William Eggleston is a pioneering American photographer

the 1960s to the present day and is the most comprehensive
display of his portrait photography ever.
Eggleston is celebrated for his experimental use of colour and

1976 is considered a pivotal moment in the recognition of
colour photography as a contemporary art form. Highlights of
the exhibition will include monumental prints of two
legendary photographs first seen forty years ago: the artist’s
uncle Adyn Schuyler Senior with his assistant Jasper Staples
in Cassidy Bayou, Mississippi, and Devoe Money in Jackson,
Mississippi.
Also on display will be a selection of never-before seen
vintage black and white prints from the 1960s. Featuring

Publication
Beautifully illustrated exhibition catalogue by curator Rosalind
P. Blakesley. £24.95, paperback.
Generously supported by the Blavatnik Family Foundation
Supported by the Russia & the Arts Exhibition Supporters Group
Russia and the Arts is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a
selection of masterpieces on loan from the State Tretyakov
Gallery in Moscow.
The exhibition focuses on the great writers, artists, composers
and patrons, including Dostoevsky, Mussorgsky and Chekhov,
whose achievements helped develop an extraordinary and rich
cultural scene in Russia between 1867 and 1914.
The exhibition also illustrates how Russian art of the period was
developing a new self-confidence, with the penetrating Realism
of the 1870s and 1880s later complemented by the brighter
hues of Russian Impressionism and the bold, faceted forms of
Symbolist painting.
Displays
The Gallery’s changing programme of free displays highlight a
range of themes, sitters and artists, as well as significant
anniversaries and acquisitions.
Black Chronicles: Photographic Portraits 1862 – 1948
Floor 1 Rooms 23, 31 and 33, until 11 December 2016
Black Chronicles brings together over thirty photographs
which present a unique snapshot of black lives and
experiences. Developed in collaboration with Autograph ABP,
this intervention includes some of the earliest photographs
from the Gallery’s Collection alongside rediscovered
photographs from the Hulton Archive. These portraits
highlight an important and complex black presence in Britain
before 1948, a watershed moment when the Empire
Windrush brought the first large group of West Indians to the
UK.
Leon Golub Powerplay: The Political Portraits
Floor 1 Room 32, until 25 September 2016
This display of works by American artist Leon Golub (1922 –
2004) focuses on his political portraits from the 1970s.
Featuring heads of state, corporate, military and religious
leaders, it explores the evolution of the ‘gaze’ in the artist’s
pictorial language, in particular the way facial expression
conveys an impression of power and the psychology
of the sitter.
Lucian Freud Unseen
Floor 0 Room 40, 11 June – 6 September 2016
A rare unfinished self-portrait painting and a small selection
of fascinating sketchbooks, childhood drawings and letters by
the late Lucian Freud are brought together for the first time
in a display to celebrate this important acquisition of his
archive for the nation through the Arts Council England’s
Acceptance in Lieu scheme.
An illustrated publication Lucian Freud’s Sketchbooks, with
an introduction by Sarah Howgate and an essay by Martin
Gayford, complements the display. £18.95.
