the underwater snoring

sounds of the Pickerel Frog (Lithobates palustris) and the Southern Leopard

Frogrsquos (Lithobates sphenocephala) complex call which sounds like a

combination of clucking and rubbing inflated balloons together

Other species will begin calling later in the year but these are the five you

are likely to hear in February and March

ldquoI Am Not a Politician Irsquom a Servant of my

Communityrdquo

The famous words Carl often reiterated were not a mere diplomatic

strategy they truly represented who Carl was and still is in all of our

hearts He was everything but a politician However despite his lack

of political acumen and driven by his love for this community he

decided to serve it even in the most inconvenient of situations

ldquoCarl would take calls while on vacation and try to help his

constituents long distancerdquo his wife Judy said ldquoHe was so very proud

to be a part of the first City Council for Chattahoochee Hillsrdquo

On January 13 the world lost the world lost a great man Not only was

he a wonderful husband father and grandfather he was also a great

servant to his country and this community

A man who knew no stranger a Marine Corps veteran and a first

councilman of Chattahoochee Hills Carltonrsquos name will never be

forgotten and his light will shine forever

How Vanessa Walter (Hattaway) remembers her Papa

My Papa was like a second father to me We grew up in his house he was a feisty man with more wit and spirit than any one person should have He was more adventurous than anyone else I know He told wild stories and listened to funky music His fun reading wasnrsquot fictions and murder mysteries it was an encyclopedia He appreciated good wines and would bring bottles to mom and dads and sit under the veranda drinking with mom until they were both giggly like school girls Papa was a prankster some of my fondest childhood memories involve a prank or twosetting fire crackers late at night while the cousins and I play hide and seek in the woods and what not Even into his old age he was cracking jokes at the dinner table when wersquod come to visit Although his Parkinsonrsquos and Dementia made life challenging over the last couple of years he remained wildly spirited to the end Papa was and is SO loved and will never be forgotten knowing him his ghost will still try pulling pranks on us Although my heart is breaking and many tears will continue to be shed Irsquom comforted knowing he is out of pain and that he lived an enriched life With a community that honors him and the Hattaway name a country that is thankful for his service and a family who will never let go of his legacy Rest In Peace Papa

My name is Carlton Hattaway and Irsquom running for District 2 councilman I have lived in the area that is now Chattahoochee Hill Country for most of my life (58 years) After graduating from Campbell High School I enlisted in the Navy and then in the 2nd Marine Air Wing USMC When my service was completed I moved to Florida where I joined Xerox Corporation I began my career with Xerox as a technician and worked my way to Field Engineer and Instructor I met my wife Judy while working in Tampa In 1973 my wife 4 children and I returned to my roots and built a home on Cochran Mill Rd where we have lived ever since Two of our children still live in the area along with 3 of our twelve grandchildren After 33 years I retired from Xerox Corporation Over the years wherever Irsquove lived I have tried to be an asset to my community by being involved with organizations such as Big Brothers of America Jaycees Cedar Grove Community Center and Gideons International I am very active in my church membership where I serve as a deacon Sunday school teacher chairman of trustees choir member and on various committees It is now my hope to be able to further serve my community as Councilman in our newly formed city I have the time and energy to dedicate myself to this position if given the opportunity

Chattahoochee Hills Charter School Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony By Clifford Blizard

On Friday January 26 Chattahoochee Hills Charter School

(CHCS) had a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the

beginning of Phase II of its construction plan Specifically

work is now underway on the Judge Willie J Lovett Jr

Building The building has been named in honor of the late

Judge Lovett Chair and Vice-Chair of the CHCS Board from

2010-2015 A much-beloved advocate for children and

youth Judge Lovett was represented at the ceremony by his

wife Seletha Butler and many family members and

friends Leslie James CHCS Foundation Board chair

described him as one of our guiding lights [who] actually

had a vision for educational excellence

Today that vision came one step closer to full realization The new building will include a cafeteria auditorium eight

classrooms and two science labs for middle school scholars One exciting component of the new building will be an array

of solar panels As Joshua Pessu of Hannah Solar explained the panels should be able to offset 100 of the schools

entire energy needs Via classroom computers students will be able to access data about solar energy production too

In closing the ceremony Stacy Gottleib Executive Director of the CHCS Foundation noted that current funding is only

sufficient to construct the building itself Additional funding will be necessary to equip the classrooms and laboratory

spaces The Lovett Building Fund has been established in order to furnish the interior of the building and provide the

necessary technology including all materials for the labs and classrooms

City Manager Report

FINANCE REPORT

At 58 through the Fiscal year the City has collected $1879793 of revenue That is approximately 45 of the projected

revenue Most of the shortfall is from property taxes due to the delayed billing from the County However the City began

the year with $1192049 in budged fund balance and added an additional fund balance of 654327 from the annual audit

$574000 of fund balance was allocated to capital equipment purchases with the remaining balance placed in a reserve for

contingency line item This makes the total budgeted revenue to date 3756169 (90) This does not include Hotel Motel

Funds of 97522 (76) or TSPLOST of $291463 (105287 is fund balance form last fiscal year) Total revenue for all funds is

$4145154

At 58 through the fiscal year the City has expended $1513700 (526) in the General Fund The City has expended a

total of 2234341 (46) for all funds which include Capital at $2385885 Debt Service at $149420 HotelMotel at $39677

and TSPLOST at $292660

FIRE DEPT UPDATE

Transport capable medical response unit ndash MED51

The new medical response unit has been delivered and is being readied for service Radio installation and several other

improvements will take place during the next few weeks for the unit to begin operating before February

Identity Fraud X5 Financial transaction card theft Terroristic Threats Death Investigation Runaway juvenile DFACS assist (removed child from home) Theft of services Criminal trespass Robbery (1 arrest 2 other suspects with warrants) Recovered stolen vehicle

PUBLIC WORKS UPDATE

Over the last year with the acquisition of new equipment the City has been able to repair over 21 miles of graveldirt

roads This includes scraping ditching graveling and crowning Currently staff recently completed the entire length of

Hamilton Road and is now on Henry Mill Road Upon the completion of Henry Mill Road staff will move on to Kite Road

followed by Jones Ferry Please understand the reparation of these roadways is not a one-day job It takes several days

and even weeks to address one lane mile of roadway especially when there is inclement weather that creates delays with

not only the ability to make the repairs but also obtain and apply the materials needed This city is also seeking a Public

Works Technician and a Heavy Equipment Operator The job descriptions for these positions are available on the Cityrsquos

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

The City is accepting resumes for a Permit technician The job description requirements for this position are available on

PARKS COMMISSION UPDATE

The next Parks Commission Meeting is Wednesday January 31st at 530 pm This is a makeup day for the meeting that was

cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions

PLANNING COMMISSION UPDATE

The Planning Commission meets the third Thursday of each month pending agenda items The meeting starts at 630 pm

and is located at City Hall 6505 Rico Road The next Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for Thursday February 15
